Nirvana changed the face of the music industry OVERNIGHT with this song! It went stratospheric and defined a new genre - 'grunge'. I adored them and like everyone else, I was devastated when singer/songwriter/lead guitarist, Kurt Cobain took his own life in 1994 at the peak of their fame. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔

Nirvana wasn't the first grunge sound to emerge from Seattle during that era, but this song hit so hard it blew the doors off the whole scene. Music execs from all over the country were flocking to the pacific northwest to sign anyone they could find with a similar sound who wasn't already under contract. Nirvana influences like Pixies and Melvins are worth checking out too. As is one of my personal favorites The Gits. If it wasn't for the murder of Mia Zapata, The Gits was a perfect vehicle to turn her into the female Kurt Cobain. I love the whole genre. Miss the '90s and that music scene.

Ah The Gits, I haven't heard that in quite a while. My class at the Art Institute of Seattle in 92/93 promoted and produced a show featuring The Gits at Rockcandy. They were a lot of fun to watch. A real tragedy with respect to what happened to Mia Zapata.
Long haired old hippies were collecting farts in jars. Anything to hold onto those moments, to capitalize on that scene. It was a wild time. A good whiff and I’m right back then and there.
When this video debuted on MTV it literally changed the musical landscape overnight. There was a documentary series about15 years or so ago about albums that changed music. They did an episode on Nevermind, the album this song is from and I remember them interviewing members of other bands that were popular at the time. I don't remember which band it was but the was a hair metal band who said after they heard Smells Like Teen Spirit they looked at each other and said "What the f**k are we going to do now??". Lol
As a die hard metal teen, and not hair metal, I'm talking Exodus, Slayer, Napalm death, even I had to do a double take when I heard this. You just couldn't deny the brilliance of it. In a way they were more metal than metal because the whole identity of metal was being outside of the mainstream, yet they all followed the non-mainstream cookie cutter pattern. And here comes Nirvana, like nothing before, truly not giving a crap and sounding so great.

When this was released, it hit GenX like a lightning bolt - it was one of those moments in time where everyone remembers exactly where they were when they first heard it.
Smells Like Nirvana by Weird Al. He asked Kurt if he could parody this song and Kurt was worried it would be another "food" song like "Eat it" and "I love Rocky Road" and Al told him it would be about how no one could understand the words of this song. Kurt's response was, "Yeah, that makes sense."

Love this reaction! This song and album changed the face of rock music forever. Stripped down and raw was in, and big hair and make-up said 'sayonara.' The grunge bands spoke openly about things like alienation and depression and that raw sincerity struck a bigtime chord with Gen-X and younger Boomers, alike. ✌
Rock peaked in the 60’s and 70’s with a incredible amount of talent unleashed. The 80’s were a down time, some good artists, but all told it was blahhh. Along came these guys, plus other Grunge bands, an infused new life into rock. Sadly, it was the last gasp. Rock is dead.
@@GregCombs100 the 80’s had some great music as a whole. There were some great bands and musicians across the board. It wasn’t all hair metal and Bon Jovi. No disrespect to either. It’s just that nothing blew the roof so to speak until grunge came along... or Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit/Nevermind to bring the attention to Washington State.
RIP Kurt, a great song and if it hasn't been said one of the girls he shared a room with wrote on the wall "Kurt smells like teen spirit" which were he got the inspiration for the song
I was in college when Nirvana hit the scene. They got huge immediately because of their unique sound at that time. When one of their songs came on in the club, the place completely erupted. Lots of great memories.

This song takes me back. The grunge era was the soundtrack of my high school years. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Soul Asylum. Funny story Weird Al Yankovic did one of his parodies to this song called Smells Like Nirvana and people asked Kurt what he thought and Kurt told them you know you’ve made it when Weird Al calls you to ask if he can make a parody to your song. The only artist to truly never give their permission was Michael Jackson. Weird Al is a freaking legend.
I'm going to have to disagree with you about it being Michael Jackson. In an interview with Jay Leno, Weird Al said that it was Prince who turned him down.

Saw them live in Seattle.. about a month before. A year later I attended a wedding who's yard overlooked Cobain's back yard and the garage.
I still remember living in Tacoma during the grunge phase and always wearing my flannel jacket with the pack of Camels in the pocket. Nirvana, Sound Garden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees...so good.

Good song - so did you know that the drummer for Nirvana, Dave Grohl, is the lead singer and guitarist for Foo Fighters? He formed that band BY HIMSELF after Kurt died. For FF'ers first album, he not only wrote all of the lyrics and sang every song, he also wrote the music for every instrument, played and recorded them all. Of course now now he has Taylor Hawkins on drums and the rest of the band, but for that first album it was all him. That's talent
You can't forget Pat Smear also being part of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters.

