  • On March 5, 1770, nine British soldiers shot into a crowd, killing three people and mortally wounding two more, during a chaotic scene on King Street in Boston. The event, which would come to be known as the Boston Massacre, would be used to turn colonists against King George III's rule. The crowd of three or four hundred who were harassing them verbally and throwing various projectiles led to an event that was heavily publicized as "a massacre" by leading Patriots such as Paul Revere and Samuel Adams.
In this story, introduced by Walter Cronkite - Royal Governor Hutchison forbids the British troops by firing on the angry colonists despite the harassment they receive thereby changing the course of history. This episode first aired on October 2, 1955.

I remember watching this series on black and white TV back in the 1950s. I'm 76 now and clearly remember many episodes. We only got 2 channels here in Orlando back then. I look forward to seeing more. I will subscribe.

Very impressive. Aside from all these actors all looking about 10 years older than their real life counterparts, this is exactly how I remember it. Sam Adams Lager was the best in all of Boston, and still is.

I do hope that there will be more videos from that great series of the 1950s, one of the few features of TV that mane it actually worth watching

This is amazing!! Nearing 50 and a life long fan , bit of a collector of classic TV I have never seen this! Also a huge history buff and I’m blown away that this even exists! Super impressive acting, set and wardrobe. What a great way to learn and dive into history, absolutely awesome idea! Would be great if they did something like this now but with the current political climate, idk how well it would go over. Thanks for posting, will be looking for more!

After nearly 70 years, the quality on this effort is still impressive. We can see why it was called "The Golden Age of Television." One could wish that we'd have a few more. Sadly, CBS tried to revive the series in the 1970's, but i don't think this was successful. Maybe the PBS will take up the cause. They did a wonderful job with THE ADAMS CHRONICLES in the 1970's. I'd certainly support any effort by UA-cam to run some more of these TV treasures. Another candidate would be PROFILES IN COURAGE from JFK's book. Tying in with this episode of YOU ARE THERE, PROFILES IN COURAGE did a program on the Boston Massacre and John Adams' defense of the soldiers. A young and then unknown David McCallum played the role.

I WAS THERE when visiting Boston a decade ago and KNOW the incident DIDN'T quite happen this way.... I even held in my hands at the local historical museum the now-laminated ORIGINAL sketch, NOT just the PRINT engraving, made by Paul Revere himself of the attack positions of the mob on the soldiers at the scene. One man was killed in the lane (ironically named "QUAKER Lane") across the way, one man killed near the center of the main street (King Street), and only TWO men were killed directly in front of and near the "arc" of soldiers. Others were depicted merely as circles, indicating they survived, roughly in a line stretching from the corner at the upper end of the main street near the State House. The different routes of approach however indicate that, AS DEPICTED in this video, the assault on the troops WAS a PRECONCERTED action!! The body lying closest to the line of troops was even depicted as having carried a CLUB!!
So they had MORE than just snowballs! AMAZING for its time that a 1950's television docudrama would ACKNOWLEDGE that FACT when school history textbooks were STILL telling students that it was a DISorganized mob that RANDOMLY gathered around the soldier on guard duty that night and NOT a group INTENT on creating a provocation! 🤔🧐

What the producer of this story failed to mention was that most of the Sons of Liberty had worked themselves up to confronting the soldiers at a local Tavern and Sam Adams was quite the tea tottaler !

It's a shame it's not exactly correct but does show some good points of the guard literally being back into the doorway, the officer in the rear and giving the order to fire never did occur though some accounts say he was, but probably for safety he was standing back there but really he was more in line with his men or Infront of them. Also the gathering starting really when he strikes a man taunting a officer then him striking the fellow for good measure
