I work in optical myself (I’m a sales associate, but I take pride in being well informed) and I appreciate how informative this video was. Aside from the sales rep, I’ve heard from dozens of a people that Maui’s are the best in the business and with the prices they charge, I would hope so... I sold two pairs for $900 and $700 with prescription this week and I just got my first set as gift today and I can wholeheartedly say there’s a huge difference in the viewing experience from any other sunglasses I’ve worn. I wholeheartedly recommend these guys, especially if you can get away with contacts, as updating your Rx year to year can no doubt be costly.

So an update: I ordered a pair of "Local Kine" grey sunglasses from my eye doctor. DIdn't have the grey in store, but should arrive in about 3-5 business days. Can't wait to get them and share my impressions.

Thanks for that overlay of lenses! Don't think anyone has done that before. Wish you had bronze to compare it too. But it's all good. Not a fan of blue or red lenses myself.
Please do a video on Serengeti. I've been using green tint Serengeti for almost 5 years until I broke the springy hinge. It was either MJ or Serengeti but I chose the latter because I still want the photochromic ability. I am sensitive to light. The green tint is actually great when I'm driving from bright outdoors into an underground car park. With my old shades I had to take them off.
What are your thoughts on the photochromic not being useful when driving because the car windshield (supposedly) blocks UV? I noticed that my Serengeti actually do lighten when I drive into an underground car park.
Great glasses and well worth the extra $$$ spent. I've had MJ --- 5 pairs over the years. Current pair is 9 years old in a Rx for my eyes. Service is super fast, warranty is great in case you need it, and sure these are expensive but well worth it. Lens Color is somewhat dependent upon what type activities your need them for. I use HCL Bronze for glare, snow glare, and golfing, bike riding. Great glare reduction and great golf glasses when reading greens or watching ball flight. Be careful around water though and spend the $4.00 for a pair of glasses holders that wrap around your neck.
Hate to look over side of boat or kayak and have glasses go "swimming with the fishes"... you will have a BAD day if that happens. So, all in all--- main question remains -- you only have 2 eyes and would you NOT want the best protection for them? I do and not sorry..... get them at reputable optical department though.... and get great service by MJ... Start to finish with my last pair was less than 2 weeks...Great service after the sale too...

I'm looking at the superthin glass lenses and I like that they're supposed to be very scratch resistant, but wouldn't the mirror scratch just as easily? Plz halp

@@SodiumSyndicate i use Wassup HCL bronze for fishing. They are made of super thin glass. Hookipa maui rose are plastic lenses maui pure i use most in the street
@@SodiumSyndicate HCL Bronze lens. The HCL stands for High Contrast Lens, and when combined with the Bronze tint, you get a super contrast-enhancing lens. If you put these on, your surroundings will be warmer and brighter in color. It isn't as darkening as Maui Jim's Neutral Grey lens, nor as high in contrast as the Maui Rose lens. It gives you a nice medium. HCL Bronze lenses work in any type of weather from overcast to full sun and are perfect in a sport setting

I love the rose lens
I wish you would have discussed more about brown lenses. I have sun sensitivity and macular degeneration and even though brown lenses distort colors they warm up all the harsh whites. Do gray lenses block blue light the same as brown ones?
Thank you for that feedback. I plan on making videos targeting each color, not specific to MJ. Brown is a great color for those that want better contrast than Grey.
Regarding blue light, both colors will protect against blue light to the same degree. Most dedicated sunglasses block 98% blue light.

How are their Blue Hawaii lens? Is it just the neutral grey but with an extra blue mirror finish?
Yes. They only really have 4 lens colors. Neutral Grey, HCL Bronze, Maui Rose and Maui HT (green).

I was planning to buy a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses, but got confused in choosing the right lens color.
I am a big fan of grey lenses, but thinking of going with Maui Jim's latest Hawaii Blue lenses. There aren't any worthful review on Blue Hawaii. Do you recommend the blue lenses? Would it be good to use in a tropical/dry/sunny and humid climate region?
Blue is an odd color. Not very common but it’s found on ski goggles from time to time. It provides good contrast but if you’re in bright environments I’d personally still go with the grey or brown. The rose would be next then the blue and lastly the green HT. In that order. But remember, it all depends on your light sensitivity and needs.

according to the MJ website the Hawaii blue is a blue mirror coating on a neutral gray lense
So is there a difference between a pair or high end polarized glasses and Mauli jims that have polarized plus 2. My mauli jims are polarized plus 2's. Just looking for the best fishing glasses. Thx Brad
For fishing, I would get the HCL bronze lens or Hawaii Blue.

