There is no problem when you have a van with a giant backdoor or a giant side door but let's do this with a real car and chair. At the very least start with the most common car and the most common chair at the very very least. There's a reason there's 3.4 thousand views and less than two hundred likes to this video.
Just wanted to make sure I said thanks for this video. I live alone and am looking into part time wheelchair use. This is a question I kept getting stuck on.
I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user and it has enriched my life. I bought a 24 pound wheelchair on Amazon on payments. I've got a burst L5 unfixable... ❤
I use the wheels of EVERY device: mobility scooters, walkers, knee scooters, wheelchairs. And the side of my Toyota Sienna is much lower than back of van due to seat fold down compartment. I also use those back row seatbelts to hold devices in place
Im a BKA Below knee amputee and I have to drive so in my Pacifica van I get in the drivers seat then step out on my good leg, lean on the side pillar and lift the heavy wheelchair like the one you use and lift it into the rear side door of the van all while trying not to fall! I lean as far back to the driver's seat as I can..only a temporary problem or chore to do until I get a prosthetic leg.. I still will drive with my left foot..My left arm has become very strong after all this lifting to just go down to the a&p or Piggly Wiggly!
This is how I loaded and unloaded my mother's wheelchair many years ago. Now I need a chair and I'm looking at the Travel Buggy City 2. Is there a no lift way to get this in my SUV. I I already have compression fractures in my back and I'm susceptible to more.
Just bought a 24 inch wheelchair for my father and got it out of the back of an RX 350 but could not put it in. Some 70 year old man smoking Marlboro reds and drinking a Miller High Life in the doctors parking lot bowed up on it and got in in for me. I don’t have a lip to grab front wheels or handles as I’ve also seen it done. Surely there’s some aid??
Thank you, Theresa G! I hope you're able to help out whoever is needing help with the chair by protecting yourself in the process :) I appreciate your feedback.
That's a great question, Meri. The puzzle with getting the rollators into the car is due to it "opening up" when trying to put it in. Sometimes people get some velcro and strap it around the walker to keep it shut. Some even use zip ties and just keep some scissors in the car for those times. It's still a pain though, especially depending on the height of the car. I'll see if I can do a future video about rollators into the car. Thanks for the suggestion
I am confused, how heavy are the wheelchairs in your country? I have an adult sized wheelchair fitted for my 5'10" height, self propelling, armrests designed to unlock and lift up for side transfer and an extra seat cushion. Yet it not only easily folds up so that even my mother is her 80s can do it, it is light weight and and a matter of moments to put in a car boot. [EDIT]: Also my bathchair that is a ridged non-folding frame is still pretty light to pick up and carry, and that is also self-propelling with removable armrests.
pheobe, typically, yes. It's meant for someone else to help transport the person in the chair. However, there are also many people who use the transport chairs and just "chair walk" around pulling themselves forward. However, it can be super dangerous if someone pushes themselves backward to move in it because the chair is so light weight. I talk briefly and demonstrate why that's the case in my other transport chair video here: ua-cam.com/video/Zvc2BZSkkOI/v-deo.html I hope that helps and stay safe! Great question.
I'll try to put that into a future video. The wheelchair will definitely be more tough depending on the height of the SUV. If it's possible, sometimes if you tilt the chair backward, the front wheels can go up to the trunk. If not, sometimes the passenger doors are a bit lower and the chair can slide behind the front seats. This is typically what is recommended for the rollators as well. A quick help with the rollators is using a zip tie to keep it "closed" so it doesn't unfold. Just remember to keep some zip ties in the car and a pair of scissors if you go that route. An even easier route is using some velcro straps that keep it cinched shut. Thanks for your suggestion.
I've been using that method for 12 years I have a bad back and a manual wheelchair and that was the only way I can get it in the van now I have a truck and that method doesn't work
Hi Ellen, the transport chair that I like for most people is found on Amazon - which is nice, because it can come right to the house. The link is in the description but it can be found at any Durable Medical Equipment place locally. Walmart and some pharmacies also have various types of transport chairs as well. I hope that helps? 😊
Now show us how to put in and take out a large adult size wheelchair into a Trunk please

I would also like to see a video about getting a wheelchair into a car trunk and NOT a van.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see what I can do.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for doing this video.
Lyn, thank you for your encouragement. Stay safe

Could we try lifting a bariatric w/c into the trunk of a Scion XA? Thanks
Useful hints
Easy to fit in a van. Try putting it in and out of a hatchback!
Thank you, another great video!!
How about showing how to get a lightweight motorized wheelchair that folds front to back into an SUV back. Thank you!

Hw about a wide rollater walker???

Try to lift a scooter that weighs 20 kilos
The first step is buying an SUV. Why didn't I think of that?
No disrespect Doc but that is a van with side door. I have a four door car and the rear doors do not open to 90 degrees.
Thst transport chair has to be pushed by a person behind the chair, right?

How about an SUV that's a little higher than a van and you have to lay the wheelchair down?
Also a rollator. I have both.
I'll try to put that into a future video. The wheelchair will definitely be more tough depending on the height of the SUV. How about a power wheelchair? Roughly 50#
I've been using that method for 12 years I have a bad back and a manual wheelchair and that was the only way I can get it in the van now I have a truck and that method doesn't work

How About a four doors sedan, like a nissan persia, twenty twenty
Would you show a woman doing this? I am 76 and must do this with a 35# w/chair for my husband.
It's only easy if you have a vehicle like that!
You show a van. What about a car trunk. Not everyone had a van
