This one turned out more interesting then I originally thought! I had recorded this with how I used to do it in the past, showed it to someone at work and then he showed me another even cooler way to do it. So I re-recorded the video to include both techniques.

I think your problem with centering the displacement was/is that you had 1 in z pos in ray intersect . I think it should be 0, -10, 0
how would you go about just rendering the displacement out of the composite window?
you can just put a rop in the image network and write it out as a exr sequence