I am thinking between Randolph engineering raptors and Maui Jim castles.

Sorry for the delayed response. That’s a great question. Both are good options because they prioritize different things. Randolph frames are mostly made in the USA and their main focus of frame quality. They have iconic styles and they’ve been worn by Tom Cruise in American made and The Rock in Rampage.
Maui Jim’s focus on lenses. They are amongst the best in the business. Their frames are good but it’s not their strength.
If you’re in constant bright light and need to prioritize visual performance then go with Maui Jim. If you want a cool looking, iconic, durable frame then go with Randolph.

Yes they do!! Maui Jim is one of the best prescription sunglass makers. Only thing is you have to go through a local office, no online prescription ordering.
Thanks for explaining the merits of brown vs. grey. Have you ever tried the bronze? I'm guessing that would be lighter than the brown.
Yes I have. I've tried them all and the only brown tone Maui Jim offers is the Bronze. I like to base my lens color around where i'm going to be. By the water i'll go with grey. On a hike in a forest i'll go with a green or bronze.

Thanks. I'm a real newbie when it comes to Maui Jim sunglasses (or any premium brand of sunglasses). I live in the UK so ithe sun isn't always a big problem. :-)

The only one i don't have is the newest blue lense so i can't say anything about them but to me, the grey and bronze are pretty standard and very similar to any other company's grey/copper colors. the HT green is surprisingly good for general use and i like how it doesn't make things too dark. At the same time, you're not squinting as much as you think you might, even when the sun is intense. They're similar to RayBan's old G15 lenses but not as dark. It took a while for me to like the rose/pink lenses. They made me feel gloomy, especially in snowy areas. I think it is because the redness makes it look like the evening red sky which means the day of fishing or whatever is just about over.
After I had Eye surgery lasik my eye is very sensitive to light but also certain sunglasses hurt my eyes. Any recommendations on sunglass brand?
Maui Jim is a great choice because they offer many different polarized lens colors. Since you're light sensitive you may benefit from the Grey lenses because they are dark, plus, all mj sunglasses have a mirror coating.

Do they have any red lenses? I have Achromatopsia and don’t have use of my cones so I’m very light sensitive. I was recommended to get red lens. I’ve never had a good pair of sunglasses so I get nearly daily migraines in the spring/summer and if it snows.
Unfortunately they do not. The closest they come is with a Rose lens and that wouldn't do the job.
I'm far from an expert in this specific situation but I've done a little research and found that most people with Achromatopsia need to have custom sunglasses made because each case is different.
My suggestion would be to find an Ophthalmologist in your area, hopefully with an optical department connected, and go through their red tint samples to find the right shade.
I'm sorry that I don't have much else to suggest at the moment but I really appreciate you leaving the comment here. It's made me more aware of this visual impediment and I will do my best to continue educating myself on this.

Hey bud can you help me out im trying to get a pair of maui jims polarized shades like the ones your wearing in this vidieo , i also need my long distant perscription included in the lenses ...im having a hard time number 1, finding a retail store up here in new haven , ct . what type of shades do you recommend for riding a motorcycle for night time , day time, and for indoors as well, im looking for a good looking pair that can provide me with all of these components in 1 any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thnx
To the best of my knowledge SportRx.com is the only way you'll be able to get Maui Jim glasses with prescription online. They made me a set of prescription Oakley glasses and they did an awesome job. Check them out. Chat with one of their opticians and they'll have all the info you need on prescription maui jim's.

Nice video but you didn't discuss, for instance, rose lenses as it says in the video presentation.
It's not just about darkness, it's about color too! The green & brown change the color of everything! If you want to see what's actually there, gray is the only option...period. And if you want the highest quality lens, glass is the only option. Period.
I live in vegas and have had lots of Maui Jims. I love my bronze composite lenses. The bronze relaxes my eyes more than grey. Glass is very clear and durable, but heavy. I need low weight frames, so thats why my goto are composite HCL lenses.
Which MJ frame is this?
This video help me make decisions to invest in a pair at dillars today however the frame legs crackles and hinges squeak, to much much money do you recommend a similar brand thank you.
It may have been just a defective product. You shouldn't give up on Maui Jim glasses. There are other sunglasses options out there but few compare to the quality of MJ.
@@EyeInfluence love Kawika crystal lenses blue Hawaii it's just I went back to Dillars and they adjusted it but it's still cracking and it wobbles and the gentleman said that they get what they get, mind you its it's the display pair but I paid full price if in the order he placed dosen't come again I'll return them and go to another authorized dealer. thank you so much for responding I can't believe you're such a big influencer and you responded to me thank you so much just wishing I can find an oversized frame from MJ.
@@potajonapotaje4956 It sounds like the person helping you isn't doing enough to fix the problem. If the problem continues you should go to a different MJ reseller. If they give empty support like "we get what we get" I would walk away from that person asap.

