Loved working with the Brits downrange. Some of the craziest guys I've ever seen. Had a casevac where a brit had his hand blown to bits and as he walks on the ramp of the bird he waves to me with his shredded hand, fingers flopping all over. Talk about a good sense of humor

@@chrisbenson2430 that’s what gives the Brit soldiers on the ground the edge, they don’t rely on support assets to complete the mission, their soldiers use guile, intelligence & incredible soldering skills to get the job done. There's a grittiness that sets UK SF apart from other special forces. They often still adopt a back-to-basics approach which in my opinion makes them the best soldiers in the world. They'll happily select a 20km insertion march to catch the enemy by surprise rather than the land-on-target approach that seems to be the norm amongst most countries. This applies to Royal Marine Mountain Leaders too.
I'm not saying they're necessarily a more effective force than other nations' units but that they offer something other counties Special Forces can't - UKSF would be the perfect guerrilla unit if the UK was ever invaded.

And we were often well supported by very loyal and brave Indian troops. I visited a graveyard, along with a friend, in France about 30 years ago to look for his uncles grave, a soldier of the 6th Durham Light Infantry Battalion who was killed in WW2. We found him along with a dozen other British soldiers killed on the same day in 1940. There graves were surrounded by over 70 graves of Indian and Sikh soldiers, many from cavalry units, who were laid to rest after having been killed in that area during WW1. We layed some flowers that we had with us on my friends uncles grave but also on a couple of the Indian troops graves as well to show our respects. The local, civilian, graveyard was very overgrown but the military part was immaculate with cut grass and a single planted flower in front of each headstone. The Commonwealth / War Graves Commission tends hundreds of cemeteries in Europe, and in fact all over the World, to this high standard.

Loved the photo with the eyes of the dog blacked out! We must not be able to recognise him! Our family as service with the Royal Marines going back to around 1880. My great grandfather served on sailing ships; hybrid sailing/steam and finally steam; was involved with the last Opium War. My grandfather was transferred from the RMC to the newly formed Machine Gun Corps in WW1; my father was a RM commando in WW2 landing in Normandy on DDay. Now one of our sons is a RM commando, having gone through the gruelling 9 months selection process (winning the Commando Medal for his troop) and has served about a year in a squadron. He is now being put forward for SFSG as a pre-cursor, he hopes, for SF. I said to him last night that, with the grit and determination he has showed to date, he can achieve whatever he wants.
Now our the UKSF the best? I don’t know the criteria by which this can be measured. I know that, on a recent training exercise in Virginia with the USMC, the USMC came….how should I say……very much second? But whether they are the best? In a sense, who cares? The reality is that this bunch of men and women making up the UKSF, are trained to the peak of their ability and beyond and prepared to sacrifice it all for their mates. What scares me is the calibre of politician and even the calibre of the most senior military personnel, who will make the decisions that mean life or death to these men and women. I’m told that De La Billiere was regarded as the finest and most trustworthy superior officer; perhaps because he didn’t actively seek promotion.

We also lead many advanced engineering fields and really, our armed forces are an extension of British exceptionalism. We have an insane amount of things to be proud of, not least and most recently producing the first covid vaccine and producing research that has saved millions of lives. Our military tech is unsurprisingly some of the best in the world, take the Type 45 destroyer which is widely acknowledged (especially by our American brothers) as the best/most capable ship of that class in the world or how we have deployed our military (for training and other support operations) and weaponry to Ukraine to defend against Russia to devastating effect. MLAW, StarStreak are terrifying weapons if you’re in the Russian army.

A lot of the SAS troops mid GWOT wore American flag patches because they had integrated with American JSOC task force. A lot people don’t realize how easy it is to get into a friendly fire incident in daylight let alone at night under NVGs. The SAS wanted their profiles to look American as possible to minimize the risk.. Both SAS and Delta Force would at times work with Kurdish and Iraqi CT units and the same thing was applied there, the Yanks and Brits would wear the cammo pattern and patches of those units so no confusion would happen when the chaos of a gunfight started
