I was 17 when this came out. It changed my life. Gen X was angry. Somewhere deep down we still are.
Amen to the angry Gen X comment about being angry.. I'd say angry and rebellious.. Still thankful to be a gen x chic ✌🤘
We are and we realized early that everybody sucks. Funny to see people worship politicians and actually believe them.
My parents were gen x (dad born 70, mom born 78) and they raised me (21) on this and pretty much everything else they listened to as teens on MTV in the late 80s-90s and now we're all just angsty and angry lmao (except mom, she's dead, dad's still angsty though)

Praise Jah! It thankfully eliminated all those wretched Hairspray Queen bands like Poison, Warrant, Cinderella, etc. So glad to see spandex disappear.

When this song came out, it literally changed the face of music overnight. I don't think any song has ever changed the face of music so quickly as that did. I'm 78, and I can't recall anything prior or after that that did the same thing so fast
You should listen to the whole album, which is called "Nevermind" The whole album is a masterpiece.

@@nelsonx5326 well I really disagree with you. Many 80's "Hair Band, Metal, Glam Rock" whatever you want to call it had songs with soul and meaning. You should check out Iron Maiden you'll find many songs with soul and meaning. Like everything in life Metal ran it's 10 or so years then was replaced by grunge. Before Metal in the 70's there was Disco and Zeppelin. The 60's had Elvis but all had a time then faded. Just life.

This was the song that started Grunge. Before it was 80s Metal bands. This changed music and created a whole new genre. Kurt had stomach problems which is why he sang the way he did. He usually was in pain.
Nope it wasn't. Grunge was started way before that. It gained massive popularity by the time Nirvana released their second album "nevermind".

Nirvana changed my life forever.
This song is my youth. Everyone and everything was about this song. It was played in the hood, to Beverly hills, to my grandmothers house. 😅
I saw Nirvana. I was older. I'm now 68. They had just hit it big with this album. My brother and I went because they were new big Seattle band. They played in a half full Arena. The kids sitting near us were afraid we were cops until we lit up. 😎
When Nirvana hit the stage they were mesmerising. Kurt sang and played great. They basically played the entire Nevermind album. It was a great show like seeing someone as Entertaining as The Who when you knew virtually nothing about them.
Kurt Cobain’s suicide was the most impactful music death since John Lennon. Both geniuses.
I remember the day hearing of his death, i was sitting in class at high school when i was 14, I starting crying in front of the whole class. I picked up my books and walked out of class and ran home to see if it was true. I cried for days. That's how much of an impact Nirvana made on me. Nirvana changed my life. Miss you heaps Kurt
It was more impactful than Lennon's because Cobain was only 27 and had tons of great music left in him, which we never got to hear.
Lennon, all due respect to his legacy, was near 40, and his musical heyday was well past. The 80s music scene to come was miles different than what Lennon had been producing since the Beatles folded. He was just a good memory for Baby Boomers at that point.
I think you mean Freddie Mercury. Died 1991. I can only IMAGINE how people felt especially because the day before he told the papers his time was basically up. Then Kurt, followed by Tupac and then Biggie.
@@billlarussa5908 Pretty sure Lennon was doing successful with Double Fantasy in 1980. He still had plenty left. I don't think either is more impactful but Lennon's death broke a lot of hopes for a Beatles reunion. That impacted a lot of people too.
He did not commit suicide. He was suicided, most probably by his wife, Courtney Love, who has ties to the CIA. He was divorcing her. Check out the documentaries about it. Interestingly, Courtney Love has NEVER sued anybody that claimed that she killed Kurt, which she should have since that would be slander and libel IF it were not true.
As a 90s teen, this is a key part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Yeah basically Kurt Cobain changed the whole landscape of the music industry and the youth culture of the time. From fashion to artwork to style musically to personal beliefs he was always bringing the underground up and that's why it's so easy for anything underground sounding to get famous these days.
Cobain was the last of a line of iconic front men.