I love all my Maui Jim's glasses but I've found they do get shatter rather easily if you drop them more than once
For some reason my glass Mauis haven't haven't. I keep getting lucky. And I won't wear anything but glass Mauis if I go Maui. Best lens in the world
Non glass, go keanon. Amazing ultra model lenses and the tech is amazing. They're legit break proof. Baseball bat couldn't break them and they're almost clear as glass
If I drop my sunglasses it doesn’t matter wether the lenses shatter or not, I would get a new pair anyway.
Is there a quick and easy way to check whether or not lenses are properly grounded and polished?
It could be tricky. To be honest an experienced eye can catch distortion or a defective coating but most machines won’t see it. No real simple way to check.
@@EyeInfluence This is because the machines dont have the same visual cortex as humans do?
There are special machines that could map chromatic aberrations on a lens but they are expensive and typically only found in high end labs. There isn’t a consumer level version of such machine so we have to take educated guesses.
Keep in mind that all plastic lenses have distortion but it is virtually unnoticeable to 99% of humans. For those that notice it, glass or trivex is the best option.

I've had patients tell me that MJ has even offered them great discounts on new frames if their current ones are discontinued.

I see one cost over 1000 why is that? How much was yours and what the difference between oakley technology vs Maui jim technology
I've seen prescription Maui Jim glasses go for close to $900 but I've never seen non-prescription sunglasses from MJ go for $1,000.
As for Oakley vs Maui Jim, they each have unique lenses that people love. Oakley has fine tuned many of their PRISM lenses for specific sports like Cycling and fishing. Maui Jim also has different color lenses and they are tuned for use by water and hiking. Maui Jim makes a lot of their glasses with Glass lenses while Oakley uses different types of plastic. Oakley does this because they need shatter resistant lenses on their sport frames.

Maui Jims are bay far the most premium sunglasses you can buy, mainly because they have the best lenses bar none.

For the money Maui Jim has the best optics, particularly polarized lenses. Yes. Better than all those options
Maui Jims glass is so far ahead imo as far as the best lens made that it's silly. And I was a skeptic. I'm a huge keanon fan and thought they pulled off the same clarity without glass. They didn't. It's close but not the same.
Mauis Grey lens clarity is almost silly at times. And it doesn't change colors but it's still different than other brands Grey. It just pops.
I like their HCL bronze too alot. I only wear their glass though. And only acetate. I want my money's worth when I'm spending alot. Acetate and glass Maui lenses are worth the money. Hands down.
However, I'm not a fan of their other materials. Only their glass. Their polycarbonate is just ok. Maui is Maui because of their unbelievable glass lenses
That's what brings me back to Keanon. They make the best non glass lens in the world. Basically safety lens strength with 90% of glass clarity. Also their ultra brown is better than Mauis HCL as far as color and enjoyable experience. Amazing color.
But either way if going glass and just wanting the best lens in the world, go Maui Jim.

Have you tried REVO sunglasses, I have 3 pairs of Revos and 4 Maui Jims and I can confidently say that Revos are on par with Maui Jims ......I dont see much benefit of one over the other
OMG! Where's the rose! I have their grey (black), thats great on bright sunny day but way too dark when the sky is abt to rain. Thats why i'm looking at rose vs brown now.
Both are great colors but the brown is just a bit darker. Can’t go Wong with either brown or rose though. :)

