“Her husband drives quickly so they can make it-“
“To the ER right?”
“-home.”
You wot m8? She’s going blind
They live in the US. Healthcare there is expensive and something tells me that if a person is willing to drink 11 liters of distilled water, they may not have that much money. Its truly a sad story

Well, she couldn't very well make her husband dinner in the ER could she??
If my wife had told me that she was "coming out of her skull with headache pain" and "her right eye was going dark" I would have immediately driven her to the ER.
Word Unheard ikr

No doubt abt it..!!
I make E.R. trips for far less.
Ya
I remember this happening, the radio station said it wasn’t its fault and that there was no way that anyone could see this would be dangerous. The radio station was inundated with phone calls from healthcare workers to say that this was really dangerous and they were all ignored.
Yeah, apparently the staff had decided to do this without telling anyone in charge (the higher ups likely would have said ‘what? No, that’s dumb-‘ and not allowed it) and apparently at least once on the radio said “these guys signed forms so it’s ok-“ like they knew something bad could happen but intentionally didn’t say anything.
1. You’re not supposed to drink distilled water
2. THREE FUCKING GALLONS OF ANY LIQUID IS DANGEROUS
He explains this in the end
@@dr.altoclef9255 As a lawyer, it's wild to me that so many people think having a person "sign a release" is a blanket get-out-of-jail-free card. A person can't just "sign a release" to do something that is so likely maim or kill them.
Not to mention, the release she signed was a generic form used for anyone and everyone who appeared on the radio show. It was basically permission to record and air her appearance. It did absolutely nothing to disclose the medical risks of the contest.
@@vanessahutcheson9510I mean yeah, were seriously banking on the ‘they signed a release’…
Their voices were recorded, there’s record of them being told it was dangerous, so they couldn’t argue ignorance.
In the real story, a contestant died, 10 people were fired, the show was canceled, the station was sued, and eventually went under. The worst part is a nurse called in strongly warning them, and they said, yeah, we know it's dangerous but they signed waivers.
I remember a nurse calling into that show, warning them to stop, cause that can kill someone
That's the reason the family was awarded several million in the lawsuit against the station, they actually had multiple callers warn them and ignored it.
I heard of this accident some time ago and thought wtf why on earth is this happening in the 21st century
Wait, are those calls publicized?
@@yasumitodaka1013 or pubic hair
I would imagine this would have been less severe if they hadn't used distilled water but still extremely dangerous.
things i’ve learnt from chubbyemu:
- don’t drink lava lamps, snow globes, soy sauce, or 3 gallons of water
- always take exactly the right amount of supplement
- don’t eat questionable food, a pound of chocolate, or silica gel
- don’t over exercise
- don’t sit for 72 hours straight
- water flows towards salt
- emia means presence in blood
- tell your doctor everything
- it’s possible to pee out your muscles
- don’t do tiktok trends
- don’t be licked by your dog
- mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
hah I literally watched all of these in the past week since finding this channel
Oh shit i drink soy sauce
Getting licked is fine... Unless you are immunocompromised somehow
rhabdo means striped or striated, or in this case, skeletal
-emia meaning prescence in blood
Its so shocking to me that he literally starts his channel as a gaming channel , then switches to many contents like body building , how to lose a lot of fat , motivation , and even some technical things , and then he continuously uploaded a medical content for the channel
I used to watch his gaming contents but then i got super interested in his medical content , keep up the good work man ^^ !
Turns out he is better at being a doctor than being a dietician or a coach or sports psychologist... Maybe university teaches you stuff you can't Google... 😁 I'm sure he was a great gamer though I must look that up
I love his older videos! He has so much personality but that rarely comes through on his med vids. I've watched him for years also and I'm so proud of everything he's accomplished. A lot of people would have deleted their older or cringier things but they are some of my favorite vids. Especially the motivational ones. 💖
And, let us never forget: "I'm f**kin JACKED" hehehehe 😂😁💖
Water overdose is not a joke!!! Happened to me last summer, began with the worst migraine of my life. I kept drinking water, trying to stop the head pain.
It was shortly followed by throwing up litres & litres of water.
Heaving for hours with a brain-stabbing migraine is not something I would recommend.
Thankfully I eventually threw up enough water to avoid a trip to the ER & managed to fall asleep as the migraine wore off. I'm glad my friend recognized the signs of water toxicity and potentially saved my life.
Things i learned:
>dont drink too much water
>dont hold you pee
>emia meaning presence in blood
Edit: Holy crap thanks for 10k likes
i think you copied this from the soy sauce video

If you know how the story has a much different ending...please reply me, I’ll really appreciate it. Thanks.

