    Since this DIY LED cube light is battery powered and wirelessly charged it is totally portable and has a ton of uses -- a mood light, a party light, a night light, etc. The video also shows how to make the custom wireless charging pad for the epoxy LED cube, which an easy woodworking project. This LED cube light is battery-powered by a LiPO.
    I used Total Boat 2:1 epoxy resin to make the cube, doing small 1/2" epoxy pours to build up the epoxy in the melamine form.

One of the best parts of your videos is that there is ALWAYS at least one little tip or trick that get's me thinking of other applications and for this one it was using the aluminum foil tape. Really nice project, I feel like you could hugely reduce cost by 3d printing 90% of this project or even use a wooden centre. Then just have a final thin layer of epoxy to coat the project still doing the white part the same way.

    • @modustrial

      Total boat high performance 2:1 gave me the best results, in that there were no visible layer lines....it takes a bit of patience doing a 1/4" at a time, but the results are good. I tried the less expensive tabletop epoxy for the second cube I showed briefly at the end, and it definitely had visible layer lines. I haven't had any experience with deep pour like exopoxy because it is $$$$, but total boat is supposed to release a more affordable deep pour epoxy soon... Maybe to satisfy the haters you can incorporate an aluminum channel and fan? The non-replaceable version doesn't seem that much different than potted electronics to me so I'm not too sure what all the complaints are about...at least with the LEDs as even the 12V ones don't generate /that/ much heat. For your internal cavities, have you tried aluminum cans? I'm curious if they are as easy to work with as the aluminum tape in either a coated or sanded form. Might be easier to work with than the melamine forms.

    Great vid. not sure how I missed this until now. Regarding the wood pendant light that you mentioned in this video I have a quick question about routing a channel along the trunk of a de-barked tree with partial (chopped) branches extending out of the trunk at various intervals. I want to line these channels with LED strips and cover with a diffusing material to create light strips that are flush (more or less) along the trunk..
    Do you have any recommendations on how I would route a clean channel along the undulating trunk of the tree (Diameter is about 4-5 inches). I was wondering how I could create a guide along the trunk to steady a router. (I have a cheap standard sized plunge router and a dremel). I fear that just routing by hand would be too inaccurate.
    Thanks for your advice. LOVE your projects and videos.

    Hey Mike, the first timer to your channel and "WOW" I really like your channel and videos. I'm gonna watch over again. Your videos really inspiring to make some things myself.
    But, have you ever put an speaker and LED lights in your boxes like that? I just thought about it?
    Let me know. And keep up the good work 👌 and videos coming.
    Hit me put sometime.

    Suggestion for those who like the replaceable LED light idea. Pour first layer of black epoxy. Then place a block inside the mold that only allows a centimeter or so around it and pour the white light strip. REMOVE that block, put in a block that allows a thicker wall, and pour a clear layer of epoxy. Now the light window is properly thick, but only has a thin bit of white to diffuse the light. Continue pouring black until full.

    Another awesome video, was waiting for this one and not disappointed, 👍🏻,
    Ignore the haters mate, this is a great channel with great projects, even if we don't make the exact same project the ideas we get are invaluable,
    Also I have had 4 meters of 12v RGB led strip and 4 meters of WW led strip stuck to a wooden board behind my tv, each 4 meter strip running on a 12v 4 amp power supply plugged into a standard UK wall socket, both strips have been running a minimum of 12 hours a day constantly for SIX YEARS, they get switched off for 1 week a year for holiday, I've had ZERO heating problems, no fires, no failures, nothing, as long as you take the time to wire them properly and feed the correct current in they'll be fine.
    Can't wait for the next project,
    Again mate, ignore the haters, your subscriber count says everything.
    Take care,

    When pouring a thicker band, use less white dye so it's not as opaque, then the lights will be brighter (or use stronger LED's that produce more light)...

    I realize this vid is already a year old, but I’m curious about the charging circuit. How are you able to charge it and use the battery at the same time (as in the beginning of the vid)? Did you implement load sharing? The tp4056 doesn’t have that built in, so I’m wondering how you did that

    cool project. and great work on redoing the project and addressing the issues.
    do you know how the sp106e reacts to different amounts of LEDs when displaying patterns? i could not find anything about that online.
    it really seems to be a good alternative to arduino boards.
    i do some arduino builts on my own, but i struggle with the LEDs reacting to music and a lot of the animation part.
    edit: some of the animation in my videos is done with code available on github. my videos are not really well done but some might interest you

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      No issues yet as far as things not working, BUT, there is one big design issue with the sp107e. You can only use 1 at once, unless you use different phones to control different controllers. The only way to control the sp107e is thru the iPhone/Android app over Bluetooth, and the app only let's you connect to one sp107e controller at a time.

    Why with your second box, did you mill out the channel for the white strip? Why not pour the top black level, wait for it to cure, attach your internal form, pour the white strip, wait for partial cure and then pour the remaining black? Then you work to remove your form to get your internal cavity and install your electronics but there is no machining left to do except for polishing. Or is it just easier to mill out the channel?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому

      You could do that, but you wouldn'tbe sure to get a straight line between black and white due to surface tension between melamine and the epoxy
