  • I swap my new Mini EV For a second and diesel BMW 320 DGT. I can no longer manage the public charging infrastructure which is not accessible to disable drivers. I’m not ready for electric cars and maybe I will return in a few years when I can afford a Tesla
In the meantime, this is an update about my cars, maintenance upgrades, and one car off to the USA.
Disabled drivers face a massive challenge to remain independent. EV charging is very difficult only a few charge operators have recognized this and are slowly making improvements. So on behalf of Charge 2 Access I’m auditing EV charge hubs around the UK, to test them and measure them for Accessibility for disabled drivers.

I recently had a conversation with my father about this issue. He is disabled and I said that knowing his mobility issues, the accessibility issues with public charging would make it almost impossible for him. Currently I think that people with large vans or towing trailers would also experience problems. With the clock ticking down it is truly amazing how little thought is going into the new public chargers.

It really is a reckless roll out of something so important and supposedly hi tech? It’s unusual by so many people

Although sad to hear, given the major problems with accessibility at most charge points (and definitely it is worse with certain providers) I am not surprised you have swapped over. Hopefully with time, the infrastructure will (and should) get better accessibility and we'll see you again in an EV.
    Happy travels!

Thanks for your comment and understanding, it really is a problem for many disabled people especially those that don’t have off street parking and home charging, this is not being dealt with despite all the conversation surrounding it, I can conform from personal experience it’s not getting better quick enough.

Good for you. As soon as my PCPs up on my EV, I will be changing for a hybrid, its turned out a nightmare with changing. Like you, no home charger

Mate well done a great decision you can’t charge 12 times for 900 miles

Yes I didn’t realise before I committed to an EV just how much physical work was involved in charging, unless you have a private drive and a wall charger it’s also a lot of time you can’t drive the car while it’s plugged in

I think a lot of people will enjoy EV ownership but they need to acknowledge that’s is not ideal for everyone instead of saying we are wrong

I thought the same as a disabled driver .

This technology is definitely not designed for disabled people, the cars perhaps,. I found it very easy to drive, especially with the regenerative, breaking the charging infrastructure, makes it so difficult.

Being able bodied and having an EV since 2017 I must admit I never gave disabled access a second thought till a couple of years ago. If I charge at a public charger I do now look at how I would approach it if I had a disability. This needs addressing and fast. I met you at one of our meetings for the Yorkshire EV club. I wish you all the best and I hope at sometime in the future you return to an EV. I'm organising around November time a meeting at Tesla Sheffield if you would like to attend and try a few test drives out then your welcome.

The sad thing i have found is motability is pushing EVs like mad on everyone!! We did not have a choice tbh with them, as our car was 4k initial payment for EV, or we would have had to pay 8k for the same cas as a diesel. They are basically forcing you to chose an ev, without making it look like they are forcing uou to have a EV. Then at their motability event, they made out it was so quick and easy to charge your EV. Not once did they mention there are basically no disabled bays for public EV bays. Weve had the car now for a few months, and there have been many times the bays were so close, i could not even get out the car once in the bay to even attempt a charge. The other times, i had to leave the wheelchair and use crutches otherwise i would not be able to charge. The public charge network is wholly inadequate for disabled drivers wanting to charge. I saw a video the other day of gridserves new site. And asked the question to them on how many of the 12 bays will be for disabled drivers. Not a single one!! So its not going to get better anytime soon either by the looks of it. If we didnt have a home charger, i would have given the car back after the first 2 months tbh.

You’re enjoying the same experience I had, you can cancel your lease if it’s a real issue that’s making it difficult for you. This is very early days in this transition process,, and I predict it’s going to be much worse as time goes on because there’s no oversight No enforcement of the Equalities Act 2010 or the BSI standards, it’s all political.

you need a home charger for sure granny charging just takes to long, you need a car like the kona 64 kwh battery so you could travel 130 miles & still have enough to get home without even visiting a public charger also makes these trips very cheap if you can do most of your Journeys without public charging rates of 79p kwh sometimes on our road trips i make it if not some times i have to just put a bit in to just get me home
Well hope its not to long till you get another ev

Yes I’ve learnt home charger is crucial plus more range and better access at public chargers let’s see how things develop

What an embarrassment. Why do wheelchair users get overlooked so often in 2024; it’s beyond the pale.

It’s in contravention to The Equalities Act 2010. Also BSI pas1899 sets specification for access to public EV chargers standards for CPOs but it’s only advisory, not mandatory, so is largely ignored. It’s a disgrace and will condemn the discriminated disabled to loose their independence and the ability to drive solo.
