Ths is my first time hearing the PTX version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and I totally agree with you, they are brilliantly talented and Freddie would be proud. Thank you for reacting to this amazing group.🫶👑💙
5 years they perfected that before they felt they were ready to do it justice.
PTX is always worth the wait...
#Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they always wanted to cover this song, but they feared that they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they were sure they were ready. That took them five years, but it was worth the wait - they were definitely ready.
In the early days of Pentatonix, after Epic reneged on the recording contract Pentatonix had "won" on _The Sing-Off,_ Pentatonix started posting to UA-cam; it was the only way they COULD publish their music. A lot of those early UA-cam videos show the five of them sitting on a couch, with the trio on the back of the couch and Avi and Kevin on the seat in front of them, just five very young people singing their hearts out, making their dream come true. Note that this is the configuration we see them in at the beginning and end of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is one reason the couch needs to move - it's taking Pentatonix (and us) on a trip down Memory Lane.
The more important reason the couch moves is that it's standing in for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole new generation to the genius of Queen by putting a tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the car's tape player.
The couch was motorized, and not very well balanced. (Note that when they're sitting on it their feet don't quite reach the ground. The little curtain thing on the bottom was added to hide the motor.) It kept trying to tip over during the filming and actually managed to throw Kevin off at one point. There was a small platform attached to the back so that Kirstin could climb on the couch from behind - Scott, being a foot taller than Kirstin, didn't need it.
When Mitch lies down on the couch, singing "Too late, My time has come," they're referring to Freddie Mercury's death (the foreshadowing was, of course, unintentional on Freddie's part; there's no way he could have known about AIDS, thank goodness). The other four are walking next to the couch to serve as Mitch's pall bearers.
Many people think the megaphone is distorting Mitch's voice to make it sound more like an electric guitar, but the megaphone actually has nothing to do with it. It wasn't turned on, and couldn't have distorted Mitch's voice even if it had been - it was just a megaphone. The electric guitar is all Mitch. Mitch happened to see the megaphone lying around on the set and thought it would make a cool prop, so it's been confusing people ever since.
During the "Bismillah" argument, note that Scott, whose range includes both bass and tenor registers, is actually singing along with both the high and low sides of the argument. Scott has said that this rapid switching is the hardest part of the song for him.
When the camera pans up to show us the starry night sky during Mitch's second guitar solo, it's meant as a tribute to Queen's lead guitarist, Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics.
The four shooting stars honor the four members of Queen.
When the camera pans back down to show Pentatonix lying on the couch together it's meant to recall the cover art for Queen's "Sheer Heart Attack" album.
And when this official video was first released, Brian May posted a link to it on all his social media accounts with the comment: "Enjoy."
Very thorough! Thanks for describing how hard they worked to make this a beautiful tribute!
They have done a number of "Behind The Scenes" videos that show how they work the magic behind the video - you can do a search - PTX behind the scenes - they are so interesting to watch. They work so hard on their arrangements!
Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights:
So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen.
Some of the moments paying respect were:
1.The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded),
2. Obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video,
3. The four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist,
4. The overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover.
The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do.
Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve.
They were indeed on an actual road and luckily, there actually is a behind the scenes for the making of this one that you can watch! The link is: ua-cam.com/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/v-deo.html
Also when Brian Mays heard it... he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”.
The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on UA-cam, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing.
My husband and I have seen them 4 times in the past two years and they sound just as amazing. Mitch is actually making the guitar sound!
I've been wondering whether Mitch's discovery of his inner guitar was the last piece they needed to convince them they could do this.
@@margretrosenberg420When we saw them on September 14, I couldn't keep my eyes off of Kevin..We had second row seats and Kevin was intense!!
@@kelleyturner6584 I love watching Kevin; have you noticed that he has a whole invisible drum kit? He reaches out with an invisible drum stick to hit an invisible snare drum, and you hear the snare drum. It quickly becomes surreal.
When Mitch needs an electric guitar he simply *becomes* the guitar, but Kevin plays the instruments.
I appreciate them singing bohemian rhapsody 👏👏. Me being a big Freddie and Queen fan I don’t like hearing different voices but Freddie’s voice . ❤️❤️
Keep plugging away, you'll get through those copyrights. Having it transparent like you did helps and also pausing after a verse helps as well. You can comment on what you just heard and even back it up a few seconds when you restart.
Thanks for the reaction!
I was JUST about to beg you to use headphones, and then you did!! 😅
I haven't watched yet. Freddie Mercury is my favorite singer. They have some big shoes to fill. I'll come back after. Back. Wow. I still like Freddie's version better, but these kids knock it out of the park! There are no musical instruments in this? (I looked it up). Immense talent. Thank you for sharing this. (I'm only midway, so impressed!)
I've seen them do this live. Mitch doesn't use the megaphone - it's just a prop. They're amazing in concert!
They do a very interesting Halloween version of My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music that might get you into a mood for pumpkins and trick-or-treat. Pentatonix has one extra special feature of each song they cover...their arrangements are specifically designed to be performed live on stage, so the amazing things you hear in each video, you get to relive again in concert.
Thank you thank you!! For a A Capella group to do this song is awesome. This group is so versatile. Feel free to stop the video if you want to comment. We are used to it. Absolutely stunning!! From a Pentaholic. Greetings from South Africa
No matter what Pentatonix song/video you choose, you will not be disappointed! They are awesome!!!
