  • This video explains the issue of EV chargers located on slopes and inclines. Disabled drivers face a massive challenge to remain independent. EV charging is very difficult only a few charge operators have recognized this and are slowly making improvements. So on behalf of Charge 2 Access I’m auditing EV charge hubs around the UK, to test them and measure them for Accessibility for disabled drivers.

    This made me cry.....I’m a Wheelchair and EV user.....it’s amazing how relatively minor obstacles like a small slope, a curb, a door swinging towards you-scuppered!...roll on wireless charging for cars

      It’s important those that are responsible get the message. It’s difficult for many disabled people to maintain their independence, I’m shocked by how many people say, give the CPOs a break they’re doing their best for the ‘majority’ of us?

      I dont think wireless charging will ever happen as they have a 50% loss so it would take double the power from the grid and cost twice the amount to charge up

      @@112boatman some people say wired charging suffers bigger power losses....who to believe? Maybe wireless charging could be just for people who can't physically access the wired tech, and able-bodied people can use the plugs and cables (so rain/weather shelters needed asap too for umbrella users please like fossil-fuel stations)- there's huge FUD surrounding costs too.....if you charge at home/via a domestic supply, liquid fuel costs over 1000% more....bit like Brexit/almost everything else..50% think one thing, 50% think the complete opposite! We could have special restricted-access chargers with disabled-only signs? Everyone needs/deserves access?

    Good point about the amount of energy it takes out of you before you even set off to the pub, especially when there are gradients and obstacles, even for those blue badges holders who don't have wheelchairs, there needs to be a better alternative.

    • @warnerswheelingabout4879
      @warnerswheelingabout4879  Рік тому

      It’s hard work getting your wheelchair out and doing, a charge and if raining you’d have to get back in the car as well! So you really need reliable amenities close by.

    Oh my gosh Roger! So hard to watch 😢 it’s a sad day to see chargers being so inaccessible 😭

    Honestly it makes you wonder how hard they try to find all these obstacles to put in the way! Who ever thought sticking a charger over a drain ergo on a slope was a good idea should be shot! The number and variety of things likely to be dropped down there doesn't bear thinking about!
    Don't worry Roger I'll have a rant about it, you get your breath back 😅
    I don't know how you remained so outwardly calm after that, bless you for making this study and for really showing exactly what are the problems but please don't do the demonstration at the expense of your health.
    I know your wife was filming you but that must have been hard going for her having to watch you struggle on this one. Excellent job, well done both of you. 👍

      I’m used to struggling I’ve been for 50 years it’s not so much about me. I am concerned. This is a catastrophe in the making where so many elderly and infirm and handicap. People will never be able to have their own EV car with independence.

      @@warnerswheelingabout4879 yes you're absolutely right. I'm mostly ambulatory disabled with fluctuating levels of ability and even on a good day that slope would have floored me, I'd not have had the strength to manipulate the cable over that grate. It's the "oh well ring this number for help" attitude that gets me too. How can we get designers to understand that independence should be just that for everyone? Unless there is help on hand for everyone equally that is just not good enough. A friend of mine says we all start off "abled" but we are all potentially a breath away from being "disabled" if not from awful accidents like yours then simply by old age, as you say, so we all should contribute to putting this right ...now!
      I hope your series of videos has sufficient impact to provide understanding of what's required. It's a fantastic effort you're making on behalf of all of us and much appreciated. 👍🙏👏

    Amazing the difference it makes! I’m just imagining if you’d had a failed charge and needed to repeat the process by disconnecting the charger, plugged it back into the station to reset it then get it back to the vehicle, repeat/trouble shoot until issue is fixed.
    I know you focus on fast chargers but since this is a restaurant situation where you might stay for awhile and graze/use opportunistic charging perhaps a two bay type 2 charger/s with a dedicated disabled charging spot and a non-disabled charging spot closer to the building could be a cost effective way to instal another more accessible charger closer to the building. Perhaps even instal a type 2 charger near pre-existing disabled parking if they already exist, or even just an outlet for customers to use if they bring their own cable?

      It’s the rapid charges that the problems usually if you’re charging at home or if you’re using a car park destination charger in the supermarket, you have time and facilities to wait for it but if you’re on a journey to a meeting or a wedding on the other side of the country, you need these reliable accessible rapid charges to be available to keep you on the move. Otherwise you’re in a situation where you can honestly say it’s better and easier and cheaper to use a petrol car.

    Can't believe they would put a charger by a drain never seen that before but I'm sure there are probably other places where its happened will keep my eyes open

      Thanks for watching, maybe a different drain cover might help, but really be better if they used a differnt part of the car park on level ground

      Just thinking about the times I go looking for my keys as u now drive ur car without keys being in the perfect place/ignition switch
      Quite often I put my wallet out & keys end up on floor dont know how much they cost for Hyundia kona & the massive inconvenience

    Just out of interest, I don't suppose you tried either of the other 2 bays, to see if the slope was quite as pronounced for those, too...? 🤔
    Like you said, the grates were only in front of that particular charge point.
    Like someone else has already said, though, it's amazing that even the tiniest of 'obstacles' - which an able-bodied person wouldn't even think about - can make using a wheelchair just so difficult...! 😕

    • @warnerswheelingabout4879
      @warnerswheelingabout4879  Рік тому

      I didn’t but they were also on a gradient. If the site was level it would be a very good if not perfect site. Nothing for mile if you want a toilet and the pub is closed.A long way from the pub as well. As you say a fit able bodied person would have no problems with it. But for me as you saw it was a tough task. I might do better on crutches but the 75kw cable was very heavy so I might still struggle.

    That's was not an easy watch. In Ireland we have even less facilities for people with mobility issues.
    Only Lidl in our area has space between spaces, and it's the most costly to use.
    Im on stick or rollator, only wheelchair or scooter on long distances. I need door fully open to get in or out and have been trapped in the car twice and out of the car once at units, in the bitter cold when other drivers unintentionally blocked my door. And I've only had an EV two months.
    And of course can't start the car with lead attached.
    They claim between 12 and 15% of units are suitable for mobility issues, I've only ever seen two.
    Never seen one with a canopy.
    Most do not have lighting and are in dark corners of car parks.
    On a long journey someone suggested I check areas where I'm likely to need charge on Just Eats online map, as it shows areas that they deem unsafe to travel to! Glad I did.
    In this day and age there is no excuse.

      That’s a good point in this day and age there is no excuse for these companies to operate within the law and provide equal access to all above profit. But these facilities are not Police. It’s left to individuals like you and I to take legal action and they know really well but they can fend you off. Mark my words, this problem is going to grow and grow, and it will eventually be so serious that many disabled people will be left with public transport or stay at home
