  • How to make a wireless DIY rainbow epoxy resin LED lamp that transforms between a sconce, table lamp, and task light. The first 100 people get 50% OFF their first coffee from Trade via this link: bit.ly/trademodmaker Just use the code “modustrial”.
    This is a simple DIY woodworking and epoxy resin project. I used a layer of white epoxy resin covered by a layer of clear epoxy resin to diffuse the LED strips. The lamp is made of three pieces that connect with a clever system of magnets and steel washers, that allow you to transform the lamp from a vertical sconce, to a horizontal scone, to a desk lamp or table lamp, to a task light. And since the lamp is battery-powered and rechargeable, it is easy to use in many situations. (The batteries last about 3 hours under normal use.) To top it off, the LED controller I used has a Bluetooth app, that allows the LEDs to be controlled via a Bluetooth connection to your phone.
    The lamp base and light bar are made from hardwood maple, and involve fairly simple woodworking skills. The support block was 3D modeled in Fusion 360 and 3D printed using my Anycubic 3D printer.
    The LED strips I used were SK6812 RGBWW LEDs. These LED strips are individually controllable neopixels that have RGB LEDs and separate warm white LEDs, so the lamp can do colorful displays and operate in a music syncing mode, or serve as a more refined and sophisticated warm white light source.

    Love the design! The epoxy diffuser is such a great idea! I have an idea for a v2.0 for this that uses the magnets and specifically the screws holding them down as power contacts for the leds. Would have to find a driver small enough to tuck into the bar but if you always make the polarity of the magnet match the polarity of the power contacts the bar will always be powered with correct polarity. Since the control lines are all inside the bar you could just mount powered magnets all over the place with the correct spacing. Since 5v or 12v power supplies are so easy to come by you could integrate mounts in all kinds of weird places

    Really cool lamp! One of my favorite parts is how the light bar is repositionable, it makes it versatile and ensures it will remain useful and asthetically pleasing for years to come.
    I've seen tons of lights which were very artistic but which were limited in how they could be used, placed, or oriented in a space.
    One improvement would be using magnets to connect the power and data to the bar itself, so repositioning or reorienting the light would be as easy as picking it up off the base and reorienting the bar. Though this would have required some more magnet inlays and might have harmed the asthetics of the wood, not to mention added some complication to wiring the LEDs inside the bar as well as tweaking the voltage and current of the power supplied to the magnets to account for any extra resistance provided by the magnets.
    If I were to undertake this myself, I'd also make a USB power connector inlay for the wood, either carved to fit flush along the contours of the USB connector or carved to just about perfectly fit the contours of the connector and then filled with puddy, wood glue, or a color matched epoxy resin so that the power connection looks like part of the wood itself. An alternative would be to place the USB connector inside the electronics cavity and make a cord passthrough hole; bonus points for a bisected rectangular prism to fit the chiseled out slot, with two half circles and magnets for easy cord replacement or removal.

      Thanks! I made a blanket tent, used the new mic, and did auto-leveling only.... Didn't mess with the compressor or EQ at all. Sometimes I figure it is best to leave well enough alone :)

    Darn it, now I have to learn how to solder too, the list just gets longer.
    I love these

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +3

      Thanks! Soldering is much simpler than it seems at first....think of it like taking a hot glue gun in one hand, and glue stick in the other, and touching the stick of glue to the tip of the gun to melt it. Just like that, except metal instead of glue....

      Just picked up a soldering iron on Amazon a month or two ago because I kept seeing Mike and some other channels I follow doing builds like this. I was as surprised at how simple it is to get started. There a a lot of great tutorials on UA-cam.

    Looks like you faired better than I with soldering wires to the tiny pads on those 144/m density LED strips. I do like the french cleats for easy wall mounting and the light itself. They would go nicely with the small square lights I've recently been playing with and I feel your pain on those warped boards.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +2

      The trick is you just have to sacrifice one pixel when cutting them. Instead of cutting the pads in half, cut it off so the whole pads are left next to the pixel you solder to.

    • @bipolarchemist
      @bipolarchemist 5 років тому

      That would be the easier solution. I went the option of having a PCB made and we'll see how well that goes once all the parts arrive. My design has a removable light tower in the center of layered wood/plexiglass so the custom PCB made sense, but if you cut from the opposite end of the LED strip, you may not have to sacrifice a pixel. I might just have to try that.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Hari! I usually just use one camera, but I'll film repetitive tasks from multiple angles, so it will seem like I have more :) I occasionally use a GoPro for a second angle, but I think this video was all shot on my Canon 6d mk II. And yup, I use sketchup with the keyframe animation plugin.

    What thickness of white resin did you need for the light to be contiguous, and not see individual leds?

    • @k1sfd1974
      @k1sfd1974 Рік тому +1

      From the look of what was routed after, I’d say about 1/4” (6mm) of white, and then 1/4” (6mm) of clear on top. That will of course depend on how much pigment you add, which will change the opacity.
