To me, gliding was cut in later Smash games cause the mechanic is fundamentally busted. Its travels very long distances at a base level and it provides near limitless mixups, disproportionally making the recoveries of characters blessed with the mechanic too strong. The only time the mechanic returned in any fashion is Steve's up special in Ultimate, and his version is a heavily watered down version of Brawl's gliding, where it is attached to an up special, has significantly more restrictions in travel distance, and cannot be acted out of with an attack (always puts him into freefall). Despite all of this, it is still considered to be one of the best recovery moves in the game because gliding provides too much mixups, which scares players from edgeguarding him. Additionally, because gliding is a physics-based mechanic, Steve players were able to eventually figure out how to extend its distance farther than it is likely intended (albeit still more limited than Brawl gliding). When the heavily toned down version of the mechanic is still considered a strong recovery tool, then that is the sign of a fundamentally broken mechanic. One last thing to note is that the mechanic still exists in the game files. In SSB4, Meta Knight, Pit, and Dark Pit has animation files for the ability to glide, Dark Pit having it being a carry-over from copying code from Pit. In Ultimate, those three characters, plus Charizard and Ridley also has animation files. Not sure why they took the Charizard animation files away in SSB4, only to give it back in Ultimate. Older Smash games were full of unique and hidden mechanics. Was part of the charm that was watered down after Brawl.
New brawlternative video just dropped
Good luck going all the way Mr. Brawlternative, the quality of your vids continues to rise!
Yess he uploaded
great video, as usual :)
I saw the title alone and just new it was about gliding without even the thumbnail, really good video hopefully this yt thing works for you
Looking forward to more content! I always get excited when you upload
Dude totally keep up the channel, I personally grew up with brawl so these videos are awesome
Yooo, so glad to see that you're trying this out full-time! I'll be glad to see more vids from you!
Another banger video, hope to see you talk more about Smash4, Ultimate or even 64 once the Brawl well starts running dry someyear!
Love the music, great video as usual
Looking forward to what's next from you! Always look forward to your vids, great brawl content
This seems to be a common theme throughout Brawl. Sacrificing balanced and competitive playstyles for stuff that was just cool and fun. Probably why I love this game so much 😭
Good luck going full time with content creation! It's fun to review the crazy aspects of this game!
as a kid I knew this existed, but never knew how to activate it. so it would randomly happen and it would just end me.
I always thought you'd have to activate it by hitting back then forward really fast on the joystick... oops
Best of luck on your youtube journey my dude! You do awesome work and i can't wait to watch your channel grow!
crazy how I was watching your videos this morning(I'm in california) and a new one gets uploaded today
I never played any SMASH game in my life, but your vids are interesting and fun to listen too. Best of luck for that full time.
Love the content so much, glad we’ll get more :)
Really good stuff man. Keep up the great work and follow your dreams!
Love the channel. It’d be so cool if you did a video on each characters best moves and why, talking about the hitboxes and frame data and whatever is broken about them. I’m an avid ult player but some of the older games have super broken moves that I didn’t know about when I was younger and wasn’t playing competitive yet. ❤❤ keep up the great work
Damn, your videos are so good I wouldn't have minded this one having twenty more seconds for the midrolls. Keep up the good work.
Hey, best of luck on the full-time content creation! I love your content and have tons of nostalgia for brawl, so I hope you're able to keep at it for as long as you enjoy it
Best of luck with going full time!
I love everything you put out and would love if you could comfortably keep up this level of production :)
looping around temple with metaknight was always fun
This is my favorite channel at the moment it's so good and I love brawl
Another great vid, hope full time does well for you
Some tournament clips with glide kills/combos woulda been cool to see
Truly exceptional great content Skunch
Good luck going all in, commenting for the algorithm
The goat!!!! Quitting your job is definitely risky, but we all will be here to support you and hope you succeed, and are all definitely looking forward to more awesome brawlternative content ❤️
Congrats on pursuing this full time, you love to see a creator hit that mark in life
Gliding through the long subspace emissary levels was so awesome!
I've thought the glide input was back-forward for the longest time. I guess I never realized it was activated by holding jump, so perhaps I was doing so unintentionally. Either way, great video! Keep up the good work.
I was always confused about what specials exactly the gliding characters had, because I never knew you could glide out of a jump. Good to learn
hey dude glad to hear you're fully focusing on your channel, your content is great so no doubt youll keep growing, good luck and keep the awesome content!
I was fully ready for you to drop this channel after a few months. It seemed like you originally made it to just be a side project where you could express yourself. It's awesome to hear that you're going full time with it. I hadn't subscribed yet, because I didn't think it mattered much, but I'm subscribed now. Best of luck!
wake up babe new brawlternative
Great video as always king
A fun tidbit about Meta Knight's glide attack is that it doesn't share his other attacks' usual property of being transcendent. This means you could actually clank with his glide attack, which isn't something that would work against any other of his aerials and sword-based ground moves.
Hey man, solid stuff as always. Best of luck with the full time focus on the channel, it’s not an easy move, but I can see you going far with it. Your editing is superb and I’m taking some pointers in your videos for future projects myself. Keep up the great work!
Good luck with the channel skunch! It’s always a treat whenever you upload, excited to see more! Please remember tho to not let any upload schedule get in the way of your physical/mental health (or the quality of the vids lol). Take care bro
Having glides was more fun! As a kid I remember it seeming so cool that a few of the winged characters could actually like… fly - there’s something inherently cool about certain characters in a large roster having unique mechanics
2:06 Brawl Online taunt parties on this stage were something special
Huh. All these Brawl fun facts sort of videos I've seen and just now I'm learning that glide attack is even a thing
I've seen so many clips of Metaknight doing.. his thing offtage, gliding multiple times and such but this is the first time I'm learning how gliding actually works. Cool!
Great video as per usual!
output lately has been insane and every single video has been good. insane how you're likely to get a income from youtube! looking forward to the future of this channel :)
As a kid I only used tap jump and couldn't understand how to glide with anyone but MK. As a teen playing Project M I instantly fell in love with the glides of both Pit and Zard. As an adult I continue to with for its return as a mechanic in mainline Smash games, even though I know that its chances to returning are lower than Samus getting to use her morph ball as a crawl in one.
The glide is a perfect mechanic whose reputation was ruined by being tacked onto a busted character, but even there it's so cool
1:48 another way to do it is to keep rocking left and right. They’ll just start gliding for some reason