Why didn't her husband take her to the hospital after she was telling him she was losing vision in one eye, nausea, and "my head is coming out of my skull"? Yeah, a nap fixes everything...

all memes and -emia laced humor aside you really are enriching all of humanity with the content you make , an accomplished doctor who uses real medical cases , explains them thru engaging visuals, precise editing smooth production while rocking the average viewers world with the sheer volume of KNOWLEDGE that each video is filled with. it's also very evident the time and effort you take in writing these in simple, accessible layman's language that really makes it accessible to any and all ages. it's easy to overlook or gloss over while binge-watching, but it really is obvious how much hard work and passion you have consistently been putting into your content, brotha. I remember this case when I was in 7th grade and my science teacher taught us about it. Totally got me so interested in medical science. Now I’m 19 and trying to study medicine. Thanks for this throwback!
I got very, very confused for a minute there before I figured out what you meant! I was like dude, this happened when *I* was in 7th grade and I’m 29, what time machine do you have??? But finally I realized you meant you were in 7th grade when you learned about this incident.
Wow I never realized the most harmless liquid can be proved deadly internally because of a underlying condition that not even the patient was aware of and it collided with it causing her symptoms.
Man I love your videos (recently discovered it) and you go into full detail about what is going on. I always say the tiny details matter and you straight up dive into it. Also, you don’t overcomplicate your wording like much other profs or other medical-sleuths.
Really earned a sub and a like I’m going to look forward enjoying the rest of your videos.
Sad thing is he is telling an altered story what really happened was she died and her husband sued the radio station. If my mom died just to get me a wii I would be so depressed.
Wat omg
The husband must be a total idiot to let some drink two fucking gallons in one day. What a moron.🙄🙄
He should sue god for allowing the dice to roll snake eyes on his and her I.Q. when they were born.

The radio station should have asked doctors is that safe to drink 3 gallons of water without peeing or vomiting
They should've been sued to the ground.
Shell Shock they've been. Husband won over 16 mln.
whiteangel854, THATS GOOD! However, that 16 mil isnt gonna bring her back. Tsk, tsk, tsk. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it is for the husband.............. I am going to tell my bf not to do something stupid like this. He's a yolo type of guy. I really need to watch over him.
Cristina Rose and Ornstein I never said money could bring her back, compensate her death or it's ok. It isn't. No decent person would do that and no matter how insensitive it sounds she deserved everything that happened.
I can tell you one thing about dating irresponsible people - it's not worth it. I know that it's your bf and you care about him, but eventually you can get "hurt" by his actions. Don't keep an eye on him, don't protect him or he will never learn.

Thanks for this presentation. I have atrial fibrillation and have chronically low blood sodium. I knew little about the seriousness or the details on the effects of these conditions on my body. My a-fib was started by getting hit by lightning years ago. Because of your clear and detailed video, now I know how to take better care of myself. Thanks
On the other hand, and this is something that I learned the hard way after having moved into a desert, where I was living had well water.. turned out it didn't have much for content of anything except the actual h2o, and being who I was I was out in the desert, Hiking, Climbing mountains (high desert in the sangre de cristo range) Turns out lots of sweating, plus lots of water consumption can lead to hyponatremia. I started having pretty much identical symptoms to dehydration or heat stroke, drank more water, sat in the shade, when it didn't stop getting worse in a couple minutes I called for emergency services, luckily I was on a well known trail, and not horribly far in, they dragged me to the hospital, and they took blood, sat me in a waiting area, let me have some water..
I'll never forget the doctors face when he came into the area and saw me with the cup of water and said "Stop it, Not another sip." they gave me an IV of that high sodium fluid.
I learned that day, to put a small amount of salt, or pedialite in my hiking water. scary scary stuff, because the presentation can be the same for if you're dehydrated, only drinking more can kill you...

I grew up on that station and I still think of this event on a fairly regular basis. IIRC the station no longer exists. The hosts were all fired and replaced afterwards and it just didn't recover. Either they scrapped it entirely or moved it to a different station number and name. I was mostly raised by my mother growing up, so the idea of a mother dying from an event she participated in to win her kids and family a new gaming console just shakes me. Also to spread it out, I have had friends who stuck to drinking 2 litres in the morning, only to complain about headaches in the afternoon and thirst in the evening.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday.
Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.
“She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad,” said Laura Rios, one of Strange’s co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. “She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her.”

