One of their biggest songs. I remember watching this video on mtv when it came out in 1984, it was in heavy rotation. There were 4 members back then, guitar, bass, keyboards ,and drums. Today it's just 2 of them.
Disturbed covered this song on their debut album in 2000.

Yeah there's this one, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, and Mad World are the ones I can think of. I remember the Disturbed one, but I didn't like that cover as much as Land of Confusion or The Sound of Silence

@@AceofBadeReacts Yeah, they had their finger on the pulse for certain in the 80's. Because there was no internet it was all about seeing it on music shows here in the UK (there was really only one music show that EVERYBODY watched) and playground buzz at school. Ahhh... the distant, neon, slightly damp 80's.

Tears For Fears have always been a duo, but they've enlisted other musicians at various stages of their career. Ian Stanley on Keyboards played a big part in this album and their previous album The Hurting, the drummer is Manny Elias. By their third album Tears For Fears had dropped Stanley and and enlisted other musicians, including guest musicians on various songs, Phil Collins played a drum part on their single Woman In Chains, which also included the beautiful and supremely talented Oleta Adams on piano and guest vocals. The two members of Tears For Fears are Roland Orzebal vocals and guitar, and Curt Smith on vocals and bass. TFF are unique in the fact that both singers sing lead vocal on certain songs. Roland who sings Shout, has a real powerful voice which is suited to this kind of song. Curt's voice isn't as powerful but it is very soulful. Curt in fact, sings lead vocal on their biggest hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World, he also sings lead on their earlier hit singles, Mad World, Change and Pale Shelter, but whoever sings, they usually team up for the chorus where their voices blend beautifully together. Please check out Woman In Chains which has Roland sharing vocals with Oleta Adams, and Advice For The Young At Heart which has Curt on lead vocal.

@@AceofBadeReacts On the third album yes, they broke up after the third album, and didn't speak to each other for 9 years. Roland made two further albums under the TFF banner. The duo reformed in 2004 and made a new album appropriately called, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending. Curt had started recording with an american musician called Charlton Petus. Petus worked on the 2004 album with the duo, and performed on stage with the duo during their world tours, they added another American called Doug Petty, they also have an american drummer called Jamie Wollen, the six piece stage group is completed by a female vocalist, usually Carina Round, but they have also used Lauren Evans when Carina has been busy touring with her band. In 2017, Roland's long time wife died. The duo recorded a new album in 2022 with their stage band playing on the recording, the album is called The Tipping Point, and features a couple of songs about the death of Roland's wife, the title track, which both Roland and Curt sing throughout, and a song called Please Be Happy, Roland broke down everytime he tried to record the vocal for the song, so he asked Curt to sing it, it is very poignant and beautiful, and Curt gives it the treatment the song deserves, Curt having known Roland's wife from school.

They are a great band, & still performing today. An updated live performance video of Woman in Chains with Oleta Adams, is a good one.
''Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath in 1981 by Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears were associated with the new wave synthesizer bands of the 1980s, and attained international chart success as part of the Second British Invasion.''

I love it's therapeutic 'shout, shout' chant but underneath all that is a simmering rage or resentment that strikes me more than the chorus BUT !!! (make your own big but jokes) as the song builds and he shouts (ha ha) "I'd really love to BREAK your heart", that gets me in the chest every time then the guitars krang through the to the fade out... Masterpiece. Recommend Tears For Fears - Sowing the Seeds.

Interesting how you don't hear the guitar before you paused. The drums & keys are prevalent but so is Roland Orzabal's rhythm guitar playing. And despite this song being predominantly drums & keys-centric, what makes this song standout is Orzabal's amazing guitar solo towards the conclusion of the song.
