  • Its here! The 2024 Model 3 Facelift, or "Highland". New lights, new interior, new tech! This is the car which put Tesla into the premier league of car manufacturers, and since it first appeared in 2017 there have been significant changes to the way it is built and to features offered.
    This Highland refresh feels like a new car - its that big a change. I take the car on an evening drive to find out if Tesla have perfected it.

    I just bought a new Tesla and literally NONE of the things people criticize were true. None. Suspension is fine. Wipers work great. Build quality is excellent. And you sit like a King in the Model Y. It's just people with no clue mouthing off.

    Hello Ian - took a similar red M3 RWD out for an extended test drive yesterday and compared it to my 2022 M3 RWD, over the same test route. Agree the suspension is more compliant, cabin noise quieter and the interior superior (although believe the 20/21 revisions where an improvement on the earlier loaner car you had). The new Tesla vision is better but would still like ultra sonic sensors as well.
    Did not notice that the regen modes had been removed - like you normally use creep mode, however, the drive train seems smoother on the new model, with less “on/off” which can be slightly uncomfortable for passengers. Efficiency has improved slightly.
    It’s a cracking car for sub £40k with an everyday winter range of 250+ which with the LFP battery can be charged to 100% every day. The indicator buttons on the steering wheel is the elephant in the room for me. Whilst on my test drive needed to change lane with the steering wheel turned to negotiate a roundabout, and found it impossible to find the indicator button in time. Why not at least put the left and right indicator buttons each side of the steering wheel?
    Look forward to part 2.

    Funny watching your drive as I served at RAF Buchan many years ago and passed through Aberdeen a lot. I picked up my M3LR highland 4 days ago. Loving it but the indicators can be a nuisance for exit signals on roundabouts when the wheel may be upside down 🙃

    • @sunrisejak2709
      @sunrisejak2709 4 місяці тому

      That's odd that the steering wheel would be upside down. The roundabout must be a very very tight radius. The roundabouts I navigate the steering wheel never needs to turn more than 90 degrees. It means my left hand which is on the wheel at the 9 o'clock position the wheel travels to become approximately the 12 o'clock position making access to the turn signal buttons under my left thumb not really a big deal. I have a model 3 (not the highland) but I'm experimenting with the roundabouts and looking where the buttons might be given the curve of the roundabout. Seems to not be upside down but maybe the roundabouts are different. Plus the roundabout direction will always be the same so maybe the left thumb can keep relative position over the left turn signal button.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  4 місяці тому

      I think it’s all about timing. If you’re turning the wheel back with the change of direction the buttons should just come to hand at the right time

    It would interesting to see what you think of the indicators on one of the UK’s many mini roundabouts. Whilst you say you get used them fairly quickly, I still don’t understand why these are better than stalks, except for cost cutting reasons. And remember, you are trying to hit a moving target when using them. How would it be if the main screen was rotating? Daft I know, but just as an example.

    • @tantanman2852
      @tantanman2852 4 місяці тому

      They aren’t better, the primary purpose of no stalks is to save money on the cost of building. They just hope the lack of them doesn’t put people off enough to stop them buying the car.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  4 місяці тому +1

      You only indicate once on a mini roundabout so it’s no different. As for why they have done it, people say “cost”. Is it? Dials up the techno fear of the people who are skeptics, likely to lose them some sales…

    • @bobuk5722
      @bobuk5722 4 місяці тому

      @@justgetateslaHi, UK Highway code rule 188 - treat mini roundabouts like any other - there is usually more than one practical exit. The HC recommends not doing U turns on minis. Where I am we have some 'Granny Knot' double minis and they are interesting at the best of times, I think on these you would find the steering wheel in some odd positions. Tesla could alleviate this perceived challenge with some voice commands. Obviously not so much of a problem if navigating using SatNav unless aborting the selected route. Otherwise, on big RBs I agree, it's a non-problem.

Looking forward to the next video of your review. So far we share experience. It's a really fantastic car. I don't miss the ride quality or quietness of my XC 60 at all. Having owned mostly cars from the so called traditional "premium" German brands and also having no prior experience with Tesla, I was very pleasantly surprised when I test drove the new Model 3 last week. Refined overall ride, nice sound insulation, comfortable suspension setup yet with adequate feedback and a spectacularly smooth power delivery despite being a small rocket. I was so impressed in fact, that I ended up ordering a LR one in that lovely ultra red for which I am super excited. However, I believe the stalk situation is just silly, especially in European countries with tight roundabouts... I hope to be able to adjust, but will for sure be keeping an eye on the stalk retrofits that are already being developed for this iteration of the M3.

    The problem with stalks is the lack of standardization. At one time I had 3 cars. "mine, my wife's, and a family car". The stalks were all different functions. The right hand stalk was: a gear selector, a wiper control, and turn signals. Muscle memory was useless. After driving my Tesla with the stalk geing a gear selector I jump into my Volvo and immediately flip on the wipers when I want to pull down for drive. And having driven the one with the right stalk being turn signals and I jump back into the Tesla I think I'm flipping the turn signal but actually I3trying to throw it into reverse. Maddening! 😳 Get rid of stalks as the manufacturers follow no standards! Plus the function of the wiper stalk for example can be up and down or rotational. Same with the turn signal stalk some have the lights built-in and with Tesla you activate cruise control with the gear selector! Plus because the stalks are "hidden" by the steering wheel it's not readily seen what setting might be such as wipers set to off or intermittent etc. This chaotic use of the stalks is sheer lunacy. NO STALKS. Next thing you know some manufacturer will swap the accelerator and brake pedal just because they can! 🤣 Multiple car owners can be put at a disadvantage with this lack of standardization.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  4 місяці тому

      That’s all true! Did people endlessly complain about Mercedes and the single stalk? I suppose we could have UK standards for vehicles, but that just would add cost and complexity to the UK market which if manufacturers had diverged from our rules mean they just don’t bother with us.

