You mentioned Dream’s statement that he hadn’t heard the music for 200 years. That’s because Schubert wrote the piece 200 years earlier. As they show with Shakespeare in this episode, art is inspired by dreams, so Morpheus knows the works when they are created.

So the interesting thing with Death is she's there two times in someone's life: right before they're born and to greet them when they die. She guides the person to whatever their next step is, but she doesn't see that part.
One of the things I love about Neil Gaiman is he can take concepts that folks say are cheesy and just give you that new perspective.
The "looking for rabbits" joke I think has the friar's hand up the lady's dress, if I remember it right.
One last thing. At the meeting where Hob is talking about the Queen sleeping at his house, that's kind of a strange thing. He really does mean she slept at the house, not that he slept with her. At that time, if you hosted the Queen you also hosted her court too (and footed the bill yourself). It was insanely expensive but an equally big social honor of the time.

THE best episode of the entire show....2 story with life and death at the center...and purpose...It's just beautiful ! The actress who play Death really nailed her personnality, so different of all version in any media and in a way logical...wath do you really want to see when you die ? A kind word and a friendly face really. Also can't believe they really had the balls to do the baby scene, it hits like a brick ! The second one, when you think about it, Death pretty much created one of the most beautiful friendship ever...I absolutly love the evolution of Hob Gadling !

As are most of the other episodes, this episode is comprised of two issues, _The Sound of Her Wings_ and _Men of Good Fortune._ They’re even separated by a few issues, but you can see how well they fit together in their themes.
Death does have wings. They are said to be dark and beautiful. They appear for those whose time is meant to have come, so it’s understandable that she might be mistaken by some for an angel. Having such a nice attitude, instead of the stoic, somber, or scary depictions many people might expect, would also add to that, of course. Some may have seen certain aspects of her, but didn’t clearly see her because it ended up not truly being their time to go, giving us these other interpretations of Death’s personification.
To give Sam a nicer resolution, I like to think that since there are accounts of people finding out in a dream or vision something to do with someone close to them who recently passed away, this might have happened for Sam’s wife. Death, being the compassionate one she is, perhaps decided to get the phone code, and pass it along to Dream who could present it to the wife in that way.
Hob Gadling certainly made some terrible mistakes, but slowly as it may be, he seems to be learning to avoid the worse ones. I’m glad Morpheus took the opportunity to advise him against slavery. He sort of told on himself there (without even realizing it himself), with his concern for Hob and how his decisions can have a very negative effect on others, which could lead to long regrets.
I think it’s so interesting how Death and Dream get along well, while Dream and Desire have a more troubled sibling relationship than you might expect. Yeah, there are reasons, but I won’t tell. 😉

@@Squeekysquid Things can get a bit nebulous, and the semantics might get tricky regarding that, but I think your observation is astute. While the manifestation of each realm of The Endless (The Dreaming and The Threshold, in this case) exists separately, I think it naturally follows that those two have a particularly strong overlap in their influence as concepts. Even as twins (lots of overlap there), Desire and Despair dwell in separate realms from each other.

This episode was like the breath you take after dealing with so much tension, that's why it plays slower. Even if it does hurt because death is part of life. And Dream's pout is nearly comic accurate, though he's more extra with it in the comics than the show.

