Glad you got to these guys. They always struck me as having the same position in jazz as Toto has in rock. They have been very successful with super commercial smooth jazz/pop stuff, and purists hate them for it, and then they rear up on their hind legs and rip your face off with stuff like this. Their reach is massive and they can do anything. And live, they have the energy of a rock act. A great, super diverse catalog to explore. Incredible composers and arrangers.

Thanks Mickey D 😎. I saw Spyro Gyra live between the first record and Morning Dance It was on 4th Street in Lubbock Texas at a bar that constantly change names and now that whole part of town has been demolished and has become a freeway. I worked in a record store and played in a band so I was aware of the first album and had bought it. As I recall it was very sparse attendance on a cold Fall night but they played their asses off. The Sax player Jay Beckenstein was smiling the whole time. I think I remember a van in the parking lot with a lot of smoke and musicians pouring out of it, but I could be wrong. 🤪 what a great song selection and they’ve got a ton of music to be reacted to. I recently had just downloaded Catching the Sun and Morning Dance I lost the records years ago. Love it❤️

Welcome to the club! I’ve been a fan of Spyro Gyra since the ‘70’s but I really got into them when I first heard them play live in ‘91-92. I’ve seen them many times over the years and even thought they’ve changed several members over the years, they still put on a great show every time.

Great band, especially Jay Beckenstein on Sax. Saw them in the late 90's with front row seats at a small venue called the 'Playhouse' in a small village called Mt. Gretna in PA. Their earlier albums are my favs.

After having read all the comments I have to say, that I'm surprised. Nobody mentioned, that Jay Beckenstein, co-founder of Spyro Gyra and owner of famous Beartrack studios in NYC is the guy, who played saxophon on Dream Theater's Images and words album.
I had heard of Spyro Gyra since the late 70s, Gerry, a friend and schoolmate of mine, musician and Jazzfusion and progfan, listened to them already back then. I met Gerry in July at the Transatlantic concert in Cologne after 20 years and we talked about concerts. He's an annual visitor of the Leverkusener Jazz Tage, the event of which you lately saw the unbelievable Pick up the pieces version of Candy Dulfer.
He told me he's going in Nov 22 again, this time to see Billy Cobham and Spyro Gyra - Spyro Gyra's complete concert is on youtube. So is the one of Candy Dulfer 2022. I just talked to him in the phone today asking, why he didn't go to see her and he said, she was early sold out.
So right after the concert in Cologne I decided it's time to buy a Spyro Gyra record and it turned out to be Morning Dance.
Nick just said, he thought they are more commercial. Actually I know some of the newer stuff (I think 90s) and it's definitely "easier to digest", so I would say this here is the real Spyro Gyra 🤘

  • @unichusettsofmassadversity9705

I saw them in Boston, 2017? at a club with maybe 100-125 people? So intimate and the drummer and bassists virtually stole the show in my mind. SO good. Go see them!

Hi Nick, I have not heard any music by Spyro Gyra but I have seen their album covers over the decades and I often wondered what they were like. With all the albums I was already buying on a regular basis, as most of my wages went on records, this group never really crossed my path. I was curious, and now I'm listening to this and wondering why didn't I ever hear this before ? This is sooo good I'm already opening another browser to go on Amazon to check out their albums.....Just listening to the last track, as I'm about to search, so decided to type first .... and I'm staying on here .... as Amazon is on hold when this is over. This is a brilliant marathon. I always say to myself ... if this sounds this good on my small computer speakers ...how is this gonna sound through my hi-fi system ? Wow ! .... So glad I now know what Spyro Gyra sound like ... and I can't wait to hear more !!! Thankyou !!! Byee Jim X

Tom is retiring from band ... He is moving to Europe ...so sad. Have been listening to these guys since late 70s. I was looking for some music to play during wedding receptions and dinner time as I was a DJ. Heard these guys at another wedding. The vibe they had was so awesome. My musical tastes are eclectic from Chicago to Rush to Disco to Steely Dan. My younger brother who DJd with me had different tastes but we both fell head over heels. City Kids is the best.

Sorry, Nick, I'd hoped this would get more views. I grew up listening to Spyro Gyra, as my hometown is about 60-90 min from where they were formed. I suppose they are a bit niche, or are known for the "elevator" tracks, which is as you now know a real shame because they're so much more than that.

I bought their 1st album as a throw away for AU$1.68 in 1979 not knowing anything about them, I just loved the album cover. Bought "Morning Dance" soon after and also loved that album cover. Sadly lost my way in music appreciation and this marathon has renewed my interest to listen to much more of their music. Thanks again from Australia.