They ARE the best. I own several pairs myself. Get yourself a pair--you won't be disappointed!
They scratch too easy. I bought a pair of Costa 580 glass lense to prevent scratch
plain lenses are good, prescription grinds are not good at all. I have maybe a dozen pairs now, many are glass. The oldest pair is maybe 15 years old or so. Anyways, 4 of these pairs are prescription and they do not last more than 1-2 years before something happens to the lenses. It's one thing to have very short lifespan, it's another that they do not stand behind their product. Yes, these are MJ lenses made by MJ in MJ colors and materials.
one pair was the Lahaina. the lenses kept cracking at the mount point, i mean full on crack through the lenses where the arm or bridge would be loose. They replaced these 3 times until they wouldn't anymore. Another pair were the south shores with grey lenses in full frames and they developed fine horizontal cracks which i suspect was from a poorly fitting frame or something..both lenses. Another pair were the Puamana's in HT green. They are so severely crazed that they are blurry and the front surface is so completely crazed and peeled that they are NO LONGER DOUBLE GRADIENT mirror!!! They said too bad, time to buy new glasses. In my opinion, all of these are manufacturing defects. I have prescription sunglasses from other major brands that are 20+ years old and they look nearly new other than normal wear. All of my plain lenses MJ's are fine, btw. I have not looked into it but i will bet big that their prescription lenses are not made by the same people in the same facility as their plain lenses. The quality is clearly not the same with Rx lenses. BTW, their prescription sunglasses are $500-1000 depending on what you need.
This is a post you should consider unless you buy new prescriptions every year or 2 (max) and never go back. I will not be buying Rx from them ever again. 3 weeks ago I put Transitions "Drivewear" prescriptions into MauiJim frames that had messed up Rx lenses. so far, so good. I'm not plugging them, i just wanted another polarized lense and i've never tried the transitions products
Thanks for sharing. I can confirm that the prescription lenses are not made in the same factory/lab as the Plano (no Rx) version.
I will say that though the lab is different, I never had an overwhelming amount of returners due to defective products. I don’t work for Maui Jim, I’m just speaking from the perspective of a professional that carried them and sold them.
The prescription lenses aren’t made with glass like some of the Plano versions are. That could be one problem.
Overall, they are best known for the Plano version. I’m sorry to hear that they couldn’t do anything for you. One suggestion would be to order through an optical shop because they often can work directly with the Maui Jim representative. They can do more for you than the customer service person online.

I say it's "wouldn't" not "couldn't"
I do not order any Rx online. Actually, i bought almost all of my glasses in brick and mortar because there are too many counterfeits out there once you get into good sunglasses. So, yeah, I did get the Rx MJ's through an authorized dealer (also happens to be an Opt, Opth school and university in one, so this is a legit purchase) that's also where i get my eye exams even though the students take 5x longer than normal. They've called MJ while i was there and got turned down more than once. I've also had a few good warranty experiences so it's not all negative and, coincidentally, all the good warranty service was not for Rx. Basically, i've come to the conclusion that coverage is NOT the same for plain vs Rx. This is not an issue of buying thorugh unoffical channels. This is an issue of MJ not owning up to the poorly made Rx products i bought. Total cost of those Rx was between $2000-2500 across the 4 Rx pairs. that's a shit load of money for damn glasses, all weak single vision, that are falling apart on their own. Meanwhile, i have some ancient RB's with BL lenses that are 30+ years old...if i told you i bought them this year, you would believe me. likewise for the glass lens MJ's i have that are not prescriptions. If i told you i bought them today based on the lense condition, you would believe me. The Rx MauiJims are another story..if i told you they were my grandfather's worn in WW2, you would probably think they're older than that.
so now i'm basically saying screw it to MJ, i'll find someone else. 4 times with bad MauiJim lenses is enough for me. I would rather have a product with lesser performance that lasts years, than MJ's that are optically better but self destruct after such a short time. For now, i'm trying out these Drivewear lenses in the MJ frames but I'm pretty sure my next step will be checking out Costa Del Mar's. I've heard nothing but good things about their products, fishing people love their glass "580" lenses. I'm not so keen on the full mirroring Costas have which is one reason i liked the subtle MJ gradient mirror finish (unless you're talking about the pair where the mirror is completely peeled off. haha). I'm into this for fishing and a good polarizing layer lets you see the fish through the surface glare of the water.
BTW, some Rx MJ's DO come in glass it adds roughly $150-200 to the standard polycarb choices. Add in bifocal and that's where you run into glasses that are $1000. not all models are available in glass, Rx or not, such as the rimless models.

I have had my prescription sunglasses for about 6 years and they are as good as the day I got them. OK they are not MJ's but nonetheless been used nearly every day in the car, out on the boat and general use. They probably get as much wear as my usual glasses, so gotta pull you up on your 1 - 2 years comment.

After listening to "I am going to tell you everything about MauiJim lenses" for the n'th time, he finally tells it at 3.42.
Best review on sunglasses bar none, way better than that Jeff Goldblum lookalike from SportRx. Goldblum never bothers to show what the image looks like from the lenses themselves, he only talks about them and doesn't even go into detail like the anti-reflective surface on the inside.

If life were only that simple. It's like saying people only need volume control on their stereo. There are those that want more precision. That's where premium lenses from companies like MJ come in.
A stereo has hundreds of permutations and combinations that need input to produce an infinite variety of sound characteristics.
Sunglasses go on your face. That's it.
