Firstly I would like to commend Vicky for going on these long walks despite her disability. Well done. You are an inspiration for people who also suffer from disabilities to get out and get some fresh air and exercise. ❤ If such a thing had to happen today I should imagine that an MRI scan would be a good thing to test to see if there were maybe a brain tumour or cancer developing in Michael to see if there was a medical reason for a well liked young man to go rogue. But personally I am looking at the location and I believe that these murders were premeditated. He took them to a very quiet and deserted location where their cries and struggles would not be heard. From your description of the incident it sounds that he only did further harm to himself when the three lads discovered the awful scene. But indeed the pains in his head would definitely have needed further investigation. I f depression drove him to do what he did it is possible that having to collect rent from families whuch were really struggling with poverty could have affected his reasoning abilities. But the location that they were found points to premeditation.
Vickie really appreciates your kind words. It means a lot. A double hip replacement is not the easiest of things to go through, but Vickie is always with me when out filming and it benefits us both as we are keeping healthy with all the walking.
@@DaysofHorror This makes me think about a story about the Queen Mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Apparently, she also had two hip replacements done and it is said that she was so tenacious that after the second operation the staff were horrified to find that she was waist deep doing fly fishing on the Edinburgh Estate. R.I.P. Your Majesty.
Hi, yes I see where you are going with your comments to this story and seems very plausible. May I thank you for you lovely comments too. As I was born with hip dysplasia in both hips and only had my double hip replacements within the last 3 years, my body still walks with a limp as that is all it has ever known so i have week muscles. Walking does help build up strenght, but due to the limp and me conscious of it, is why I am not on camera that often. Again, thank you for you support. Have a good week 😊
I have one hip replacement so can't imagine two.it is painful sometimes as it is with you I know but you are inspirational and it will hopefully for you improve with time.watching you climb over that wall showed your determination..your contributions to the stories are always well delivered and interesting also..keep it up guys
OMG! That childrens grave. Those poor parents losing all those babies! 😢 My first daughter was stillborn in 1996 and that feels like yesterday. I can't imagine going through it that many times.
My condolences on the loss of your baby. She will be waiting to meet you some day. My mother lost twins who were born premature and they were buried together arm in arm in my grandfather's grave in a coffin placed on the top of his. She lived till the age of 77 but she never forgot them and they carried a very special place in her heart. Maybe times have changed from the time of that mother but if so many babies had to die one after the other in one family it would raise suspicions and would be investigated. The chance of postnatal depression would be looked into.
Your stories are very interesting, and you present so well I can just picture the scenes and emotions at the time. I also really love the beautiful countryside you explore, it reminds me very much of the state of Vermont in the USA where I grew up on a farm. I am of English, Scottish, and Norwegian ancestry I so love to see the countryside of my forefathers.
Thank you for the lovely comments, I love doing the stories in the countryside/woods seeing nature at its best. Have a lovely week and thank you for yoir support and interacting with us 😊
Very sad story and very sinister as well. That poor lady what she must have gone through as well as the children. The scenery is beautiful indeed. Another interesting story thanks for sharing 👍👍
Hi, regarding Broadmoor, yes, it's still operational. If you're old enough to remember'The Members' they referenced the 'Broadmoor sirens' in their song 'Sound of the suburbs.' They lived in nearby Camberley. Good episode, thanks 🙏
I wonder if this man had something going on in his head that affected his brain with him complaining of pain there. He could have snapped and attacked his wife and daughter not realising or why he was doing it?. So my theory is something wrong in his brain. Thank you so much for another great video!. 👏👏👍👍
Awesome! Thank you! We have a story in Carlisle we are itching to record. We tried a couple of years ago and the final footage was awful. It was windy that day and although we did manage to cover the story, the finished result was unuseable. Still, we have a good weekend up there!
In the 1800s early 1900s those that had no money got buried in a paupers grave. For a few pennies not sure how much , you could have your name put onto a memorial headstone along with lots of unrelated folk. Maybe this is a children's plot with parents paying for the name of their child to be added . great video x
This is truly great stuff and all credit to you both. I'm a Skipton historian, and I've covered this story on many occasions in my books. It's given me a further insight to the story. I've always thought that the stile in question was the one at the top of Chapel Hill, which leads to Park Hill. This only because in was reported in the local news that stile led to Park Hill, and not on the hill itself. Either way, the was a magnificent report on the story and you are to be congratulated! For myself, I had a serious stroke 5 years ago which has more or less put my permanently on my back, so I applaud Vicky getting out there. I will follow you with great interest from now on. Yours, Malcolm Hanson - and yes, it's a hoop and stick 😀😀
Cheers Pal! This one was a brutal story. So much anger from Matthew and we will never know the true or real reason why he committed murder. I personally cannot believe it was simply down to suffering with pain in his head and there is more to the story. Im going to be delving a little deeper into this one if I can and hopefully in time I may be able to find more on this character.