Thanks for your reaction. I like your love for acapella music. Check out Kissed from A Rose, Fact Punk Medley, the original Love Again or 90s Dance Medley. All are amazing.
I've seen the. Live 2xs they are Amazing ! My favorite Group by far
Don't worry about what you have to do to beat copyright. We've watched their videos so many times we can see them in our sleep. We're here to see your reaction. So blur, fade, pause...whatever you have to do - we won't mind.
Yes, they do this live, too! They worked for years to get this right for their performance. Brian May, himself, recommended this video on his page, when it came out! Keep being amazed!!
THIS IS WHY PTX IS THE NUMBER ONE ACAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD.
🎤🎤🎤
This band has so much more to hear, listen to & enjoy. They are over the top talented, with a little bit of genius added in. Incredible. There is another band to offer as well, that surely you would like. It is The Hu with a song named Wolf Totem. Check it out if & when you have a moment. Thank you again for sharing this one. =)
Glad you put your headphones on! I only THOUGHT I loved PTX until I started using them!
They usually pull this one out as one of their encores at concerts, so I've seen it live a couple of times. It's outstanding to see them do it! Actually, they just put out a teaser and I think they just filmed live versions of Hallelujah (which has already come out a couple weeks ago), Sound of Silence, and Bohemian Rhapsody, so I'll be looking for those two to come out, soon. They are three of their most popular UA-cam videos from the past and I think it's wonderful they are updating them with live version videos.
Pentatonix changed the acapella game!
The most successful acapella group. EVER.
Recommend their live performance video of Kiss From A Rose.

Brian May from QUEEN posted a link to this on Queen’s site, with one word…”ENJOY”…
Hope you react to more Pentatonix
100 percent freaking brilliant!
They just released another live version of this song a few hours ago.
Great reaction! This is a great tribute to Queen. When it pans to the stars, the four shooting stars are for the members of Queen and for Brian May who got a degree in astrophysics. Brian May gave this video a thumbs up. Awesome stuff. You should check out one of their originals, Sing. Upbeat, has a lot of fans and celebrities in it.
Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The part where Mitch is lying down on the couch and Kevin and Avi are walking beside it are to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddie's coffin . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there
are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for five or six years to get it where it is right now.
There are videos of live versions of Bohemian Rhapsody. There is a behind the scenes video for Bohemian rhapsody. Every so often Pentatonix will do a behind the scenes video
Great Reaction. We just couldn't hear you when you were talking during the video. This may help you get some of the PTX videos through the Sony copyright censors. Most reactors will blur or fade the video and stop the video mutiple times to comment. This will allow us to hear your reaction at different points in the video and increase the chance of you satisfying the censors. We don't mind you stopping the videos. We've all already heard these songs many times, and came here to listen to your opinion. We definitely want to hear what you have to say. I saw you put those headphones on. It sure enhances their sound, doesn't it? Especially the bass. I would like to suggest you listening to Daft Punk, their first Grammy win. But there are so many great PTX songs for you to choose from, you will never go wrong. Loved it.
Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy. You can see Mitch with the Freddie mustache doing Somebody to Love on a Queen special that was on ABC a few years ago.
Keep plugging on the copyright blocks - I think every reactor has them, and we really appreciate that you haven't given up yet!
Speaking of copyright blocks - one thing that seems to help avoid them is to stop the video periodically and comment (or just pause it for a few seconds). And speaking of commenting, it would really help (me, at least) if you paused the video for your comments, as I really can't make out what you're saying when the music is playing - it's volume is a little louder than yours (at least in this case), and I just can't quite make you out.
On Mitch's use of the megaphone - he doesn't need it to produce the sounds, it's literally just a visual cue for viewers of the music video to let them know who is making the sounds. In live performances, he just sings into the mic.
And yes, they do this live - there is an excellent version from the 2022 Hollywood Bowl livestream if you'd like to hear/see them do it live from a relatively recent concert.
you should hear them do a live version of KISS FROM A ROSE it is awesome and they have the best Christmas music ever you should listen to them do BORN TO BE WILD from their time on the Sing Off where it all started
Awesome Reaction!
Aren’t they just magical?!
I am a huge Pentatonix fan, but also a Freddy Mercury fan. When I first saw this I was missing something in Mitch's performance-- great vocals but he was young when they recorded this and maybe not super confident. But then who is going to be able to live up to Freddy? However, Pentatonix did a live version of this for their 2022 Hollywood Bowl show, and IMO Mitch was better than the studio version.
You should listen to Dimash Kudiabergen, Stranger, he is the greatest vocalist alive today.❤❤❤
Pentatonix does major upgrades, rather than covers.
Wear headphones or you won't get the full effect of Pentatonix. Also blur or overprint the videos, we know them well anyway, that way you won't have to mess with the audio.
Just a suggestion....stop the video when you want to comment. It is very hard to hear what you are saying when you talk over the video. The reason we watch your reactions is to hear what you think. Thanks for another PTX reaction and I hope you continue with them.
⚡⚡⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⚡⚡⚡⚡
You need to pause the video when you have something to say (plus it apparently helps with the video blocking if you stop periodically throughout) because we can't hear anything you say. Thanks!
can i request that you pause when you want to make a comment, or have the song a bit lower for us? i really wanna know what youre saying!!😭
Second best version....It doesn't quite reach the original.
Never will. They are A Capella and it is absolutely stunning
Home free is not even close to ptx
Nor are any of the others. They all pale in comparison. PTX is the GOAT!
