2:29 - This might be a call back to something that happens in the Red Dwarf novel "Backwards" during a version of the scene where Ace Rimmer first arrives. Except it's Kryten doing the butt-plugging. As it were.
7:48 - Yeah, as a master procrastinator myself that passage from IWCD hit waaaay too close to home :(
    PS - it's "eye-oh" not "ee-oh" ;)

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed season 10 and was genuinely disappointed that they didn't choose to end the series with The Beginning, which would have been the PERFECT bookend to the series as a whole.
Like you, I don't actually hate seasons 11 and 12 (I especially liked that that dialed Cat's wardrobe back to something that felt more in character to me) and there's certainly a few good episodes in there, because I remember enjoying what I saw, but I also barely remember them which isn't a good sign for one Red Dwarf series, much less two.

Love Haugie the Rougey - you could have loads of throw away scenes with him popping up at the start and end of episodes as a recurring character - that history is all there in this episode.

I really love series 10 overall, especially this episode. I think the callbacks to season one meant this probably was written as an ending for the entire show, in case they didn't get another season, especially as Craig Charles was still working full time on Coronation Street at this point, and Danny was being called away each year to shoot Death in Paradise, so they didn't know if the actors would be available again for a while. They did the same thing at the end of season 12, what with Norman Lovett coming back, and Rimmer wearing his original costume, though we know they are still likely to continue the show!

Rimmer has always been my favourite character so I was probably always going to love this season in general and this episode in particular but I think everyone had good stuff to do - 'Fathers and Suns' is one of my top Lister stories. I like Kochanski more than most (though I agree she was badly treated by Season 8) so I was a little disappointed she never showed up but it was sweet to see she wasn't forgotten. I guess overall I'm in the same boat as you - I liked 11 and 12 but this would have been a great point to end the show on.

I maintain that at some point between Only the Good and Back to Earth, Rimmer died (again), and they brought him back as a hologram, and uploaded the memories of the old Rimmer that they had stored somewhere (doesn't really matter where), so he remembers everything up to when the old Rimmer became the new Ace, as well as his memories from Season 8.

Though I had the idea that Rimmer found a way back in time went into the mirror world and got the antidote and returned at the point of the original deleted ending but died after touching death in the broadcast ending and after that they did the whole bring back as hologram but keep the memories of both rimmers.

Season 10 was great, and this was my favourite episode of the whole season. I thought Rimmer overcoming his issues with his father due to his change of perception about who he is and where he is from was the perfect way to tie up his story.
This show has also always made low level commentary on British class-ism, and I thought this played into that well.
I cannot wait for your commentary on the next two seasons.

This was a brilliant review to wrap up this season with.
Hearing you talk about "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers" really makes me want to hear your opinion on the Red Dwarf novels. I know some of them copy individual episodes beat for beat, but things like "better than life" where there is no constraints on things like a budget and the creators were free to write down whatever fantasies they wanted for each of the characters was great (Cat easily has the best fantasy). Maybe you'll talk about those one day after the series wraps up. :)

Also has a great Cat moment when he's talking to Rimmer which I'm guessing you'll talk about more in the Cat video. While Series 11 and 12 do have good episodes, I agree that The Beginning would have been a fitting last episode for the reasons you mentioned. As is, if we don't get anymore Red Dwarf, I'm also quite happy with how Series 12 ended as well, but this one was still better.

I am not a fan of the father reveal personally. i think the past series have given us enough on why Rimmer is the way he is and its simply down to his upbringing... while this episode at times gives off the impression his bloodline is a big part of why he is a failure, rather than the simple idea that Rimmer was sculpted by his upbringing.
After over 8+ series of explaining Rimmers character, this episode tries to take all of that and throw a spanner into it that sounds more grander then what the 30 minute of episode is able to cover.
Especially when about 5 episodes previous we also had another twist with Howard being exactly like Rimmer... its like what was once a simple set up for Rimmers family has become a game of twist. just without the screentime to cover how anything makes sense to the legacy and everything we had heard about in the series.

    • @casanovafunkenstein5090

I disagree with your assessment regarding this.
I feel that having Rimmer's brother be subject to the same neuroses and failures is consistent with what has been established before.
Rimmer himself is also stated to have lied to his family about being an officer in an early episode where he gets the letter that confirms his father's death.
Rimmer's father himself is a failure who wasn't able to join the space corp because of his height and actively abused his children, placing them on racks to stretch them and denying them food if they failed to answer quizzes about space travel causing Arnold to divorce his parents, essentially gaining emancipation so that he could get away from the toxicity of his home life. It's also no wonder that his mother had so many affairs outside of the marriage given the monstrous way her husband treated everyone around him.
Learning that he wasn't part of some ancient noble bloodline and didn't have to live up to the absurd levels of expectation put upon him in concert with learning that the brothers he envied were just as broken as him would enable him to see his father for the pathetic little man he was.
Rimmer still has issues with the way he treats the people around him and refuses to accept responsibility for many of his personal failings but a lot of that is tied to his wish to emulate and impress the man who routinely physically and emotionally abused him and his siblings, and possibly his mother as well.
Tl,Dr: this arc of Rimmer moving beyond his abusive childhood is handled fairly well in my opinion, though the fact that future episodes don't reference this development much is a bit disapointing IMO.

Looking back series 10 is better than I felt at the time, I think letting time pass and then giving a rewatch can help sometimes, when you watch things as they come out it can be hard to process especially with complex plots like this show has. I agree this probably should've been the last series though and Doug deliberately trolling the audience about how series 8's finale is never resolved is just a big fingers up to the fandom in my opinion and yes you should do a video about that as his sloppy approach to plotline resolutions should be highlighted. Anyway Ive caught up to your latest video now so now I guess Ill have to wait a while for your next. Good analysis anyway though your viewpoints are interesting, cheers.

  • @PartigradeCannon

My theory on Rimmer's timeline was that his Season 8 self died at some point, and they made a new Rimmer that combined the Season 6 Rimmer just before he left to become Ace and Season 8 Rimmer. Or he's our Rimmer that became Ace Rimmer who decided that being Ace wasn't for him so he ditched being Ace and returned to the crew, and they incorporated dead Season 8 Rimmer into him (by design or by accident).
