On December 4, 1783, nine days after the last British soldiers left American soil, General George Washington visited Fraunces Tavern. He invited his officers from the Continental Army to thank them for their service, and to bid them farewell. James McHenry of Maryland wrote that the most emotional part of Washington's resignation speech occurred when "he spoke of the officers who had composed his family." McHenry observed that Washington's hand shook, "and he was obliged to support the paper with both hands.
"With a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take leave of you. I most devoutly wish that your latter days may be as prosperous and happy as your former ones have been glorious and honorable. I cannot come to each of you, but shall feel obliged if each of you will come and take me by the hand."
This episode first aired on February 27, 1955.
'You Are There' began on radio as 'CBS Is There' in 1947 and ran through 1950. It made the transition to TV in 1953 with Walter Cronkite as a live show, transitioning to being a filmed production two years later.

It was never as great as you think it was. That’s your problem. A nation of strutting egotists, racist phobes and religious extremists.
It might’ve been great at its inception, but even then….not as much as you lot think.
