    Renault - We make F1 engines, and occasionally run a works F1 team... usually called Renault.
    Alpine, nee Renault - "I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"
    Andretti - "So when F1 said our bid didn't cut the mustard, was that English or French?"
    Might we see a return of the Toleman name? What does the foam of doubt think?
    PS: Always assuming Andretti and Chevrolet continue to be unreasonably blocked, what happens if Stroll continues to refuse to pull his finger out or leave Aston? What if 'Alpine' with a new Honda engine and two proper drivers starts to do better than Aston!?!

My guess is that they are looking at the engine regulations, their current technology, and design and have found that they will not be able to compete against other engine manufacturers. So, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to change your supplier to something more competitive while reducing the expenses of building an engine. Not to mention, Alpine becoming a customer team does not only give Honda and Aston an entry way, but also Cadillac/GM an entry to F1 too. I know losing the works team status is a big deal but it's a bigger deal not making the necessary changes to succeed.

It would piss off a lot of people in the short term, but Enstone has such a huge reputation in F1 history that inevitably someone (either a pre-existing team, or an interested third party like a Lawrence-Stroll type character or a former driver) would buy it, and it could even end up as a "stealth" method of getting an extra team onto the grid. You're forgetting the part where Alpine allocated€150 million to be spent modifying and redeveloping the V36 specifically for their hypercar.
      Nico Lapierre: "It has been a lot of work to adapt this engine to endurance racing. The structure is the same, but everything inside has been changed and one of the strengths of Alpine, they have a lot of engine bench in Viry-Châtillon, and I can assure you that the engine was running a lot on the bench."
      “The engine control system is also fully specific to the A424 and entirely developed and calibrated by Alpine Racing in Viry"
      Claiming they had nothing to do with the engine is just cope. They wanted to save money by modifying and engine instead of building it from scratch and it blew up in their face.
      Again €150 budget in the first 12 months alone.

    The engine development freeze was ahuge mistake. Nowadays if you come out the gate with an underperforming engine, you can kiss goodbye any chance at being competitive until the regulations change.

    • @valerierodger
      @valerierodger 3 дні тому

      ??? Apparently, you don’t understand the engine development freeze. Who do you think would’ve been coming out of the gate with an underperforming engine? Why do you think that the manufacturers who have shown interest in F1 in recent years weren’t looking to enter until 2026?
      The development freeze has only ever applied from partway through 2022 until the end of 2025.
      The only reason it exists is to give teams a chance to work on the 2026 engine without having to keep up with a development race with the current engines.
      F1 had already reached the point where no new engine manufacturer was going to join, specifically because it’s a given that when you first enter into F1, your engine isn’t going to be competitive at first, and no manufacturer was going to put in the time and money into developing an engine when the engine regulation change on the horizon - it would have been too much investment into something that was just going to get scrapped by the time it had a chance of being successful.

    if Renault does not want to leave, then I don't think they will. If Alpine goes to FIA saying they don't have an engine, the FIA would almost certainly ask Renault to supply them first. After all honda and audi might only have a single team they'd be supplying but Renault would be at 0, if Renault wants to stay and no oter team wants Alpine then I don't think the FIA will be in a hurry to save them just because it would make Bruno happier.

    Honda benefitted since 2019 from gathering data from 4 instead of 2 cars when it came to engine development (up until the engine freeze). Surely they would be interested in doubling their cars for 2026. Honda as a carmaker also obviously sees no conflict of interest with their Aston partnership, as they sell roadcars for different audiences (bar the NSX). The same could be said about Alpine, although Honda and Renault are rivals for road cars. Renault buying F1 engines from one of their competitors does seem somewhat embarrasing.
