Lucy Letby: A Healthcare Horror Story

  • This is a tale of a killer hiding in plain sight.
A smiling nurse in blue scrubs caring for the most vulnerable of society.
A smiling nurse who wore a mask for years.
This is not just simply the story of how she carried out her atrocities but why...why was she allowed to get away with it for so long and why the NHS systems are to blame for not picking this up sooner.

My brother is 18 now, but when he was a baby he was in the hospital for 6 months, he was born with Down syndrome and had a feeding tube. My mom had expressed her concern to a doctor that a nurse wasn’t changing his diapers enough. (He was on meds that made him pee like a crazy little dude)
They acted like she was paranoid mama, so she started marking his diapers with a pen.
Sure as shit one time the pen mark was still there! She showed the doctor who was all sheepish about not sharing her concern and the nurse was reprimanded.

As an ex nurse, if anyone experiences this, go to the nurse's station and complain directly to the nurse in charge. The doctors have nothing to do with most of the care on the ward. They check patients, prescribe things, perform surgeries, check on patients post op, etc but outside of their daily rounds on the ward, they do not have a hand in the 24/7 care. Nurses and AINs (CNA in America) do showering, toileting, feeding, bed baths, wound dressings, pad changes, transfers, pressure area care, medication administration, cannulation if trained, changing IV bags, feeding tube bags and so much more.
If they're being dismissive ask to speak to the NUM. If they say they're not in at the moment, ask when they're next working. It's only going to be annoying to us if we're doing our job and if we are, a good nurse will go through our routine and what we're doing to compensate for your relative if they require extra changes outside of the normal routines.

Yeah, she had a thing for siblings. I hypothesize that her sociopathy is born out of her parent's incessant attention and demands and she always wished she had a sibling to share that attention in order to loosen the pressure.
Alternatively, she liked the 'genetic reasons' explanation of both neonates dying.
Depends on whether she's a sociopath (just a personality disorder) or a psychopath (a personality disorder with brain abnormalities).

Why is it more evil than the original crime? If she had been more evil, she would control herself enough not to make a second attempt because that increased her likelihood of getting caught. The evil was she wanted to kill people and selected the most vulnerable because those are less likely to be noticed

@@gejost I think you have a point, although it's not really the amount of evil but the amount of psychopathy you are talking about. I suspect that she was doing all this prior to the escalation, but the escalation/less evil/less psychopathy was likely to be because of the doctor she fancied.
Although I find it wholy wrong to be calling somebody less evil because they killed more people.

Reminds me of care services for learning disabled people. Systemic abuse, human rights violations and deaths, hundreds of inquiries and reform attempts, but nothing ever seems to change, we just hear "lessons will be learned" and then it's back to business as usual. Often, deaths don't even get investigated, they just get put down as "natural causes" and accepted because the person has a learning disability, even though most conditions don't affect lifespan. It's so depressing. There's also a serious problem with organisations not fully understanding that people have human rights and trying to control people as if they are a child (of course some people lack capacity to decide certain things for themselves, but assessments are not always carried out and organisations often inappropriately assume that people have a complete lack of capacity to decide anything for themselves, which is rarely true.

The toxic environment of the Countess has been a problem for many years, mainly from senior management who just didn’t give a shit. Made my dad give up on his anaesthesiology consultant pathway in the 90’s to become a GP and the bullying my mum got forced her to quit nursing entirely in the early 2000’s. Took her about 20 years before she could get back to the profession she loved. It’s no surprise to me something like this happened, despite many opportunities to learn from previous mistakes, staff never got taken seriously by the upper echelons. It’s really tragic

Thank you for speaking so openly about such a thorny subject. We had a case here some years ago where a nurse forgot a baby in a malfunctioning incubator and the child, though he survived, was badly burned on large surfaces and needs repeated surgeries until he will turn 18. Gross negligence as it was and not criminal intent, the nurse only got a sentence of a few months with suspension and no other retribution for her still criminal carelessness, while the family keeps struggling with the child's permanent disabilities. I'm afraid around here the trust in the health field isn't at all what it used to be...

I know that there are wolves in sheep's clothing everywhere, but I still cannot wrap my head about how someone could be so soulless and cruel to kill an innocent creature, especially a newborn. Even people I know who don't like kids and don't want them would be just as angry as me at these type of monsters. It's like just as I don't think humanity could get worse, it does. However, I understand that holding too much cynicism is harmful, because as much evil as there is in the world, there is good and we have to do everything in our power to maintain faith in humanity to make anything better in the first place.

Sure, we being a social species means that we (usually) want to care for the most vulnerable, but there is always the potential for any human, no matter their look, or profession, to be an absolute monster.

Great video Dr Karan. As a lawyer and spouse of a pilot, one thing is add is that what stands in the way of the medical profession adopting the openness of aviation is the vast medical negligence litigation industry. The records doctors keep can be used to expose errors resulting in suspension of licences and personal liability. It’s no wonder doctors are disincentivised from speaking up when things go wrong.

The head nurse (nurse manager) failed the babies and their families because she didn't prioritize patient safety over Lucy's feelings. Many of these untimely deaths were preventable. The hospital need to do a forensic audit of all the patients who were assigned to this callous woman. 😞😞

One more big difference in error management in aviation vs most other industries is the consequences for the person that made an error. In aviation, at least in the western system, if a crew member/atc/etc. makes an genuine mistake (not a deliberate violation), even if it causes incident, they are not reprimanded/punished. Of course, their ability is evaluated and additional training may be required, but there are no demotions or other consequences except duty limitations made to ensure flight safety. So, a person knows that even if he reports his mistake, it will not cause any serious harm to their career and life, and that's why reporting works.

