I've never heard of this story, but the way you told it was so respectful, first time I've come across one of your videos, im from Blackburn myself and im also a frequent attender of the football at Ewood Park, ill be sure to follow for more content ❤
Many thanks Kirsten. It's a tragic story and one I'm glad we covered. Also, thanks for joining our little community 😃 We try to cover many local stories but also we are now travelling further afield 👍
My mum was Donna Stewart as you can read her name in the newspaper clip. She lived at 84 Nuttall street whilst Blakemore was the landlord, a bully. We have just watched this and you have great coverage. Although, at trial, there was sufficient evidence to convict him, and he had the audacity to blame my mum, as the judge summed up before passing his sentence. A very very sad story. One that she will never forget.
Hi Sophie. It's such a tragic and sad story and we have since read other articles and what Brian was like, and they pretty much confirm what you have said here. During the video, I think I tried to not say anything that may have been seen as being liable, but looking back, there was loads I had written down. Just wish I had included more now.
Remember the case very well, being a Rovers fan and visiting the area frequently. My personal opinion on the conviction of the victims landlord, is understandable, the very fact their was a lack of evidence, would be the reason he only got 12 years, and reduced on appeal. To say the guy had a dark side, is a bit of an understatement. but great coverage.
Hi Rob and thanks for commenting. I remember hearing this story when I used to go to Ewood with my step-dad but it's one that I also forgot about over the years. It's a sad one for sure and just like many of the other stories we have covered, its awful and another needless loss of life.
I was on the jury for this case. The only reason we didn't find him guilty of murder was that there was no evident cause of death. Blakemore was definitely responsible for Julian's death and he should have served a much longer sentence in my opinion.
Thanks Carol for posting. It does seem he was very much responsible. We have since had the man who was contracted to dig the area, contact us, speaking about the day the body was discovered by one of his employees.
Many thanks pal. This was a bit of a mismatch as we had two places to visit but time wasn't on our side today. Just hope I've covered the basics well enough in this. There is more on our website covering this story.
Many thanks Stephen. We had some issues on this video, with some footage being unusable due to microphone problems. I hope it has come across fine though. Thanks for watching 😁
The website, to be honest, needs a revamp. We keep playing with it, but with youtube now taking up all pur time - from the initial research to going out to the locations and then to edit the story, we have let the website slide. It's something we aim to rectify, though. This story, we didn't put any other info on the site, just the video that is found on yourube.
Thanks Rebecca! We know at the moment, because many of our stories are local, it may not be for everyone, but we are looking at further afield next year and covering peoples stories from other towns and villages and cities so please keep watching. This year has been more difficult with ever increasing costs of petrol but like I say, next year we will be travelling further afield.
@@DaysofHorror there was a young lady that lived next door but one to me who was a WAAF in Ww2. She got murdered when she was stationed in Goodwood. Never seen her story recalled. @@GhostLivesMatter Marguerite Burge - aged around 22 yrs? I've just had a look using British Newspaper Archives and there is a bit on the story over there. I'll have a delve into this one for sure.
Thanks Matt. The more recent stories like this I'm always a little reluctant to look into but people tell me not to marginalize as it's still a sad case and it/they do occur no matter what.
I'd heard of the story but like many others, had simply forgotten it as the years went by. But this is why we do these videos, to try and hopefully keep the victims names alive and to be never forgotten. Some might say it's bringing back bad memories for the families, but we feel it's only right that the victims are never forgotten, just as we had forgotten about poor Julian ourselves.
