I love that you choose to include black history throughout all of your historical learning. As a black American millennial woman, I've always questioned why students in traditional public schools learn so little about historical black figures. So many black Americans believe we've only ever been in bondage because that's all they learn. Imagine what black youth could achieve in life if they learned about all the successful black Americans in history. We have black history month, but even during that the mainstream only talks about the same handful of people every year.

Omg yes! I’m not black but I have always said that! I’m Hispanic and I don’t like Hispanic heritage month. It’s like.... what about including them into the history timeline?! Good point!

Yes! Black history is HISTORY. I taught 3rd grade a few years ago, and all of my students were Black. We didn’t have a social studies curriculum, so I was able to teach it my way. We studied Missouri history, and I made sure every time period we studied included history of Black and Indigenous people. And I tried to leave them with this: if you’re in a history class and you’re not learning about Black people, you should ask “Where are the Black people? What were they doing at this time?” It is my hope that they saw Black perspectives in history as just as important as white perspectives. We all need to internalize that.

Also! Are you familiar with the Core Knowledge curriculum? They offer literature, history, and science resources that focus on building background knowledge. Their history curriculum especially is really amazing, because it’s not just American and European history. Children are exposed to African history, Asian history, Ancient Greek and Roman history...all the things I didn’t get in my public school education (and I had a really great history education!) The resources target elementary-aged kids, which allows them to build knowledge for further in-depth study as they grow. It is my dream to someday reach Core Knowledge in a classroom. I highly recommend checking it out! They even have a FAQ for using their resources in a homeschool setting. www.coreknowledge.org/

A really big factor in me wanting to homeschool my kids was that I grew up being taught Canada was this perfect place and only ever did wonderful things, then as an adult I started learning more about our history and my families history and saw how different it was from anything I had been taught and was honestly disgusted. I love the idea of raising free thinkers, I never want my kids to go through life with blinders on like I am seeing a lot of today.
👏👏👏👏👏 Thank you for this video, it is so appreciated!

♥️ ❤️ ❤️ I love this. I was homeschooled most of my life. Long story short, my parents taught us it’s okay to be wrong, to realize it, and to change. It’s not okay to be close-minded, know what you know, and refuse to learn otherwise. They taught us to be open-minded critical thinkers, to question everything, and to dig. So incredibly thankful for that. Doing the same with my 4 children. To quote my mom, “We never reach the extent of the knowledge we can attain, so dig!”

  • @FloridaGrownAdventure

My mom had a similar mindset when homeschooling me. We grew up Air Force so we traveled a bit. I was already use to seeing different people and culture. But in homeschooling, like you, my mom taught me history as it went and how everything is happening at the same time. And I learned all the different theories of creation. Basically my mom taught me in a way that when I eventually went to public high school, I knew not only what I believed but why. I wasn’t confused at learning new ideas. She taught me a lot and I felt way ahead of my peers when I went to public high school just because I was taught in a different manner.

Such a great video. Totally relate to history being presented in bubbles, it blows my mind how much has happened at the same time, and until I started teaching my kids and pulling my own resources, I had no idea of the context of so many events. Where studying things immersively has been great in certain instances and to dig in, studying timelines and events together has given SO much more depth to our studies, and in turn my kids have really held on to it so much more. Life long learning - yes. So good.

I absolutely loved this video! I think it is soooo important to teach our kids to learn more about different culture, colors, historical figures, & questioning what we think is true, rather than simply saying “I’m color blind” or glazing over things that we don’t necessarily agree with!

When I was very young my mother bought me a view finder. One of the disc sets was of children going to school from around the world. I watched this over and over. China was my favorite. She also got me into a club where I got a doll of the month from around the world. Pretty sure this is why I've grown up so interested in cultures.
Another bonus, I don't understand how people can be so boundary minded. I'm more what's happening worldwide not nationwide.
I love the way you teach your kids.

If you look at secular curriculum options you are much more likely to get diverse stories and perspectives. Torchlight is a great literature based curriculum where diversity is a huge focus. Curiosity chronicles is similar to story of the world for world history but MUCH more diverse and less problematic. Blossom and root just came out with an American history focused heavily on diversity. They are out there!

Also, I cannot believe the things I grew up believing about some historical figures or events as opposed to what REALLY happened (from public school) 😳 It is so important to me that my kids know true history from different ethnic and cultural viewpoints. Great video!

Agreed. We need to share a full picture while being careful not to apply modern thinking to pre-modern times. I'm not a "throw the baby out with the bathwater" person, but I want my kids to look at the harsh realities of what got us to this age of modernity.

I attend a top engineering school, and my professors are constantly challenging us to come up with our own conclusions based on looking at things critically, even if our ideas might conflict with others. I'm so excited that I found this video today! I have been in the middle of attempting to find books like these for my children. We focus so much on slavery and civil rights in history books(which is absolutely important) but their history is far too beautiful and rich to be shoved into one box. My son asked specifically about black history before slavery and it hit me that I had no clue how to answer😢 I was excited to see the book based on the Native American Blackfoot tribe as well! I decended from that tribe so it is one we will definitely pick up❤

@@kimberlysmith673 This is similar to my great grandmother 6 generations ago. She met a her husband, a Calvary officer on the Trail of Tears. She was the daughter of the Cherokee Chief in a tribe close to Boone, North Carolina. They escaped into Virginia before settling in West Virginia. The majority of their lives together was in hiding. Its just fascinating to think about what her life was like, her perspective as a Native American. Really wished I had a way to go back in time to get to know her.