Really solid reasoning, we only learn from mistakes if we admit they happened.
I’m a victim of a medical mistake and trying to get information on what happened and why was nigh impossible. I wasn’t looking to sue or get rich, I wanted to know what happened so I could try and improve my QoL, which had been impacted by what happened. Yet ‘records’ were missing or not filed and in the end I had to give up, and now any surgery I need is now higher risk because it was not recorded what anesthetic drugs were given to cause cardiac arrest.
It’s also sickening that Lucy no doubt took advantage of the trusting nature of hospital staff to commit her murders. It was calculated; tho why she did it, I guess we won’t know until she reveals why.

I had a medical error happen to me, which resulted in me being blue lighted in a few days later. I demanded an investigation and an apology, the result of the investigation was (I’m paraphrasing) “shit happens, soz” and the apology was delivered to me via a nurse. All I needed was for the surgeon who harmed me to look me in the eye and show remorse, say they’ll do better and apologise. Like you say, we need a blame-free culture and for staff to own their mistakes.

  • @admirallily

I don’t remember which book I read it in but there was the case study of a hospital in the US that had the most toxic culture. One story shared included a man who was supposed to have surgery but for some reason it wasn’t marked which side of body. A nurse brought up the problem but the doctor (known to be an arrogant man) got mad about the potential delay, wrote in his own notes on which side he said it was but only realized after knee deep in surgery they work working on the wrong side of the patient’s body. This was only one of many examples given about the chaos of this issue.
Another story (not same hospital) was a man who committed suicide after surgery. after they got the medical records it was discovered the anesthesiologist gave the paralytic drug but not the ones that would knock the patient out. The patient was conscious for 16 minutes of the gallbladder surgery. The anesthesiologist tried to cover the mistake with an amnesia drug and no one in that OR who all knew about it reported it. Tragic ending that didn’t have to happen.

Thank you for such an informative survey of this horrendous situation, and such a strong message as the conclusion. Unfortunately, it seems that unaccountability will always thrive wherever intransparency and rigid hierarchical structures exist, and the truth can be uncovered only by those who are courageous enough to speak up, even if it means loosing the job.
The stakes in healthcare might be higher than in other places, but just think of all of the things that get swept under the rug in army, schools, elderly care facilities, orphanages. My grandma was physically abused in mental health facility. Friend molested at the kindergarten. And it's only what happened to those close to me and what I know of. The world can be extremely ugly, and while you shouldn't be paranoic about it, never let your guard down and be vigilant. And be prepared to stand up for yourself and the others if the time comes.

I was born in the Countess of Chester, and as a newborn I spent some time on the neonatal intensive care unit (I was pretty badly jaundiced, apparently). It's possible, some of the nurses who looked after me nearly thirty two years ago may have worked with Lucy Letby.
I don't know if we ever will understand *why* she did what she did, but I imagine psychologists will be studying her actions for a long time.

Its a huge burden many of you carry. One of many. Thank you for not shying away; amidst your collective exhaustion, both mentally, physically and emotionally, I wouldn't blame any physician for internalizing these situations, and trying to simply function/ survive/ avoid blowback or workplace politics and pressure.. and simply work and function within the limitations of the human condition. Though I am sure that many, if not most, do struggle substantially. All while needing to be a symbol of strength, reliability, and.. the help. Often at the worst time of other people's lives, there is little room for medical personnel to be human. I see you, and I thank each of you for doing it regardless.
But, beyond ALL OF THAT, you took space within your time, your limited energy, compassion that is often fatigued.. and underappreciated among medical personnel- and you put this out there. Possibly putting a target, or a sociopolitical strain on you/ your life.
You stand, you look forward, despite the pressure being to look down, do your job, and maintain the image of providers.. and the entities that hover over them with immense weight.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing. YOU are the strong and brave, among good people. Thank you for doing what others cannot. ❤ I have immense appreciation and respect for you, and for others like you.
Thank you, for keeping the standard for humanity within reason, when many choose not only not to, but to get in the way- in order to protect their agenda.
Solid. You're a solid human. We need you more than ever. ❤

The letter was passed on to the CEO at the time, Caroline Shaw (yes she deserves to be named and shamed), she quickly wrote back and told me i was a liar and she believed her staff. I wrote back again. Probably much to her suprise, she didn't bother to reply. Eventually, several months later someone else was put in charge of dealing with complaints, actually investigated my claims, and guess what, found out i wasn't lying after all. Infuriating, but the nhs bosses always stick together no matter what. I've lost a lot of trust in that hospital since, even though she's now gone.

Another thing the aviation industry does well is discuss accidents and incidents at all levels. The reports get shared among everyone responsible for maintaining and operating the particular aircraft type, and they also get analysed and reprinted in books and magazines. Private pilot association magazines usually have a featured accident in every issue, and that is almost always the part of the magazine that is most discussed. One of my relatives was both a private pilot and a member of the armed forces, and he was always telling my family about the latest accidents and incidents. He didn't fly planes at work, but he was very informed about what could go wrong with the planes his colleagues flew. Being that open with information-sharing just makes the whole field safer.

It is staggering to know that the top bosses of the NHS are not held to account for their lack of responsibility and action. Yet they award themselves some of the highest bonuses around for doing very little to nothing.
The NHS is in the situation it is, due to poor, ineffective, misguided, irresponsible, and lack of com0etent management.
Universities are also to blame, as they, like the big bosses of the NHS. Are solely concerned with lining their pockets as much and as quickly as possible and then when something like this happens.
Steps back and takes no responsibility for.not putting in place, measure to ensure suitability.
