I couldn’t do what these guys do, these guys are true warriors with a mental fitness and strength most of us mere mortals can only wish for. I admire and respect them enormously for the sacrifices they have made and continue to make. They are a special breed, so glad we have people like this that are prepared to do the things they do to keep us safe. They do this with little or no public recognition, perhaps that’s right perhaps it’s not, we owe them a debt of gratitude that we cannot repay. I just wish I could buy them a drink to say thank you, it’s the least I can do.

my family was vacationing in fl about 15 years ago. i was 15. a british sub was anchored in port for some political meet & greet ceremony & the royal navy men were put up in condos on our floor. they were the greatest guys & although very polite & kind to everyone, you could tell they were rough & tough ( & a bit crazy) enough for any battle & living undersea for months at a time.
the floridians were very patriotic & welcomed these soldiers with open arms & respect. bartenders & customers bought them drinks & restaurant owners picked up their tabs. the soldiers were in awe of their good treatment. 1/ they told us many brits looked down on soldiers as many of them were lower income, less educated rough kids. 2/they couldnt believe how beautiful florida was...the soft sand beaches, the warm & sunny weather, etc... they wanted to come live there after getting discharged. we invited them to dinner one night & then they insisted on taking my dad out drinking with them on their last night & my dad who got home about 3am told us he had to sneak out through the kitchen because they kept buying him shots & didnt want him to leave! & wow could they drink! lol.
the next day we found a hms royal navy submarine hat on our door knob. it had the one of the guys name on it inside. my dad of course has the hat in one of his bookcases & when ever i see it, i think of them & wonder if they are all ok & if anyone of them made it back to florida. we have so much respect for our military from all our allies.

The death of the ISIS leader on the other hand the SAS was actually involved in the planning, recon and intelligence gathering before the operation.

Btw first into action by Duncan falconer is an excellent detailed account of serving in the sbs. He mentions an exercise where 6 of them were dropped by Heli on an uninhabited Scottish island midwinter. Stark bollock naked. With a 20 metre roll of hessian, and absolutely nothing else, to be picked up in seven days time.
Which I would guess is a fairly primal lesson in teamwork.

in ww2 my dad (rip) was in a danish SBS commando unit ,trained by a famed hong kong trainer who also trained the British SBS back then. they were placed on armament cargo ships to keep off saboteur frogmen /enemy /pirates heading into the Asia pacific war zone. he was trained in fight to kill hand to hand combat including knife/Bayonet. he would play demonstrate his moves for fun when we were kids and we wanted to learn how to do them but he said no you might accidentally kill someone. his moves and boxing looked amazing and scary. he so fast it was like a blur. an unsuspecting thug/attacker would not know what hit him the end.....

I suspect he saw other action which was never Publicly known.
