Kitchen Bouquet and Gravy Master are two commercially available equivalents to your Gravy Browning. They are widely available here in the USA…

My grandmother (she would be 122, born in 1902) used to make it almost the same way except hers were salty and almost white as opposed to sweet & dark.
Just a little molasses, brown sugar, dry mustard (just a bit) , a little oil at the very beginning on the beans, this way they stay whole more and like you : onions, fatback (with a little meat if possible) & water, salt & pepper.
When it gets colder, I will definitely make some!

The salt pork puts a rich salty flavor. We grew up using salt pork, but now it seems to be overpowering at times, I'm just not used to it anymore. We freeze our baked beans too and use them as a side dish for other meals. I will also take some of the beans from the freeze in winter when I'm having a cookup in the woods. We vaccine packs the beans in small portions. It holds up very well.

Enjoyed this, but I have a question. You mentioned that the native people also made this. Did they use maple syrup for the sweetener? It's all that I can imagine.....Thanks

Yes they did. Wikipedia - Baked beans occurred in Native American cuisine, and are made from beans indigenous to the Americas.[3] It is thought that the dish was adopted and adapted by English colonists in New England in the 17th century and, through cookbooks published in the 19th century, spread to other regions of the United States and into Canada.[3] However, the connection to Native American cuisine may be apocryphal, as legumes such as broad beans and lentils prepared in various sauces had been established in European cuisine long before the Middle Ages. Today, in the New England region of the United States, a variety of indigenous legumes are used in restaurants or in the home, such as Jacob's cattle, soldier beans, yellow-eyed beans, and navy beans (also known as native beans).[3]
Originally, Native Americans sweetened baked beans with maple syrup, a tradition some recipes still follow, but some English colonists used brown sugar beginning in the 17th century. In the 18th century, the convention of using American-made molasses as a sweetening agent became increasingly popular to avoid British taxes on sugar. Boston baked beans use a sauce prepared with molasses and salt pork, a dish whose popularity has given Boston the nickname "Beantown".[4]

I don't think I've ever done baked beans from a bag, I always get the canned ones. I've got a few tips though, navy, great northern and cannelini. Which do you think would work?

We like making baked beans from scratch, and then we freeze them in containers. When we want some beans, we will take a container from the freezer and let it thaw for a few hours. Today, we're glong on side by side or utv and having a fire and cook-up, we're taking some of the frozen bake beans with us, so this will be an upcoming video.

Hahaha yeah I guess she thought is everyone knew you had to boil the beans but if someone have never made baked beans before its actually the most important step. Your able to make these beans, it's a very simple recipe but a very delicious one. Just add some brown sugar when you mix everything together and half way thought the cooking process just take a taste and add extra ingredients if needed. It actually taste even better the next day.

I don't always boil mine first but if you don't boil them you definately need to soak them overnight

Mom never soaked them, she said her mother never and she always boiled them, maybe that makes a difference to the beans and is another reason my everyone loves moms baked beans.
