      So true. Also, complaining that the bass follows the guitars is ridiculous. This is what the bass does for 95% of metal. What Cliff also did most of the time, what Rob does, and what Jason continued to do.

    • @czolgistta
      @czolgistta 13 днів тому +7

      @@Maggai precisely! The bass has to amplify the guitar riff and make it heavier. Besides most of Metallica songs are easy in terms of how they are built. In Megadeth Dave Ellefson does a lot of moves around the riff but that is because he has the space in the frantic riff construction of the songs. Metallica doesnt have that so best when the bass follows the main riff and serves the song.

      Honestly, I think James was just wanting to put in more space in the riff, the temptation sometimes is to overplay and fill in all the spaces. More space can improve the groove and funk of a song. And of course James was writing most of the riffs, so they were his. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a jerk lol. I just think he happened to be right here.

    Saying the bass playing the guitar part muddies it up is a weak excuse. Nearly all the great metal albums have the bass following the guitar riff for the most part, Cliff Burton as an example followed the guitar riffs nearly all the time during typical Metallica songs. It only muddies the sound if its mixed horribly and thats probably down to the other band members, lets be honest Cliffs playing shouldve been a lot more audible.
    Bass following the same riff as the guitar should add a ton of power to it to the point where you wouldnt want to listen to it without bass.
    People still think AJFA guitar tone has too much bass, it doesnt need any bass, its the scooped mids that make it heavy. If you have a scooped mids guitar tone like a lot of death metal bands have you match it up with a bass guitar that has a lot of mids and it sounds awesome because both instruments are filling the areas of sound where the other isnt.
    The problem with AJFA sound was the guitar still used frequencies that gave honky mids and these bad frequencies became more audible when the bass was louder as the blend was amplifying it despite the bass on its own sounding great. Turn up AJFA on a record player and turn the bass up and youll hear a dreadful honky sound come through like wub wub wub thats not the bass guitar, thats the part of James guitar sound that the producer couldnt convince him to cut out despite it being basically inaudible when James was playing it, cutting that frequency wouldnt have changed his sound at all. Adding bass eq to his sound wouldve made it obvious that he still had a honky frequency and that part of it that clashed with the bass sounded dreadful.
    Bass frequencies on a guitar are still very much in the midrange, theres a band of frequencies in the midrange that produce a honky sound, usually most bands cut this out of their sound , James guitar sound was scooped mids but it wasnt scooped enough. THATS they key.
    If a really heavy band uses actual bass frequencies compared to an E standard tuned guitar then the simple method is to allow the bass to be midrange and punchy rather than boomy. Jasons tone is AWESOME. Too often tone is taken based on how it sounds on its own rather than how it sounds in the mix and this is where James made a bunch of production mistakes
    AJFA and MOP had by far the best guitar sound of any metallica album by MILES, James was right to go for that sound and not want to change it, he just needed someone to communicate to him how to cut a tiny amount of honk.
    Nowadays James plays a godawful midrange heavy sound that has the gain dialled in around 5, its weak and it doesnt even sound like metal anymore.

    Amazing Jason stayed on for another couple albums. If it were me, I personally would have deleted both of them and then locked up in Rikers, after the trial. As a consolation, you all would have been spared Load and Reload.

    The more you learn about how they treated Jason the more douche you realize the entire band was. "Let's work on a sound that will match this acoustic guitar" that IS NOT heard in the entire album. D-bag kings.
