    Part of the reason why sunglasses are so expensive is that there is a near monopoly in the world in the form of Italian company Luxottica. I personally find this companies like American Optical and these others like this one. I have both non polarized for ease in use with LCD screens (polarized can sometimes block) and a couple of decent polarized. There are still some companies that have not been bought by all consuming Luxottica but that company now has many of the earlier independent brands (Ray Ban, Persol, Arnette, Oakley) and the licensed names like Versace, Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Coach and Prada. The company runs Sunglass Hut and provides much of the frames found in optometry offices. This kind of thing lessens competition and makes it harder to find quality goods at free market prices.

    Luke, the scam with sunglasses is that the're all polycarbonate, plastics etc. No glass whatsoever,
    Plastic is dirt cheap. The software available to design these shades make it a breeze, Manufacturing costs are DIRT CHEAP. (Like sneakers.)
    That's why I can't bring myself to dish out $150, $200 on plastic.....

    While this is good, One of the biggest cons I see are the beeds.
    These beeds could cause a serious accident in the rare eventuality of a hiker hitting the back of his head on something.
    Your reviews are always good.
    Can you request the company to change the beeds to flat clasps?
    Atb,
    The Solo Hiker....

    • @thepropolys
      @thepropolys 3 роки тому +3

      How would these beads cause a serious accident? You'd have to hit your head with great force on a very hard object... I think the beads would be of little worry at that point.

    • @The_Solo_Hiker
      @The_Solo_Hiker 3 роки тому +1

      @@thepropolys Okay, let me explain that. The beed is ball shaped. Hence, in the rare occasion of a person slipping and hitting the back of his head while walking on slippery moss lined wet rocks (like near waterfalls) or while coming down hill on dry barren ground that has scree (gravel) on it, the presence of a ball shaped structure can cause more injury to the back of the skull than if he just hit his head.
      Try this, take a flat stone and press it to the back of the head. Now stick a marble on that flat stone, and press the stone with the marble on the head. Which one do you think would be more dangerous?.
      Hope I have been able to solve your query.
      Thanks for taking the time out to read my comment.

      @@The_Solo_Hiker It appears to me that these beads are made out of polymer or perhaps wood. Not glass. I honestly can't imagine it being more "dangerous." Maybe you would get a bruise where you otherwise wouldn't if you smacked your head in just the right way.

    If you need NIOSH rated safety goggles/glasses, I pick up the Bobster goggles for about $8 at LAPG. They're great when shooting suppressed rifles that have a gas blowback problem, they have an elastic band/strap so they fit just fine under your ear-pro (because there's always someone shooting that 12" .308 with the monster brake on it) a few positions down. In general, for something like this, I want it to be closer to my head/face and provide some wrap-around protection. Wearing glasses like this actually kinda sucks, which is why most of us where regular glasses that have arms.

    Everyone has their price limit on everything on this earth. Some higher, some lower. Their expectations vary according to taste, budget and utilization. For those that are active in their lives, be it work, outdoor living/recreation or whatnot and do so more than others, these may be just the ticket for them. It is definitely a niche item in a market that is covered in just about every way. A comment was made about how a lanyard accomplishes the same thing. Yes and no. I have had lanyards fail in their task to keep my shades at least around my neck, only to see them fall off the edge of a butte. No human life was lost due to blinding sunlight, but my RayBan's fell to their death a few hundred feet below. We tied off everything so as not to lose gear during operations, regardless of the terrain, weather or visibility. You would like to think that a "sports keeper" for your sunglasses would not require an extra length of 550 cord. If these glasses were somehow to be offered in a "wraparound" style, I too have a sensitivity to light now due to a corneal injury, I would be interested in a pair. I would actually be interested in two pair, the grey lens for daytime and the yellow lens for nighttime. That is an idea. Luke, maybe Ombraz would be so kind as to provide a pair of yellow lens for an honest opinion/review of how well they perform in low light and nighttime environments. Later, Paul.

    Sunglasses, I’ve only paid 20-30 bucks max, ever. Will never pay more, ever. Just put a glasses strap (Croakies) on a cheap pair of sunglasses. It’s kind of amazing at times what people will pay for things that are really basic functional items. I’m not one of those people. Same with watches. I’ll buy aTimex Ironman or Timex Expedition for $35 bucks and wear it for years, then replace the battery, at at times even the band after a few years. I know I’m different, and I know there is a market for expensive sunglasses and watches. But I’m not part of that market. That's an issue for me with conventional frames and I get a lot of glare leaking past from the ground - boulder fields on a bright day, for example. I have a prominent brow and nose with high, shallow cheekbones. I sometimes wear goggles instead when in the mountains as I don't get the ground glare.

    I'll stick with my Bolle safety sunglasses, at £30-40 it's a no brainer for me. I've had mine for years, they've never broken and if they do they're much cheaper to replace. For the beach etc I'll stick with my Diesel's, still cheaper and both are very comfortable. Appreciate the recommendation though.

    Great channel, I really like your style of reviewing gear. Have you ever checked out the Carinthia Observer Plus? I just just bought one and I really love it.

    Watching your new reviews. You don't seem to be wearing these glasses at all the last year and a half. So what's your long-term review?

    Wonder if these could work for mountain biking? The cord seems long enough to reach around a full face helmet.

      Doubt it... I'm guessing they would sit away from your face. you could always test it though with some string and cardboard.

    I'm disappointed with oakley, just one time put them to rest over my head, but I was using hair gel, and the coating started to peel off 😢😞

    If these were like $30, I would think they are an interesting idea and wait for them to come out with a better looking frame. But those look like someone described my grandpa's glasses to a 3d printer over the phone.

    So they are NOT armless :D and come on dude we have been using straps/cords that connect to the end of the arms for decades to keep them safe, it is nothing new :D
