    I've been watching mixing UA-cam tutorials for years, and these short videos are an incredible breath of fresh air: To the point and very easy to understand. Thank you so much!

    For the longest time, I never FULLY understood compression. There's so much to them and when someone explains them to me, I get lost. Joey gives me the visual I need. Thank you, Joseph

    Been loving the vids you’ve been putting out this year, JST in general. Easy to grasp, and I appreciate that you’re using Reaper too.

    Greets Joey, many thanks for all that you do for us. I make it a point to drop by your NAMM booth every year to say hello. I'm a nobody, but you always are extremely nice to me and make me feel like somebody. Cheers.

    the way you guys edited the video where you were showing the uncompressed and then compressed wav forms from your daw would actually be an amazing feature of a compression plugin, like a side by side (top down) oscilloscope of the dry then wet (compressed) effect of the compression plugin. I always thought compressor plugins always missed the mark when it came to visualizing compression but the best way would be to how you edited that video. Great video btw :)

      Yes, but also no. Your eyes lie to you very often when mixing, so it would more than likely just produce more skewed results than relying on your ears.

    My question is: "Are there any differences in digital in the box compressors? Will one compressor plug in with all the options give you everything you need, or are there advantages to having multiple options and plugins?"

    • @AdamShepard
      @AdamShepard 2 роки тому

      (not joey but I use both) I find ITB comps work best in a mix, but there's no replacement for using compression as an insert in your preamp. Controlling level is super effective before it hits the converter stage! (just make sure you know what you're doing or else you'll ruin it haha... we all have)

    • @audiospectra
      @audiospectra 2 роки тому

      You need to have multiple compressors for various purposes. This is why even in your DAW they give different stock compressors so that you can solve as many problems as you can. Sometimes a compressor can be used for its character and attitude rather than controlling dynamic range. Other times compressors can be used to control depth, punch, transients, glue sounds, etc. you can't do all that with only one compressor even if it has all the parameters (attack, release, knee, etc.). Not all compressors are built the same.
      Hope that answers your question, feel free to reach out if you're still confused. All the best 😎

    So the question of when to use a compressor vs using a limiter?

    • @Noisa
      @Noisa 2 роки тому

      Obviously it’s just my opinion (random dude on the internet) but a limiter is like a brick wall. Infinite ratio:1. I personally tend not to use limiters on individual tracks, and is pretty easy to overdo on individual channels, but there are some cases it works well on em. I stick to busses if I use one, and more so on the master buss.

    • @AdamShepard
      @AdamShepard 2 роки тому

      the easiest answer to this is: try both! see what you prefer! Limiters don't usually have a lot of options so they're not great for toneshaping. Compressors have more control over the excitement of a source

    • @audiospectra
      @audiospectra 2 роки тому

      Use a limiter if you want to catch fast (loud and annoying) transients, this is something that you can do with a 1176 though and get much better results and control. If you want to keep the transients and punch intact then avoid limiters during mixing. But if the compressor can't control the transients the way you want then a limiter could be the best option.

  • @A.RAWSHAN
    @A.RAWSHAN 8 місяців тому

    If i set Slow attack on kick since the transient is allowed, there will be no compression at all. Is this right or wrong!

    So we can apply compression on distorted guitars?

    • @AAllinsonNN
      @AAllinsonNN 2 роки тому

      Distortion is a form of compression, so they’re technically compressed and may not have any or much need for secondary compression. You can still compress them if desired though.