    Great review. We were impressed on our test drive of the Highland SR also. But the removal of indicator stalks is a mistake. End of. It is not the end of the world, nor a deal breaker but is yet another annoyance to get used to (such as EVERYTHING being controlled by the touch screen). In most cases, and especially on a motorway drive ,the indicator buttons on the wheel work just fine. But in city scapes and roundabouts, the fact they are constantly moving is a nothing but an irritation. Brainless tweaking and cost cutting by Tesla to add to the removal of US park sensors for Tesla Vision etc. Rest of the car, ride, refinement etc all very good though. Which is why things like this are so irritating. No Apple Car Play etc. No V2L. No HUD.

      Everyone claims these are cost cutting. I’m not so sure. There is a design ethos being pursued. Removing sensors to go to cameras only makes sense when you are developing a camera-based AI. It’s not about cutting a small amount of cost.
      As for the lack of stalks, the drive swipe on the screen is better than the stalk, as is autopilot. Indicators? I found there is less reach than the stalk

      Morning! You see how this channel is "Just Get A Tesla? - Thinking about switching your fossil fuel car to an EV?" ? The clue is in the name. Also, see the videos I have done pointing out all the flaws on my Tesla. Biased people don't attack the brand and the product.
      Looking at your last sentence I infer that you dislike EVs because reasons. Your reasons will of course be right as I am "biased" saying something you disagree with. Question - if you are so right, and you know in your gut you are right, why are you here seeking positive reinforcement? I know the Earth is round, but I don't need to go watch Earth Is Flat videos and argue with them to back my views up...

      @@justgetatesla - Its a good job you know the earth is round. Whew, that would have been a big one to get you to understand...lol.
      Ok with that joke out the way, nets get serious - Look do not think I am against EV's. My next Car will be an EV and likely a TESLA as they have the best charging network. and have the best battery conditioning system for extreme battery weather.
      I do not believe EV's are better or inferior. Both have positives and negatives. EV like TESLA have been built from the ground upwards, and not backwards/ retro EV cars as they call some of them.
      I like the TESLA brand as it has great tech as you keep singing about. But you need to put a little balanced view on your video's, Like weather issues, degradation, Poor Tesla customer support, EV's being very very very expensive and batteries will need to be replaced should you keep an old one beyond 8 or 10 yrs at probably more than the cost of the EV value that that time. Further the range claims on TELSA's are a joke, I know why....because they have to use the power to keep the battery in good condition by heating or colling it even if it is parked up hence phantom battery drain.
      I know these things and you know I am right, but you failed to mention the obvious issues. This is a real problem as newbee's to EV's will listen to you buy a TESLA and than sell it on after a year of truly understanding how EV;s work. This is counter to promoting EV's as these people will shout the loudest about how bad a tesla is. Hence self defiting.
      My comment was ment to be constructive, Yes do tell use about the good things, but please inject a little reality into your reviews of what it means to own a tesla.
      So, before I end this comment, let me say I like your video's, and I am knowledgeable on EV's hence can see through some of the things you tell us. I will watch bad review of TESLA's / EV's also and tell them so in the comments, just like your Rosey view you are painting. Its what I do, and it helps you in upping your view profile stats these comments. Peace Man

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  4 місяці тому

      Peace indeed! Can we discuss a few of your points?
      Weather issues - what issues? Cars work fine in -29c as Byorn Nyland shows on his channel
      Degradation- providing you operate the battery as recommended there is no degradation to cause a problem. And there’s a long battery warranty if any issues
      Poor customer service. - not in my experience. It’s been excellent.
      Replacement battery need - there really isn’t. This is the worst of the FUD put around. There are old cars out there on old chemistry and the battery still works. Some have needed a new battery, sure. I had a car that needed a new engine.
      Range claims - no worse than any other mpg claim. And many of us get great range / efficiency as my videos show.
      Phantom battery drain - I’ve heard of it but haven’t experienced it. If what you stated about the battery is true then I would have had it, no?
      I call what I see. Many many videos with issues on my car. But real issues, not FUD “issues” which are the ones you have listed. You say “inject reality” as if I make this up to sell the car in a positive light. My best performing videos have been where the car failed - lived reality. I can’t talk up phantom drain or poor service or any of those other things. They may be what you read but they aren’t what I experience in reality.

I suspect Hirts car hire are selling off their stock for other reasons? They claim low value retention and high insurance.
      Any case, I note what you say and will verify with other information. All that said, my next car might be a EV. Fancy the Model X with fee supercharging. I might find one that is at a price I wish to spend.

      Hertz? They had a deal with Uber. Whose drivers then trashed the cars. Hence the higher than expected costs. These weren’t standard hire vehicles, they ended the contract, they’re selling the cars. All was public knowledge! But the media agenda wants to trash EVs so doesn’t report it. This is the problem with FUD.