SEEING that the song is 30 years old now, chances are good you heard others sample THIS beat, not the other way around. I'm glad you like ot. I WAS A KID WHEN it came out, and still love it in my mid 30s
As in any genre, there are a vast multitude of amazing musical talents throughout the history of rock n roll. There are less rock and roll greats; and even still less rock and roll legends , and further yet, even less rock n roll icons. But what Nirvana did was something the genre had only witnessed twice before (to my knowledge). The first time was with Elvis Presley and the second time was with the Beatles. This makes these three acts rock GODS. While all acts try to find their niche', or claim their spot to somehow fit in the industry, these 3 acts were the mark that the industry itself had to completely transform to be in THEIR niche', in THEIR spot. They were so different and gamechanging, that the entire music industry had to mold around THEM. The industry itself was at first 'always looking for the next Elvis'. They eventually found it in the Beatles. Then they were 'always looking for the next Beatles', then came Nirvana and they weren't looking for the next Beatles anymore, they were all immediately 'looking for the next Nirvana'. Truth be told, there's many more acts that came out of that era that I like WAY more than Nirvana. But Nirvana, and Kurt escpecially, were the MOST rock n roll, out of all those rock gods. Coming from the underground punk scene, Kurt just didn't give a flying F about the industry or what they thought of him. That was his appeal. He didn't bend. He did what he wanted, the way he wanted. And if he couldnt or wouldn't let him, then in typical punk fashion, he'd burn it to the F-in ground. Nirvana is at its core, was always a punk band that merely experimented with rock n roll, not vice versa. And in that punk, "I actually don't give a flying f***" mindset is where Krist, Dave (and eventually, Pat) lived-and where Kurt was king. Watch the video "Nirvana butcher's Smells Like or Teen Spirit on purpose". They blew up in the states first then were doing the promo thing overseas. Went to do a TV show and they told Nirvana they couldn't play their instruments live, that they would have to sing over a prerecorded track. Lol! What you have as a result is one of the most iconic, punk rock moments in music history. And again, as always, Kurt trained them live on TV so no one in the industry would ever try that b.s. again with them. And no one ever did. Absolute rock GOD.

Strange but true: the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (yeah, the one with the famous four opening notes) ends just like this song. Actually, the whole form is similar. There's that catchy motif, and there's sudden switches in volume, there's an instrumental solo in the middle of it (played by the oboe) and then it gathers energy all the way up to the big ending. In Nirvana's song, it's "a denial, a denial, a denial..." again and again, being sung in a furious, angry fashion. With Beethoven, it's maybe even more furious, hitting that same C minor chord over and over again.
Journalists used to point out the similarities between SLTS and Boston's More Than A Feeling. Kurt only knew three cords!! His favorite on Nevermind was Drain You.
I was 22 when I saw the premiere on MTV of this video. Like a bolt of lightning from the heavens, it profoundly changed my perspective on music in an instant. There were others, like smashing pumpkins cherub Rock, Pixies where is my mind, soundgarden, faith no more, catherine wheel, etc., But nothing like this song and their CDs

Damn, the early 90’s were so awesome. People just got sick of androgynous party metal and R&B slanted pop with no substance. This was the result.

Thanks to this band more underground alternative bands ..slowly started playing on mainstream radio!!beforehand earlier in in the 80s all the great underground music was never aired on the radio you’d have to buy it or go to clubs to hear alternative music (RIP Kurt Cobain) Lithium & Bloom are some other great songs from Nirvana

The Seattle rock bands started pouring out of the wood work in the 90’s and what they brought to the music scene was something that the 80’s bands couldn’t! The Seattle rock bands brought a much harder sound and they were writing lyrics that their audience could relate to! It was just that simple but at the same time it was amazing to witness too! The music scene literally changed overnight! One day young people were listening to Twisted Sister and then the world heard Nirvana and then boom 💥

Of course you have heard this before, it was everywhere. This is Seattle Grunge music. The drummer is Dave Grohl who is Foo Fighters today. This is closer to punk than the metal music of Metallica.
All 3 of these guys came from "The Emerald City" which is Seattle. Seattle is the capital of the world for the best grunge music. I myself is a former grunge individual. In the early 90's this song was an anthem to everyone who liked grunge music. People can't like grunge music unless they like this band first. Because this band is and always will be the Godfathers of grunge music...
