Preach it man. People just don’t understand all that it takes to fix a car and how you have to know. My mentor told me the deference between a mechanic and doctor. Is a doctor only has to deal with 2 models that never changes and we have to deal with hundreds of models the change every year. So we millions of models that we have to know how to work on
I would love to fix cars full time. I love fixing cars and learning new stuff. You get everything cool that you can ever do all wrapped up in one metal box with wheels. For the first time in my life I am considering abandoning my chosen field and switching careers. The crazy thing is it would be more hours for less than half the pay I get as a network engineer. I have been talking with some local shops and I have a lot of friends that are in auto repair. I took a day off work a while back and spent it doing auto repair in a shop for free. I LOVED it. Life is too shot to spend it sitting in a cube doing a job I am not enjoying. I am also trying to figure out if I hate fixing computers and networks now or if I just hate doing it where I am working at now. The main thing stopping me from quitting is health insurance. I am trying to quit smoking now (day 2), and I am going to work on getting off the weight and get my health in check and I may just quit my cube job and go for it.
Do what you love and it will never feel like a job. That is the greatest thing in live. Being healthy is one of the hardest thing to do and if you can do that then you can do anything. I know cause i was healthy for 6 years before starting this business. Now, i'm trying to go back to being healthy and that's even harder. LOL I believe in you Tom. You can be a great tech one day.
I know were you are coming from Tom. Before I graduated from HS my mom always thought my brother & I would be mechanics but I ended up in college & my brother is a garbage truck mechanic. I have a bachelors in Business with a major in accounting & I'm so sick of the office life. I also went to school for computer science but I got sick of working on computers & programming. I always enjoyed working on cars & have continuously thought about being an auto tech but with my wife's health problems I just can't take that kind of pay cut. I like my current boss a lot but she's retiring at the end of this year & I'm afraid that I'm not going to like her replacement & that just might motivate me to make the change.
It should be known mechanics are really underpaid, everyone should make videos like this lol especially how this automotive stuff is moving so fast and making so much too learn and keep up with all the changes
If it is part of the service than it should be charged for. If you as a business man are charging fairly just tell the customer it is part of the repair. Even if Auto Zone diagnosed the light it still must be verified by the professional doing the repair. Great vid again!
A month ago I took a 2nd job at AutoZone to help pay off my wife & daughters Dr. bills. Trying to explain to the DIY customers that they need to have an Auto Tech diagnose the car for them is like pulling teeth. They think that all they have to do is throw parts at it & problem solved. Most of the time they start their conversation off like, "but my friend said all I need to do is replace these parts blaa blaa blaa". I had a customer last night that had close to a dozen codes (P0420/P0430, a couple of camshaft codes, Evap codes etc.) & this guy wanted to buy new cats. After 15 minutes of trying to tell him that he needs to get these other issues fixed before he goes wasting money on new cats he and still wasn't convinced.
i have been the real deal mechanic for 43 years now and this man is right , here is what i do , when i know for a fact a duffus jerkoff loser is in my shop i give him a price so high before i touch it to just make him or her go away ,but if my type of customer comes in well dressed , nice car and attitude i roll out the red carpet and get paid everytime , i dont touch hood type peoples cars , they are losers that want something for nothing lol

They dont understand what it takes to do the job right, but as a diy guy who understands what it takes to do the job so I have a hard time paying full bore on a gravy repair that the book gives 3 hours and get it done in 45 minutes. The way I see it yes you can charge full time but if you wont stay in business doing shysty jobs like that especially if its someone who could use a brake and split the difference with the customer in saved time. Thats more time on your clock to make more money and more money with a happy customer that didnt get ganked.