Your videos came up on my list and I have watched quite a few. As an American I have not heard of these stories. Very interesting, well presented. Thank you 👍
Yes, again something to think about. I love that our stories get us all thinking and interacting with each other on our thoughts to them. As always Linda thanks for your support and commenting 😊
Do you think it’s possible the murder took place next to the stile at 23:30 in the video? It seems to fit your description perfectly. Great video by the way!
Thanks for the kind words. It's hard to say if I'm being honest. The wall where the think it may have occurred would make sense based on the locality of the woods and the direction the boys came from, BUT, the stile could also be the area. If I remember correctly, I think we both mentioned off camera that we wondered if this might have been the area.
The other child on the grave stone is holding a Victorian toy its known as a hoop and stick they would roll the hoop along the floor and hit it with a stick to keep it rolling and run alongside it sweet! 😊
Very strange and horrific story. It sounds like a man who had lost his mind weeks or months leading up to this and eventually lead to murder. In that state of mind, maybe he didn't even realise what he was doing! I don't think it was planned, I think it only took a small argument while walking across Park Hill for him to flip,
It makes me wonder if something more was going on in the home. Such a bizarre and tragic story though. We are scouring newspaper articles for stories further afield now. Skipton we know very well so thought we'd start there.
Something was ceryainly amiss with Matthew. Obviously struggling with his head but still, that doesn't warrant taking the lives of two people 🤷 Very hard to understand what was going on and perhaps there were issues in the home that no-one knew about, but again, doesn't mean you go and murder your wife and child. Sad story all round.
You might be right about the stile, we just went off out findings and this is where we thought it was but cannot be 100%. Glad we did the video justice for you and you enjoyed it. I am sorry to hear about you health, stay strong Malcolm. Xxx

Thanks Mike for the lovely comments and yes I love the stories we cover in the countryside/woodlands like you. Have a good week and thank you for your support 😊
Such a traffic and sad tale. I wonder if Mathew had tried something like this before especially has he had a knife take from him previously a few weeks earlier by the landlord of the pub and that was why Elizabeth was showing signs of being scared of Matthew.
All we know is he had threatened 'people' whilst in the pub and that's what the landlord followed him and took the knife away. It's hard to say if he had threatened his family before but I'd hazard a guess and say they were more than likely having some issues behind closed doors. It would make sense for Alice to be looking scared that morning when William Whittaker had gone to their home to pay his rent money and Matthew wouldnt let his daughter go into the house. Both Alice and Elizabeth seemed to be a little nervous from the sounds of it.
Missed the live. Bank holiday, am on the lash. Have half hour free so might as well get this horror in asap. I’m sure I’ll have another comment to make before the video is over 😂 Keep up the good work you two and, as always, stay safe!
I’m fairly sure of what the answer will be but could we get a little more Vicky commentary please? Seems she sometimes (often when you look at the edits) prompts you on stuff you would have forgotten during the monologue.
She is always reminding me of things or comes up with ideas when we are out. I've told her to get on film more but nope, still not keen on the idea 🤣 I'll try and get her to at least talk behind the camera which would work 👍
@@DaysofHorror yeah definitely, just more commentary from V would be ace. I’ve not heard her say anything wrong in all the videos you’ve made! (Apart from when you lead her astray with your theories 😂)
I used to live near Broadmoor & drank in the social club occationally as my then wife's uncle was a screw there. I also played a gig there at the East Berkshire cribbage award night in 1985.
What a tragic story. The carved child on the grave is holding a hoop. This would be propelled along the road using the rod in her other hand. A common Victorian toy.
I need to go back to this video as it's been such a while since we recorded it. It seems to be getting a lot of views at the moment, so I want to rewatch it to make sure I'm replying to the right things 😆
At 25.26 The circle and stick that the child is holding is a hoop and stick, a game children would play where they would hit the hoop with the stick and send it rolling away and would run and hit it to keep it going. It was just called "hoop and stick," "bowling hoops," or "gird and cleek."
Perhaps he didn’t want to leave his wife and child behind to suffer in poverty and in his deranged way of thinking taking them with him to death would spare them that. Maybe the headaches and voids in memory was caused by a brain tumour it would likely explain the change in his behaviour too. So sad. All those children lost to one family that was so very tragic
As her carried a knife on several occasions I'm sure he intended to murder his wife and daughter, however it sounds as though the was suffering from some sort of mental illness, so perhaps the jury came to the correct verdict.

If he intended to kill them surely the second spot you mentioned would be more likely, away from a pathway where someone may see or intervene.