A massive influence on the music scene when they hit. I was in my 30's at that stage, not a teen anymore, but they still grabbed me.
A big influence on three 15y old kids here in Australia that formed a band called Silverchair. Please check out one of their songs from their first album "Frogstomp". 'Pure Massacre' would be a good one to start with.
This is where the grunge movement started for me, I was 16 when I heard it the first time. Went on to get into Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc. ✌️❤️🎸

This music is as awe inspiring as the first time I heard it. I was really down on music at the time and people at the store I was working at telling me that I need to hear this new song. Of course I was cynical knowing their taste. Coincidently, within a couple of days of people try to convince me I went to a little pizza place to get a single slice. They had a jukebox and saw the song listed. I tried it out and my mind was blown! I am a rock ‘n’ roll snob. Nearly every song that eventually became my favorite eventually became the classic songs still loved today. Ironically, when I loved them Back then they weren’t accepted by the mainstream. In other words, they weren’t top 40 songs. I was an AC/DC fanatic before most people were even conscious of them, for example. On top of all that, RR you are phenomenal and I love your open mind and sensitive Spirit!

I actually heard Yankovics B4 I heard Nirvana. So I consider Nirvana as doing a cover of Yankovic!😁 And TBH I prefer Yankovics version in that I can actually hear the words being sung. Just not a Grunge fan. The Beatles Forever!!!😁 😁 😁
That "yodel" thing is called a vocal cry, as in crying. It's a common way of emoting when singing. I think it might originate in country music - Def Leppard producer and country afficionado Robert John "Mutt" Lange used to coax lead singer Joe Elliott with the words "You've gotta appeal to the chicks, man". At any rate, country has more than its fair share of vocal cries... :)

I had the privilege of experiencing Nirvana in Brisbane on their ONLY Australian tour in the early 1990s as a SUPPORT for the Violent Femmes!!! I was blessed to have seen two such wonderful 3-piece bands on the same stage.
That's for me the most emblematic song by Nirvana...
there is alot of things in this video thats cool, for instance the crowds are fans he invited, the janitor is acctully working at the school, and they just asked him if he could in the video.
Now, please consider doing Hole's song "Violet" --- people hate on Courtney Love, but her voice and presence in that era are just as iconic and powerful as Cobain's

its crazy cause watching you dancing this music its of course pop vibe too like this song essence its like you fresh stylists teen souls music.. like very rebellious, timeless...like the very distorted guitar sound and the dancing beat this song also has, the the beautiful aestethic youngster melodies with are on many songs from them, are a modern rock and now a classic, won't let the track comes old and heavy to ears with can probably happen if you're not paying attention to the vibes and possibly you'll miss the avant garde. cheers Rogue!
I remember watching this video and seeing them roll the lyrics in a scrolling banner at the bottom. It was the only video I've ever seen them do this for. The people at MTV likely didn't know what he was saying either. The exciting thing to me is how a song finds its way into your soul and resides there forever. This is one of those songs, just like Elvis' live version of "My Way". Nirvana was the explosion that opened up Grunge to the world. Pearl Jam had their hits, as did Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Mud Honey, Harvey Danger, etc, but none of them hit the scene with a slap so hard that everyone had to stop and take notice as Nirvana with Smells Like Teen Spirit. That's why they had to scroll the lyrics at the bottom of the screen. All the "straights" had to see what all the buzz was about. None of the other bands left-hooked the industry like this one song did. No one saw it coming.
The drummer for Nirvana is Dave Grohl-who is now the lead singer/guitarist for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee band The Foo Fighters!!!

Teen Spirit was a name of a deodorant.
Kathleen Hanna, singer of Bikini Kill, wrote Smells Like Teen Spirit as graffitti on a wall.
After the breakup of Nirvana, 1 Dave Grohl founded The Foo Fighters 2 the producer Butch Vig founded Garbage.

This is when rock changed. Out went the hair bands and in came grundge. I personally loved it, made me as happy as the day we killed disco.It goes with what David Gilmore said. It's not about the amount of notes you play it's how you play a note. Hair metal was glitz, glam and no heart.

It's funny you think that somehow disco died, and moreover that you had something to do with it! Dance music has always been around, and always will, whether you like it or not. And Nirvana was nowhere near the leading edge of the shift away from hair metal, but it was when mainstream radio caught on.

I had tickets to see them in Cardiff in march 1994, but he overdosed on the plane so it was reschooled for April 5th - but he or Courtney Love blew his head off. No Show.