Gaiman wanted the sort of Death he would want to meet at the end of his life. I agree, wholeheartedly.
As a side note, Queen Elizabeth (I) used to travel around the nobles of her realm. Having to host the Royal Court when it appeared at your door usually put such a heavy financial burden on the noble that they couldn't even contemplate affording a rebellion. The length of her stay was dependent on how dubious she found the noble. It was quite effective. It wasn't a conjugal visitation.
And yes, that was the Lady Joanna Constantine, a direct ancestor of John, duplicating her actual appearance in the comic. Given that Gaiman couldn't get the rights to use John (aka Hellblazer) and wished to divorce the Sandman from the DC Universe anyway, he decided to use Joanna in the role that John would have had in Episode 3. Her immortality might be explained in the next season, when the "little assistance" she was able to provide Dream might actually be revealed. [In the comic she died at age 99, not having actually found the immortality she sought in this episode.] She is not, as many people supposed, a gender-flipped John. However this was lost on many fans of the comic who really wanted to see the rather iconic John.
In a prequel written well after the original series ended it was revealed that Dream rejected Desire after they played a trick on him that lost him a lover (Dream's lovers usually come to very bad ends, as you saw in Episode 4). As a result Desire has never forgiven Dream for rejecting them, since that goes against their very nature. [Desire is properly androgynous and is properly referred to as they/them (as is that actor that played them).] However the antagonism is manifested in the original comics well before the actual/potential reasons for it are revealed.
I love the bit that the background conversation and complaints in the pub never really changes over the centuries.
Oh, and Hob was marking history papers in the pub. Guess what he had become?
These are two of my favourite early stories from the comic, that have been combined well together. Probably my favourite episode. So far.

Two of the most popular stories in one episode, a fitting bridge between larger, darker stories. Most people miss Chaucer in the first pub scene, as most people catch Shakespeare in the third. Even Lushing Lou is based on a real character. And no, Hob isn't pimping. He learned his lesson with the slavetrading.

  • @mbpoblet
    @mbpoblet Рік тому +3

In the books we got John in the twentieth century and Lady Johanna in the seventeenth, but here, since they'd gone with a female Constantine for the twentieth century to avoid any rights issues, they decided to use Jenna Coleman for both. I think it'd've been less confusing if they'd given the modern one a different name, though. Jenna Constantine in the twentieth century and Lady Johanna Constantine in this episode, for instance.

I think the adrenaline, the excitement of the show was mostly added to the show to feel more like a TV show. At least personally in the comic book I felt like every story was kind of detached, didn't dictate how you feel about it, didn't give you a character to sympathize with, it was like reading an ancient legend about gods and demigods where each act and event is symbolic and important, but not a blow by blow thriller. Adapting it to the show they added these ticking bombs (like the Corinthian or John Dee returning episode to episode) to make it feel more like any other show you've seen.

So yes, she is taking those people, and she can absolutely refuse to take someone. She doesn't typically CHOOSE how people die, though - that's the providence of her older brother, whom you've not met yet.

Editing to say i just saw your comment abour spoilers, this doesnt spoil any of the show, but does contain minor spoilers for the comics so i understand you block or delete this. About how easily Dream was captured, they didn't show it here but there's some evidence in the first episode that there is an unaccounted for time before he faced The Corintian, in the comics it's pointed out that he had just come back from a long, impossibly difficult journey that weakened him beyond imagination. They even eventually released a prequel comic showing said journey.

6:05 - that's actually not true...losing control of your bodily secretions in old age is a product of your poor choices in your younger days. Your quality of life as you approach death's door is a result of the decisions you made when you were younger.
30:40 - Dream wouldn't have gone to the meeting whether Dream was locked up or not, he wasn't thinking about Hob Gadling at all. It is in this time after his incarceration and subsequent journey afterwards that he realized that they truly were friends and that he was lonely.
Interesting how normally viewers don't like a lot of supposition and exposition, while y'all love it, but we get an episode filled with it here and Lee isn't feeling the episode the way that the majority is.

8:18 - Dream's Blue Steel face was a massive distraction that pulled my wife and I out of the show a number of times. I'm not sure if the actor's been in other things, but if he's relatively new, it might just be something he needs to work on. Luckily his other attempts at expressions are really good. He has a great smile, and when he wants to, he can come off as legitimately scary.

Tom Sturridge has been acting awhile - he was Robert Pattinson's roommate in college - but this is his highest profile role by far

Dream is just not much of an open character emotionally, and tends to sulk.

@@barbaros99 It's _extremely_ toned down when compared to the books. Compared to book Dream, Sturridge's Dream is a downright giddy and uncharacteristically cheerful fellow.
