Tesla Model 3 Refresh Driving Review - Is It Any Good?!?!

  • Tesla just started shipping the refresh Tesla Model 3 (Project Highland) to stores across the country in an attempt to get Demo models in the hands of customers. This gives consumers a chance to experience the new refreshed Model 3 first hand and place their order for their very own.
As of now, there is a 2-3 month wait to get a new Model 3 in this new refreshed setup. That wait is expected to continue to extend as people start getting a first hand account of the vehicle, both on the body and interior, as well as the way the car drives.
After driving the Tesla Model 3, in this case a Model 3 RWD, I have some immediate thoughts. I have previously owned both a Model 3 SR RWD and a Model 3 LR AWD. Both vehicles were very similar, except for range and acceleration.
This base Model 3 that I drove today was far superior than my previous Tesla Model 3's and comes with a whole suite of new features and updates. Of course there are the obvious things like new bumpers, head lights, tail lights, wheels, etc. but there are also some pretty big updates on the inside.
The refresh Tesla Model 3 now comes with a screen in the back, updated dash, new seats that include cooled seats in the front, stalkless steering wheel, with turn signals on the wheel and shifting on the screen, LED color changing ambient lighting, a new improved suspension for a softer ride, better aerodynamics and wheels and tires for a more efficient ride and new range.
The things that did not change are the overall size, acceleration and price. In fact, Tesla was able to add quite a few new top end features to this new Tesla without increasing prices by using a bit of redesign magic. There are some visual changes that show cheaper materials, such as the dash and center console, but the biggest changes are hidden, in the way the car is made.
Tesla continues to improve their cutting edge body casting capabilities, and the refresh Model 3 is no exception. The new processes underneath the paint help improve production significantly and reduce those costs. This allows Tesla to both reduce cost to produce and also expand margin.
After my demo with this 2024 Tesla Model 3 RWD, I can say confidently that this is a far superior car than its predecessor. The car is smooth, quiet and the materials feel far more solid on the whole. Although there are some things I dont like, such as the center console, dash and lack of fog lights, the improvements and new features far outweigh these less than ideal changes.
The new refreshed Model 3 is sure to be a top selling car, and early indications show that orders are coming in much faster than Tesla can produce, making for extended lead times.

Am I missing something on why people are complaining towards Tesla for shortcomings of the EPA range estimates? It’s EPA stating the range estimates not Tesla. Glad EPA is able to adjust their calculations to match closer to real world numbers.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy I’m not saying you directly. I’ve seen in other posts and videos with people mad at Tesla directly for overstating their range numbers when it’s the EPA coming up with those estimates. I understand the frustration. I just think it’s directed at the wrong group.

@@pk-76 It is sort of an odd thing with the prior Teslas as real world for them were severely worse than EPA estimates. Yes, we can blame the EPA but then we see cars like Taycan that get near or more than EPA and Rivian that seems to be pretty close. Not sure how to explain it but the real world for Tesla especially highway have been horrendous.

I just test drove a new M3LR yesterday. I think the interior is a slight upgrade compared to the current/old M3/MY, which is nice since the price remained the same, but I do agree that the center console covers seem to be a bit cheaper. I feel like they are similar thickness plastics as before, but somehow they felt cheaper to me. The ambient strip on my test car also didn't come particularly close to lining up between the doors and dash. I completely missed the new blind spot indicators. I guess I'm so used to using the blind spot camera that it never occurred to me to look at the new indicator.
The ride was noticeably smoother compared to my 21 MYP. I test drove a 23 MYP last year with the comfort suspension and didn't feel like there was a huge difference, but this one I definitely could feel. Very smooth ride. I still don't care for the turn signal buttons though. I think if I was to get another Tesla, and it will not have turn signal stalks for sure, it would have to be paired with steer by wire. Turn signal buttons paired with normal steering wheel just doesn't make any sense other than to cut costs.
Overall I do think the refreshed M3 is quite nice and a pretty good value. Thanks for the video!

thank you for reviewing a car that was not hand picked by Tesla for review (unlike it was the case with most of the top youtube reviewers).
Our experience about fit and finish of the refresh M3 is IDENTICAL to your review !
We just ended up rejecting delivery of a Highland M3 due to the very same build quality issues you were pointing out (severe misalignment of the led strip between door and dash - door strip sticking out by 1/4"). There was also a paint smudge.
The fact that this actually passed Freemont quality control tells me that unfortunately not much has changed. Freemont remains at the bottom of the barrel in Tesla quality with Shanghai being the best.

Ride is dramatically improved, Sound is dramatically improved, efficiency is somewhat improved, the interior materials are improved and sound deadening in many cases, so quite obviously cost was not the entirety of it. There were big goals across the board. Really difficult decision for model Y enthusiasts Because these updates are so great, but the model Y format is so amazing. We have the Model X, and I have too say that the missing stalks is horrible, after having the car for 5 months I STILL REACH FOR THE TURN SIGNAL Stalk. And I also am NOT A FAN OF THE DISPLAY GEAR SELECTION… uff, put back the stalks… it can’t be that much money.

I can get over the gear selection. The turn signals are hard for me

But is the lack of the tax credit a deal killer? Your losing gear stocks, most people don't have FSD so that will fluster many. The screen in the back and accent lighting is gimmicky at best. The only true positives is the noise reduction in the cabin and ride comfort which I want so bad but I prefer model Y. 3 sits to low for me.

Y is better for me too. Thats why the refresh Y will be very popular

Hold up on that recommendation on the refresh model y - you have no evidence to indicate the model y refresh is coming this year, nor that it will qualify by the time it does come out. If it comes out, and if the battery and drive train is the same, then up it'll be good. If it comes in 2025, there's zero way to tell and if a person needs/wants a model Y now, they should just get it and take the tax credit.
I have no fam and don't need a Y, so I'm getting the new RWD Model 3 tax credit or not.

There is plenty of evidence that the refresh Y is coming in 2024. For the battery qualification, I clearly said "if it does indeed qualify"

When Tesla first came out I thought they were so revolutionary. Now I think having a screen to do. Everything is so ridiculous. Looks like they’re going back to more practical applications.

Also, people suck: they get these cars and take them for a 100% to 0% highway drive. This is fine, for what it is, but people have to realize they are comparing apples to oranges when they do this with EPA numbers. EPA does a five cycle test wherein they weight the highway portion of the drive 45% and the city portion 55%. If someone does a 100% highway drive, also not under EPA test cycle conditions, of course the numbers will be different. They’d have to be. Then they extrapolate their flawed data to say the car doesn’t get EPA range. Duh! Of course it doesn’t, because they aren’t using the right data. It’s not the car’s fault the UA-camr doesn’t take the time to understand and explain the EPA data to the viewer. The range how they do their test is not entirely useless, but it will never meet what they are incorrectly reporting is the EPA standard because it isn’t the standard, they just don’t know they’re doing it wrong. Sigh.

220 wh/mile 75 kwh pack, should get good range in normal everyday use. I can drive constantly in my M Y in the city and get 225 wh/mile, for about 8 hours, continuous, before recharging. It’s more than adequate.

With this all being so new to so many consumers, I think its fair to look at finding a new way to list ranges prominently to include both highway and city range

Its not the slowest Tesla. The rwd model Y is the slowest Tesla.
2023 m3 rwd LFP was rated 272 miles, and real world was really a 250-ish car. So this one must probably be a legit 270-ish real world..
