    Nice! They look like they cut together pretty well. Good talent, location and set design always make the cam look better than random test clips. Love the vids, keep ‘em coming man!

    I get such a claustrophobic feeling while watching you in your setup. I really like your content, but it is uncomfortable, as a DP you can understand your camera angle and shot setup, keep an uneasy feel, coupled with your fast talking, and it creates a jaring feeling

    I preferred the Komodo. Also the yellow jacket was more yellow with the Komodo and more greenish with the Helium. 2 fantastic machines though. Thanks for this video, man!

    With IPP2 - I've been able to match DSMC1 and DSMC2 with the Komodo. Some of the colour difference could be attributed to the Komodo using a completely different wavelet compression algorithm. Somewhere on reduser I saw Graeme Natress (RED's colour science guy) talking about it.
    All of the really bad Kommodo footage that I've seen (including my own) is because poor decisions were made with IPP2 settings and the conversion from redlog to rec709... or the use of nonspecific luts.

    Nice video! Just some thought because I’ve noticed this before while filming. I’ve used a Sigma 18-35 and a Sigma 50mm (both photo primes) and they were extremely different when it comes to contrast, and color rendering. I don’t know if the Sigma cine lenses also have a slight shift but definitely something to keep in mind with regardless of any camera tests.

    Loved this. And those Sigmas look GREAT. I just went and gave my Komodo a big hug after seeing this as I was convinced the Komodo footage was infact the Helium.

    Nice comparison. I prefer the straight out of camera look of the Komodo.
    I do have to take umbrage with one of your basic premises -- that your initial footage didn't look great because you weren't using "cinema quality lenses". The initial footage states "Canon 85mm 1.4"
    The only Canon 85mm 1.4 lens is the "Canon EF 85mm F/1.4L IS USM Lens" which is an amazing lens (one of my favorites) and its image quality is easily on par with any the Sigma Cinema Primes.

    Luckily with the flexibility of R3D, one could easily make a quick neutral color profile to drop onto the footage pre-color grading to eliminate the warms of 'Modo and greens of Helium.

    I think what you're seeing on the greenery has more to do with the OLPF, the amount of IR and the method used to compensate for the IR than the actual color science. Just an educated guess. But, I totally agree. The greenery represented on the Komodo is 1000% more natural. What ND's were you using on each?

    • @TheObsessiveDP
      @TheObsessiveDP  3 роки тому +1

      interesting. I didn't log the exact glass but we used some schneider ND's on the helium and some breakthrough Nd's on the komodo.

    • @carlitoshuanes
      @carlitoshuanes 3 роки тому

      @@TheObsessiveDP Apparently the Komodo’s permanent OLPF is closest to the DMSC2 Skin Tone Highlight OLPF or at least that’s what a tech at RED told me. You’re gonna get a completely different amount of IR passing through than a camera using a DSMC2 Standard OLPF or any other OLPF. The ND’s are also allowing varying amounts of IR to pass through and adding their own tint. That’s in addition to whatever variation there is in the tint of lenses used.
      In a studio setting there might not be enough IR to even notice a difference beyond the slight tint of the ND’s and lenses, but the greenery in that shot looks like it’s in the direct, ungripped, SoCal sun. You’re definitely gonna notice a difference in that setting, particularly in the greens. If you go back to your footage and you see a shot where you happened to pick up a black fabric in broad daylight, a flag for example, I’d be willing to bet that your black fabrics look completely different between the two cameras.
      Don’t listen to the haters. Let them go out and do their own comparison if they don’t like yours. I thought it was great. I got a lot out of it.

    Did you try over exposing and under exposinf them side by side? I'm wondering if the sensors can be pushed the same to recover highlights and shadows, or if komodo has a shorter range.

    • @TheObsessiveDP
      @TheObsessiveDP  2 роки тому

      Great question! In my experience, the Komodo sensor has a smidge less dynamic range- part of this is due to the global shutter, it also makes sense when you factor in the price difference of the two bodies.

    The Komodo was easy to pick from the Helium because I know its look - warmer, less green. I agree that the Helium looks significantly better and I'm a bit disappointed. I've got the Komodo on order and I'm hoping with a bit of post work it can look nearly as good. This is a great test to show the difference. Thank you.

    I own a RED Scarlet-W and a Komodo, my personal experience currently is, that they match pretty close Kelvin wise, but their tint is by 2 off. So e.g. RED Scaret-W DSMC2 5700K -4 = KOMODO 5700K -2. Both cameras have a green tint out of the box, and this is currently my own personal workflow and worked great so far. And ofcourse yeah, when puttin on tiffen ND's their is a weired massive green color shift, which kinda annoys me

Same with the top downin the pool vs the mid shot of her holding a phone that says "more punchy"? shes getting blasted by a bounce, so of course it is.

      I understand what you are saying. Most youtubers use the exact same comp and framing for their tests, BUT would you really do that in a real world scenario? Use two different cameras for the same exact shot? Here, we were cutting between the cameras and leap frogging between setups to save on time so I feel its actually more of a real world scenario. What do you think about that?
