What does it mean to be a Toyota Corolla AE86? a cheap affordable car that is fun, unassuming, and reliable enough to last 30+ years. The Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ is more comparable in price, ethos, and market niche to a modern Nissan S14 240SX Silvia. So, no, the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ probably don’t fit into every category, but that’s to be expected, the 1980’s RWD Corollas are very different from 2022’s FWD Corollas. The AE86 was much cheaper than the Nissan S14 and S13. The new GR86/BRZ are much cheaper than the Nissan 370Z, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and new 400Z, and adjusted for inflation the Honda S2000 and BMW Z3 too. Matching the Mazda Miata MX5 (the price of which can climb to over $40,000). But the $30,000 GR86/BRZ is not $25,000 “fast Corolla” cheap. The closest thing to a fast affordable Corolla from the 1990’s to 2020 was the Corolla XRS and Honda Civic Si: both cars known for great engines, affordable speed, and Reliability. The 2000’s Toyota Celica, Acura Integra, Scion tC, and Acura RSX also share the AE86 form factor of a affordable two door liftback hatch.
I honestly think best sub 40k drivers car is selling it short. I cant think of anything $50k that drives as well as it does. Im not a Porsche guy but i’d probably only have a hard choice if offered a Cayman

correction, the AE86 sprinter/corolla is not an economy car, its a sports compact. The economy car one with the same chassis is the AE85 or the USDM SR5 since both have the 3AU and 4AC single cam. The AE86 are actually used in Group A and Group N, Rallying and Touring Car races, it even beat Holden Comodores, V8 Rovers, Volvos, Mercedes, BMWs and Fords in those races. The AE86 has alot of racing history before Initial D and drifting and people never knew about it

FYI Hachiroku it self means Eight Six, saying Hachi Juu Roku(八十六, means Eighty Six) is too complicated Some people strats to called Hachi Roku(八六, means Eight Six)
I had a stock AE-86. Best car I ever had. Flicked through corners like a breeze. May have only had 112 HP, but at 133 MPH I had more to go. I backed off because the front end was lifting. 19 years of driving joy, to 260,000 miles, with 1 repair. The rest was brakes and shocks. I did have the Limited Slip. It's replacement is a 2005 Scion tC. Nice, but not the same. I also have an '88 Supra non-turbo, and an '85 Celica GT-S. But the AE-86 was my pet. It was stolen, dropped when they took the wheels off, and developed a crack that started at the firewall, and worked back through the car over time. I could have bought a new floor pan. I miss that car so much.
Umm....just because something dynos at 110bhp doesn't mean 165 crank is an overstatement. You should probably learn a bit about relative dyno comparisons and also Japanese fuel standards.
That blacktop was rated at 165hp. I put one in my MKI MR2 many years ago. The answer to your title though is No. The soob is a nice car but its no AE86 - I road raced one for 25 years
Nice Review! Does the GR86 feel more tail happy than the BRZ. Ive heard the BRZ is more stable for daily drive. Whats your take on that. Thank you! @Zygrene
Great video, but that AE86 is a 1986: not a 1985. The color, the rear lights and the smaller door decals dictates that......unless it's been updated. By the way, this has to be the best comparisons I've seen of these two cars

correction, the AE86 sprinter/corolla is not an economy car, its a sports compact. The AE86 has alot of racing history before Initial D and drifting and people never knew about it
The AE86 was a economy car. It was a early hot hatch for Toyota essentially.
the new 86 has become the biggest ricer car, I see so much of them with purly consmetic mod and loudest exaust, ruins the 86 name in my opinion
The only problem I have with the gr86 is the fact that it’s not a inline 4
I just want a 1991 NSX with some honda badges🥺🥺
its a good car but I don't think it should be called the successor to the ae86
It's not a GR86 it's a revisioned Subaru BRZ
i keep hearing people say fake engine sound and not fake engine sound on this car which is it seems like every other video says something different about it
If the new 86 was pure Toyota then it will deserve the name and it will be legendary
curious, why does it actually make 240-250 but toyota/subaru downplay it to jsut 228?
Not sure, but BMW is known to do this to an even greater extent with their turbo engines. Maybe under-promise, over-deliver?
The subtitles for the engines sound was "music"
Excellent presenting style in this video! Really enjoyed it
Love this comparison
The 86, is legendary. I can only describe it in one way. ハチロクかっけーww
Matt would be a fool to sell such a clean AE86
FYI Hachiroku it self means Eight Six, saying Hachi Juu Roku(八十六, means Eighty Six) is too complicated
Some people strats to called Hachi Roku(八六, means Eight Six)
Keep it forever. Because that is the car you wanna drive off into the sunset
Can you put the sound of the old 86 thru the speakers tho?
I miss that car so much.
bro his ae86 actually sounds like the ae86 in initial d
The million dollar question : which would you rather drive on a perfect windy road?
If Matt's AE86 had proper suspension, a close ratio gearbox, and lower grip tires, probably that
Imagine put Fujiwara Tofu Shop decal on GR86
You mean what people already have been doing? It’s kind of corny 😂
Ae86 allllll day!!!! new one sucks to me.
Umm....just because something dynos at 110bhp doesn't mean 165 crank is an overstatement. You should probably learn a bit about relative dyno comparisons and also Japanese fuel standards.
It even got that notorious whistle those suberu 2.5L engines would make at higher revs lol.
That blacktop was rated at 165hp. I put one in my MKI MR2 many years ago. The answer to your title though is No. The soob is a nice car but its no AE86 - I road raced one for 25 years
bro i sold my coupe and i regretted it.. keep it
Nice Review! Does the GR86 feel more tail happy than the BRZ. Ive heard the BRZ is more stable for daily drive. Whats your take on that. Thank you! @Zygrene
Keep it! Or you will Regret it fo the Rest of Your Life!
I Matt decides to sell it just buy it from him
Great video, but that AE86 is a 1986: not a 1985. The color, the rear lights and the smaller door decals dictates that......unless it's been updated. By the way, this has to be the best comparisons I've seen of these two cars
Keep the original ae86! Never sell! I sold my 2005 AP2 S2000 Suzuka blue and I have massive feels for it now 😭.
How about a track review of a 2004 - 2005 Mazdaspeed miata mx5.
Would love to hear feedback from an experienced track driver
tbh it kinda looks like a smoothed out ae86
I’ve had my gts Corolla with a 20v blacktop for about 6 months now and this review is so accurate defworks a car you gotta learn and get used to driving way different from my NA Miata
The GR86 is NOT an AE86. AE86 are Trueno and Levin. Neither GT86 or GR86 are from same lineage of AE86. If you want to play that similarity game, i would say GR Yaris is a true successor to AE86 because it has same engine capacity. 🙄
Bro what? Yaris is a 3cyl AWD hatchback and the gr86 is a 4cyl red coupe, where tf did you get that idea from
@@cjpccelerity29 the GR Corolla is the true successor. It’s literally a performance Corolla with a E210 chassis. Lol
