    KOMODO 6K 17:9 23.976fps R3DCODE HQ
    GEMINI 5K HD 23.976 R3DCODE 5:1
    HELIUM 8K HD 23.976 R3DCODE 8:1
    KOMODO Alpha firmware v1.1.0rc6
    This test is not scientific. my intent was to discover
    the differences and similarities between the RED KOMODO,
    RED GEMINI, & RED HELIUM. Through that process I am sharing
    what I LEARNED by showing you my results.
    all footage is straight out of camera
    (IPP2 Low contrast, Soft Highlight rolloff)
    IPP2 CHROMA NOISE REDUCTION (CNR) enabled on all 3 cameras
    some perceived softness in the following test could be a
    result of slight critical focus variations
    RED KOMODO is based on SKINTONE HIGHLIGHT OLPF - however I decided for a baseline to test KOMODO first with the STANDARD OLPF on both the HELIUM & GEMINI. I then swapped the OLPF on HELIUM & GEMINI to the SKIN TONE HIGHLIGHT for the remainder of the test, so only the Dynamic Range test will have footage from the STANDARD OLPF.
    I have several more parts coming to this comparison test, the next video is the ISO NOISE TEST comparison. Please be sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell so that you wont miss the rest of the videos!
    I plan to share my entire thoughts on this comparison video once all of them have been released. I will also publish a single video edit of all parts together as a single video.

    My takeaways....Gemini has the best details in the shadows and more neutral/realistic color. You can really see a difference if you look at the color rendition and details within the reflections of the water under the bridge and within the tree bark where Gemini is a clear winner. Komodo seems to have the least shadow detail and more crushed blacks but is not far off of Helium. Hard to get any comparison in regards to highlights from this video. An over and underexposure test would be extremely valuable going forward to see how recoverable footage is in each circumstance. In terms of color, Helium has a touch of green tint which has been well known for a while and Komodo seems on the slightly colder side with some blue/magenta which is interesting (most evident if you look at the clip of the bridge piers). Helium (8k) then Komodo (6k) are slightly sharper overall and definitely at 300% crop compared to gemini (5k) due to resolution so not really a comparison between the 3 cameras in that regard. There are times Komodo reminds me of BMP6K in how it renders scenes (punchy) with lots of details such as landscapes and overall I would say Komodo looks the most "digital" and the least filmic but only by a small percentage and this most likely would not be as apparent if it wasn't side-by side to the other cameras. Last thing I noticed is the Komodo seems to have slightly more crop than the other sensors with a narrower angle of view as both the piers and the tree are closer/larger within the frame. Would be great if Tim you could update the description with the lens type/focal length utilized. For the price/form factor and benefits of rolling shutter, Komodo is still an ABSOLUTE WIN and this is proof it hangs very well with its bigger brothers.

    im buying the Red Komodo 6K in about hopefully 6-8 weeks this Video was extremely helpful and self informative I've never shot on RED before but I have watched dozens of tutorials so I know how they work and the Komodo will be my first Cinema camera and of course RED camera as well what I enjoyed the most about this Video is how you put the Komodo up against its bigger and more popular siblings what I was looking for is exactly what this Video gave to me can it compete with its bigger brothers and it clearly can I hardly noticed a difference in quality the only thing I realized which of course I'm sure other people did too is that the quality from the Gemini and Helium are a tad bit warmer then the Komodo's which is slightly cooler which is no big deal for me tbh the Komodo's quality damn near comes close to the Helium 8K im actually impressed as it is way more then the Komodo and Gemini combined. Thanks for this Video now im even more excited to purchase the Komodo

    Great great to see this. produced a lot with the 4k and 6k pocket this year. I want to go back to my Helium but need a second matching camera. I think I found it with the Komodo. As the Image fits perfect with Komodo. A dynamic range test from dark to light would be amazing to see. But anyway I really appreciate the work you put into this Tim! Thanks so much for showing all three together.

    Thanks for the test. Looking good. Gemini looks the most filmic. Then helium, then Komodo - looks a tad digital videoish- but still nice. Surprised by how good the Gemini looked.

      Love the tweaks both Monstero and Gemini got for color science after Helium’s release. Can’t wait for DSMC3.

      I actually wasn't a fan of Gemini color. Looked a bit more yellow/green; reminded me a bit of sony colors. I prefer the Helium and Komodo

    • @iamkubrick
      @iamkubrick 4 роки тому +1

      LittleFjords agree the colour of Komodo looks the most natural. I was just referring to how it handles motion. Looks more smooth then the other two that looks more filmic. Komodo has a more video feel to it then other RED cameras.

    • @KaceyBakerFilms
      @KaceyBakerFilms 4 роки тому +2

      Agreed, Gemini and Alexa mini share some similar velvet smooth qualities. A friend of mine just shot a short on his Gemini and dead set thought it was a studio film or Netflix film. Was just him and a couple of friends. Shame I can’t afford that over the Komodo 🥺😄😄

    love it! only.major difference i saw is the sharpness of the helium compared to the komodo. but on the other hand, there was more noise on the helium om that 300% crop compared to the komodo

    Komodo holds up! Nice skintones and no light refraction is really great! Less detail in the shadows but the highlights are looking surprisingly nice. I'd love to see a test comparing DR of Komodo in rolling shutter vs global shutter mode. Thanks for the great video Tim!

    Very interesting test, though very hard to draw much conclusion from since few of the tests pushed both ends of the cameras' dynamic range and non of them matched white clip. Certainly confirmed what we know about Helium in that it has less highlights and shadows than Gemini, but Komodo remains hard to pin down. The light bulb test seems to show Komodo with less highlights even than Helium, but thats a particularly tough test since we're going what appear to mostly be reflections of the filament which can vary greatly if the camera position is only slightly off. Between this and Phil's xyla vs Helium I'm inclined to conclude Komodo is quite similar in DR to Helium but with the range pushed down a little more, so maybe similar DR but more senstivity, meaning it may need more ND but will do better in low light. Hard to compare with Gemini without another data point, but seems like Komodo has similar sensitivity to Gemini Std with DR similar to Helium.

    • @brianwennersten8456
      @brianwennersten8456 4 роки тому

      Yes. we're also not looking at the R3d's. So couldn't any clipping or sensitivity differences be the result of the in-camera conversion to IPP2 low con or whatever the NLE he used did?

    Am I the only one noticing a brownish / reddish tint in the Gemini images. Not sure if that’s IR pollution or just the nature of the color science on the Gem.

    Loving Komodo color, a bit less DR but looked like less noise than Helium, from what I can see squinting at my lil screen. I definitely prefer helium and komodo color to Gemini, but that's just me

    @2:27 you can see a huge difference in the shadow tones. It'l l match mostly, but it obv doesn't reach into the shadows like the Gemini or Helium does. I actually thought it would be better than the Helium, but nope.

      @TylerMann7148 4 роки тому

      If it were we, I'd over expose everything on the Komodo by at least a stop, similar to shooting SLOG3 on a Sony. Plenty of room in the highlights, but protect the color in the shadows.

    Nice tests. It would be interesting to see low ISO (50) tests output from the same footage to see how much detail is in the sky. Low Contrast just flattens everything out so much it's hard to tell where it's clipping exactly.
