  • Just when you thought things were over for Andretti and F1...it wasn't.
In a shocking twist, the United States Senate is pushing the DOJ and FTC to investigate Formula 1 and Liberty Media for potential antitrust violations, focusing on the Andretti family's controversial blocked entry into the sport. Mario Andretti's explosive claims that Liberty Media's CEO made personal comments to prevent Michael Andretti from joining F1 could have massive repercussions if proven true. This high-stakes drama is fueled by Michael's past struggles and sabotage allegations in F1, adding more intrigue. Despite the resistance, the Andretti team has been making bold strategic moves, partnering with General Motors and hiring key personnel to ensure their readiness for F1. If Liberty Media is found guilty of antitrust violations, they could face severe legal and financial consequences, including potential governmental oversight and substantial penalties, shaking the sport to its core. Dive deep into the unfolding drama, strategic maneuvers, and potential fallout in this gripping video that captures the very essence of racing's most significant controversies!

Unless only your teammate is getting the upgrades lol, like what is happening to Logan due to Williams' financial woes. I'd imagine this isn't the first time that has happened, but it's also not some kind of a conspiracy, it's public.
I suppose you also have a case when the car is heavily designed around one specific driver who drives differently from you... Like Red Bull designing for heavy oversteer for Verstappen which surely hurts Perez's performance when compared to the two of them driving a neutral car... Again it's not really a secret though, and in the second case it's not even really a problem, it just is what it is.
I could actually see that second scenario being the case if the other driver is Senna, but I also don't know the scene from back then. Also in that situation it is hardly some personal attack against you, it's just the struggles of teaming with a world champion.

Liberty owns Live Nation and Ticketmaster (which merged with Live Nation in 2010). The big reason it's a problem is that Ticketmaster has a near monopoly on ticket sales and LN has a near monopoly on event promotion. It's why there are inflated 30-50 USD surcharges on each ticket for fees, etc. along with scalpers and bots, trying to control the reseller market, etc.
Congress already had enough to investigate on bots and people unable to buy tickets for Beyonce, Swift etc and have to find tickets marked up god knows how much on the reseller market that TM also tries to control. F1 is just another "in" for them to investigate.

I can totally see the US winning a case against Liberty Media due to high prices. I attended Laguna Seca this year for IMSA. 3 Day weekend pass was $120 at pre-sale and the price was raised just $25 two weeks before leading to the event. The camping only cost $250 for all 3 days. I mean, we are talking about a full experience, including walking around the paddock, meeting drivers and having access to any part of the track for under $500. The track is ran by the county (government). Yeah, Liberty Media is screwed on this one.

The Compettion and Markets Authority has been strangely quiet on this, they were last heard making noise about the MS/Activision merger so I wonder if this has in fact been brought to their attention but they haven't actually got to it yet? My question is in a few years when most in the U.S. don't care about it anymore. Will they still want to be a part of F1. As an American I can remember when NASCAR had over a 100,000 people a race.
For every race. Now most tracks have had to take out most of their grandstands. NASCAR is struggling.
In five years it will go back to how it was and just us hard core motor race fans of all series will care . Andretti could have gotten in when Gene Hass did but he didn't.

If Liberty and F1 play their cards right and allow Andretti to be the 11th team, they could see themselves as the NFL for motorsports in America, bringing in more money into the organization than several European GPs combined. Heck, it would solidify F1 in the US which could very much bring a 4th US GP, say the return of the F1 circus to GM's HQ in Detroit.

To be fair, Haas came in when it was quite risky and expensive and really weathered a lot of things to finally cash in. Andretti had plenty of opportunity to get in earlier, but didn’t. I think it’s a credible entry to F1 and I want to see them in, but I get F1’s reluctance. Andretti outside motorsport circles isn’t that huge. Their social media numbers seriously pale in comparison to any F1 team. Although they are upper half of the grid in most series they are in, they aren’t dominating in either. I hope they get in, but F1’s reasons aren’t completely baseless, well some of them. The competitive reasonings were stupid. As a business case they are right. Haas and Logan aren’t bringing in the numbers. Even with Haas, Gunther though technically a US citizen, was never sold as that.

Buy one of the existing teams, you mean the ones that don't want to sell because F1 is now a gigantic cash cow? Or maybe he should buy RedBull 2 electric Boogaloo in the RB which is absurd that is even allowed and I'm sure will be brought up in the DoJ and FTC's complaints.

      @NewtypeCommander Місяць тому

Yeah, I call bullcrap on Horner's response. If all of the teams (even the backmarkers) are turning a decent profit, then there's no urgent incentive to sell. So, if not a single team is interested in selling their slot on the grid, what's the point of even trying to put together a buyout deal?

Beyond what you have outlined @LawVS, I have my own theory as to why Liberty Media and the teams have been so resistant to adding another team with my own "Foam of Doubt" I call the "Sock of Skepticism."
As you postulated in a previous video, the FIA had been the ones to put out the call for grid expansion, and that the commercial arm side was dismissive about the whole thing. Well, I would take that a step further. I think the teams and Liberty Media were outright insulted that the FIA would put out this call without consulting the commercial and management sides of F1; they took it as a slight as usually they are the ones that get a say on who gets in and who does not. Gunther Steiner pointed out in an episode of "The Red Flags" podcast that he had to build a veritable army of connections and contacts so that he could set up meetings with the right people so that HAAS could get in. Once he had a list, he would "smooze" them over with private dinners where they could discuss business quietly, something you mentioned in another previous video that the old guard of F1 prefers. He would use these meetings and connections to help create a smooth pathway for the burgeoning HAAS team that would allow them to obtain a spot on the grid by as he said, "by respecting the authorities" and not bruising egos.
With all that said, I don't think it was wrong for the FIA to call for an expansion of the grid, but I think it was naive of them to start this on their own. However, this fiaco could actually work in Andretti's and the FIA's favor. If the commercial arm had no intention approving any of the prospective entrants that the FIA put forward, regardless of who they are, then that could be seen as a form of wire fraud in the court of law. And if there was collusion between LM and just one of the teams, then that could escalate into a RICO case where there could be a "discovery phase" of the case where the secrets of the commercial arm are exposed for all to see and criminal penalties such as jail time.
Would it get to that point, who knows? It may be better if all sides reached a settlement in the matter that wouldn't bring disrepute to F1. My idea would be to toss a few lead figures *cough*Maffei*cough* to the curb, come up with a way for Andretti to enter smoothly without ruffling feathers and satisfies the teams, all in exchange for dropping a potentially damaging lawsuit.

A lawsuit that could go up to the billions of dollars, not to mention public and historical humiliation... just take lessons from what FIFA experienced during their investigation by the USDOJ, and basically give Andretti-GM what they want - a place in the F1 grid.

Now those sport marketing executives were holders of media and marketing rights for high profile football tournaments like the qualifying tournaments for the World Cup for the Americas, as well as showcase events like the Copa America and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