This was indeed a tragic case. I have to disagree when you say you don’t think there was much proof. There was plenty of circumstantial evidence which is proof when there’s a lot of it. The convicted man knew the victim and had been seen in his company numerous times before his disappearance. The convicted man owned 84 Nuttall Street where the body was buried. He purchased it for £4000 using his compensation money from his road accident a few years before the killing of Julian in August 1984 .After moving out he informed tenants not to do any work in the garden and not to dig in a certain area as there were “ cables” there that shouldn’t be disturbed.which was in-fact the area the body was buried. They used advanced techniques with surveying equipment to reconstruct the garden area as it had all been demolished. It was known after his arrest that he produced soft porn images of men and women and was selling these. The male ones often in the Gay village in Manchester. Julian was a good looking lad and a good actor according to friends. He had a place to study drama at the prestigious Manchester Theatre Company but never took it up. He drifted from one job to another and was sacked in January 1984 from an office job. That’s when he took up the job in the sex shop and got to know Blakemore. So it’s possible he could have been doing photoshoot work for Blakemore for a bit of extra cash. The BBC programme Moment of Proof Serious 3 episode 10 covers this case with the investigating officer in the case retired Detective Superintendent Lee Halstead explaining the case in some detail. Evidence a jury hears is normally much more extensive then what is ever released to the public and he was convicted so you have to accept the evidence was there to convince 12 jury members of his involvement in the death. Considering he was given 7 years for manslaughter and 5 for perverting the course of justice in reduced on appeal it’s a pretty light sentence really for the death of a 19 year old with his whole life ahead.
My mate was working at Ewood park, I remember say in the pub with him and I told him about a body being found. He told me that they were laid off from the work and it was delayed due to one person on nuttal street wouldn’t move from his house.
8:34 we didn’t know who he was or what the result was. I think an edit of that bit leaving his name out until that next walking talking segment would make more sense.
Yeah we had issues with a piece of footage jus before we found the headstone. It was like there was a lot of static interference which made it unusable. It also happened whilst we were on Nuttall Street. I spoke of the prosecutor's using possible homosexuality as a reasoning behind the crime and Brian stating in court he had never gone down that road etc. But again, could not use that footage 🫤
My uncle gave evidence in in court in this case. Blakemoor employed him to concrete the rear area of the house.blakemoore wanted and insisted on excess amounts of concrete put down, deeper layer than needed .my uncle advising him it was not needed, he descibed him in court as an oddball
I had forgotten about this tragedy. Given the evidence which doesn't appear very strong I can't see the judge at the time issuing a longer sentence. Wether Brian committed the crime or not, I find it strange that nobody witnessed or heard anything. It doesn't seem possible that he could be capable of the murder or burying the body given his health conditions. Unless he had help from some unknown person. Could there be some evidence that hasn't been made public? A very sad case.
Please watch the BBC episode on moment of truth, series 3, episode 10. There was overwhelming evidence that Brian was guilty. My mum lived at 54 Nuttall street. He was a bully.
Thanks for the video once again. Obviously Brian Blakemore would be prime suspect seeing as he owned the house and knew Julian previously. My biggest doubt would be whether somebody who had a severe limp, was blind in one eye and had arthritis was physically capable of subduing and killing a 19 year old unless Julian was very small in stature himself or he was attacked when he was incapacitated in some way.
Me and Vickie had a long discussion driving back through Blackburn on this. We questioned if Julian may have been incapacitated too. Drugs maybe? But the pathologist could find no evidence of how he was killed or died. But also, we spoke of how Brian may have struggled too with his ailments.
Dreadful.... I remember Julian well, him and his brother Adrian ( a.k.a. Ben) used to hang out with my brother. The Brookfileds' were friends of our family going back to when they lived off Earl St in Blackburn during the seventies. The lads had experienced the tragedy of losing their father Bob at an early age. Julian's disappearance destroyed his mother Annette, god bless her. I didn't know Adrian had also died until I saw his headstone on this video. Very saddened to learn of that. Does anyone know whether Annette is still alive? Seems there is scant information on the case from your coverage. I don't see how Police couldn't have determined who was implicated in the case and established exactly what had happended. Ridiculous.
Thanks for waching Eric and spending the time to leave a comment. As for Annette, I'm sure someone posted a comment a while back saying she had passed away BUT I could be wrong. I'll have a read through them and also ask around. Its a terrible story and one we had come across a few years ago.
@@DaysofHorror Was chatting to my mum about Annette today. She was telling me how when she was elected as a councillor in Blackburn, she was the youngest councillor in the borough's history.

why would he only get 7 years for murder and five for concealment . Strange sentence , in the eyes of the law he was found guilty. was julian and Adrian brother. Very close in age, both died early
If I'm correct, Adrian was an older brother and he too went missing a few years before Julian. It was Julian who went to the local press and tried hard to find where Adrian was. Luckily, Adrian was found safe and well eventually.