glad I'm not the only one
i can, but the taste of an icy cold coca cola is tastier, and that is 99% what i drink everyday!!! I am waiting for 7-Eleven to sell big gulps in 5 gallon buckets, called the Insane, Screwy, Put Me In A Mental Hospital Gulp.
that's bad unhealthy drink
Sammmmeeeeeeee
And that's why everything must be done in moderation.
Even drinking water.
@@mikkaMMD hyperventilation?
Even breathing?
@@killinfantsons3193 Hyperventilation is quite bad.
Alsooooo check (your king is in danger)
Well
Too much can hurt
I like how this is the first of these kind of videos on the channel
its insane what so many people DONT call the ER for. my first & only ER call was when i did not stop throwing up (and, once my stomach was empty, violently retching) every 10 minutes for a good 40 minutes... which wasnt at all unbearable (like the head-splitting pain described in the video), but still pretty draining... and worrying, obviously, but nowhere near as worrying as this story
I remember this case, our pharma 101 intro lecture presented this case as “everything is poison if used inappropriately”
I find it interesting how many people learned about this case in school for specific reasons related to different majors.
I learned about it in radio school, for obvious reasons 😐
When I was little I was having a competition with my brother of who could drink more water in a day, I told my mom that and her immediate response was “Don’t do that , drinking too much water can kill you” at first I thought she was exaggerating but now I know why she told me that
U dead or sum
Since your the ultimate life form don't worry though 🙄
I guess normal water would be okay, the problem was that it was distilled in this case
Me and my friend would just fill up our water thermoses at lunch and see who could drink theirs the fastest. It was only 20 oz, so I guess it wasn’t very dangerous.
@@aapfelkuchen No, normal water wouldn’t be okay either. Water in the body is 0.9% sodium chloride. The same thing would happen.
Now this is the first educational video, this is where it starts, like guys look at the previous videos, they were so different. What a changed yt channel.
I've heard this term, hyponatremia, as a warning to hikers at the Grand Canyon.
Hikers are careful to bring a lot of water in the hot, dry conditions, which is good, but if you drink too much too quickly, you can get hyponatremia, and die before you can get help.
This is what the warnings are for.
Woman: Drinks 3 gallons water
Water: Yeah, it's big brain time
Literally!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's hilariously dark
@@its_aj251 yes that indeed was the joke
🤣🤣🤣😂👍🏻

Suggestion: Prophylactically drill a row of holes around the circumference of the skull.
Choose hole size to match desired internal skull pressure whereupon skull-pop will relieve pressure.
-------
A radiologist and/or a cabinetmaker could be consulted to determine the placement and size of holes.
In the event of pressure release, consult a surgeon and/or haberdasher.
Hoard sterile duct tape.
I really enjoy his videos. It makes me think the time spent watching his videos I get a little smatter unlike watching the usual bad driver videos. Thanks for making us a little smarter Doc.
I can't imagine how awful it was for her kids.
All for a stupid free Wii that only costs about $200 even at launch price.
Mwer Keller fr
me to and I wonder how much money she needed to pay it might be over 100k :( I feel bad for her and her husbaned
At least she didn't bleed from the eyes one of my friends overhydrated himself it was terrible
Harry Chu My family can barely pay that much, and I feel like if my parents didn't know how dangerous that is, they would probably do something similar to make us(their kids) be able to have fun. (Or at least my dad, even though irl he and my mom are too smart to do something like that)
You really did your research on this. I thought it was going to be a clickbaity and cheesy story.
Isabela Gatewood same here
Well, he is a doctor, so knowing medical science is his thing.
He has a double degree as a doctor and engineer. Damn he knows a lot
This guy is cool.
nah he's just asian
-and thus, a legend did happen to be born.
With the iconic music too!
Wow this is the first UA-cam video that my wife agreed to watch in which she approved and is intrigued
I feel bad that this mother just wanted a wii to play with her kids with. Imagine going this far to win their favor or impress them. Dont forget to show your mom you appreciate them
Most of the stories in this channel r so sad
Stephanie Smith meh.
Didn't she die in the actual story
SireVivitan Exterminating people for being genetically related to someone who participated in a stupid competition, if this isn't proof eugenics is a mistake I don't know what is.
Stephanie Smith i was adopted at age 2 and idk who my mom is. Wut am i gonna do?
I feel so horrible for her. She wanted to play with her kids. Her kids and husband must feel so bad. I can’t imagine dying like that or having to come with someone you love dying like that.
This story sheds a whole new light on “stay hydrated”
@@mistery1814 She died, it mentions in the description it's a story, in reality she died.
exactly, even there is no risk of dying. Drinking this much water without peeing is inhumane. Whoever designed this competition is a total moron without any common sense.
I don’t feel sorry for the husband, such a laid back asshole. If he took her to the hospital in time, maybe she’d live
Yeah like literally she just wanted to play wii with her kids. Seriously heartbreaking.
I remember when this happened. I was so scared as a kid that i didn’t even want to do the recommended 8 glasses a day thing. Took a while to get over it (had to physically see how much 1 gallon was to snap me out of it).
Emia, meaning presence in blood.
This makes me sad, this story was changed to help students understand how to help rare cases, but the darker reality is the woman actually died six hours after the event in her home. She sadly did not get help in time...
really? The woman died?
@@edarion01 Yeah
Lmao just make her urinate xddd

I haven’t watched one of your videos in a while but I just understood most things because of the ap bio class I’m currently taking. I just did a presentation on ADH a few days ago.
I have learn a whole lot of infomation just by watching this video, thankyou Dr. Bernard
I don't know how you can drink 3 gallons of water without your stomach bursting
Jeff the bot exactly
Read our stomach can hold up to 5L
Fluids never stay in your stomach for very long.
Water goes into the large intestine. That thing can hold a lot of water. Then it is absorbed by it.
Its in 2 hours.
Dang that dinner looks pretty good
Dominic B. Let's first teach you to spell

YOU DORIS?!?!
In the last 10 videos or so there was one thing in common: Vision going dark.
Remember folks: If your vision was okay before and it suddenly goes dark, you should go to the ER.
(this doesn't include shutting your eyes, holding stuff in front of you eyes, going to dark places or the night...)