I have never considered homeschool but now our district may be deciding to do remote learning next year because of course we can’t have kids attending school without a covid vaccine. Needless to say, we are strongly considering switching to homeschooling. I have also been viewing some of the propaganda my son has been fed since he has been distance learning, and I am not okay with it. History is one of the main benefits to homeschooling and I love that I am opening my heart to why it may be the best option. So thank you!!

This is defiantly a suggestion for older folks (I read it for my college American history class) but it’s called “an indigenous people’ history of the United States” by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz it’s pretty self explanatory but very well written and absolutely different perspective

Thanks for sharing Angie and I love how you want to normalize inclusion and diversity. I also think it’s important to amplify minority and repressed voices. In light of everything happening I’ve been reading children teen books about activism and wanted to share: Woke a young poet’s call to justice; a good kind of trouble and Ghost Boys are on my current reading docket. I have been binging your vlogs and channel btw because I love your family and you guys make me laugh. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the suggestions. We adopted 5 black children and I have been looking for books about successful blacks in US history. We are striving to teach them that they have no limits.

I really liked hearing your underlying message. Spoke right to me. I could go on and on about what's really happening in the world (actually what's been going on behind the scenes for years now), the media is a big roadblock...but that's a whole different story. Once you open your eyes and are "woke" as they say, you will see and live life in completely different light. We must be free thinkers. Thanks for the video!

So glad that you teach your kids evolution, and would encourage all homeschool parents to do the same because if your child wants a career in biology/science they will need a solid foundation in evolution. It is important for me to point out that theory in science is a hypothesis with such overwhelming evidence that it is accepted as fact, but is not a law as it can't be described mathematically (few biological hypothesis can). Evolution is one of the areas which we are most confident in science (much more than nearly all of medicine) , and is the guiding explanatory framework for biology (in the ways newton's laws are for physics), so even if evolution conflicts with your own theology, please give your children a strong education in it, not just a vauge overview. Also, this video was really great. I loved hearing your perspective on diversity in homeschooling and think it is so wonderful that you educate your children about the more hidden areas of history and the amazing contributions to society by BIPOC and women❤️

Thank you for this comment! So many of the "faith-based" curricula misrepresent the theory of evolution and the scientific evidence for it so badly it hurts my brain and breaks my heart. As much as any imperfect, biased teacher can (because all teachers and people in general are imperfect!), all children should be given access to fact-based information and supported in the journey of thinking critically about the world around them.

I think that no matter what curriculum you use, which resources you pull, there will ALWAYS be holes in any history education. What we should be doing is teaching our kids love searching for answers and never take anything as the Holy Grail and only truth. I feel the same as you about teaching to best of your ability from credible sources and then “setting them loose” per se to discover all they can ❤️ I don’t think sheltering kids from the truth does anything to help our future as a society. We don’t participate in Black History Month it any other “themed month”. We teach those sorts of things all year long. And not just from one race, but from all races/nationalities, and including both genders. One of our favorite things to read are historical letters that have been donated to museums! It’s so interesting to see a first hand account of history!

Have you looked into Curiosity Chronicles for history? I think its fantastic so far and sounds very much like something youd like. We learned about the Indus Valley recently and after reading the chapter, the teachers guide had questions like "what do you think it would be like to live in an equitable society?" To encourage the kids to think, not just learn and regurgitate facts and figures.

Even to supplement our kids in the school system these are fabulous recommendations. My oldest is a highschool senior this year. The book list just arrived and he need to read books I read when I was a senior. Come on! Really? I was so upset! He was upset as he loves to read! The education system def needs to step up the game!

I love your way of thinking that you let your kids learn to think for themselves, and give them option to learn trough diversity. But are you able to teach your children about religions or beliefs with the same objective views?
No disrespect, absolutely not eighter, cos I know you are a smart lady, and love you and your whole family. . But I know you have strong beliefs, so it must be hard to stay objective to a subject you feel so strongly about. So what do you tell them? You also have kids from other cultures and religious backgrounds.. So, do you tell them directly what to believe when it comes to religion ?
Homeschooling seems like so hard work, but it must be so so cool too! 👌♥ Love from Marte in Norway 🇳🇴

I never considered home-schooling before and I doubt I'll ever be able to do it myself, but your videos have really opened my eyes to the pros and benefits of homeschooling and I think this - including diversity and encouraging free and critical thinking - is something I would love to do. I think your kids will benefit so much from this kind of teaching. Love all the recommendations!
I don't know if this is something you could do, but I would love to see one of your lessons in actual time. It'd be interesting to hear the kids' takes on things and the discussions you have, but I understand if you'd feel that would be a violation of their privacy or too complicated.
How do you tackle sex ed? Do you teach your kids about different sexualities? With 8 children one of them is bound to be not-straight. I don't think it's ever too early to learn about the spectrum of sexuality and how families can look. I don't know what it's like in schools these days but when I was in school we learned hardly anything about LGBTQIA+ history. Would love to see a video on this if it's something you include in your homeschool 💖

Seriously? 8 children and 1 of them is bound to be gay? I have 7 and no, none of them are gay. I refuse to push the gay agenda. It's sin period

You can implement your kids curriculum too. Even if you have only one hour (quality, not quantity) during the weekends, it's possible to teach your kids with those extras that are as important as Math, ELA, Science and others. One hour per week can make a hige difference.
Also, if you're Catholic, the Good and The Beautiful has resources for teaching about sexuality.

Very good video. I agree with your view and approach to teaching a whole view of the world and history. Although we are Christians, I believe my children need to understand all the views and theories out there and talk about how to put themselves in different people’s shoes based on their different beliefs. It is best for them to explore the different views/theories out there and be able to discuss it with my husband and I, especially ideas that may challenge our beliefs.
