Beautiful video and I cannot wait to see more you did a great job on that katana and thank you for letting me to see a master and work making a beautiful sword thank you Sensei 😘😇😸
This seems a much different process compared to what you see in other docs with the traditional sword smiths. There seems much less folding of the steel, and it didn't look like a soft core was wrapped in the harder high carbon steel. Could be victims of editing. Still an interesting process.
To make the katana sharp & strong he needs to do the traditional way, combining the heart and body of katana and making the tip of it by not cutting but forming it
This is not a tutorial to teach you how to make a katana at home. It's a document of the work of a blacksmith making a sword. The man is as important as the object.
I'm sorry if this is obvious, but if this is how long a katana is made now, then how can you provide an army katanas back in the past? Are the katanas just not as good for the low ranks or do they just have so many people making them?
Seems Like the generation before did something great an like the current times if the 21st centary where everything is just automated and Robots everywhere
I didn't see him do the combining of heart and body of the katana, he just directly made the katana that's why I'm sure that it's not strong...because if you follow the traditional way combining the heart and body of the katana will make it stronger that it can't be easily brake
Probably wont get an answer but i was wondering what the green colored flux is made of? At least i think it was flux because he applied before each heat. Awesome video BTW.
Did he cut the tip with a chop saw? That’s awesome! I cut my tips but that’s because it’s easier, I’m sure he could have easily forged a tip. I like how he cut it and then rolled it to the other edge.
Old af comment but I'm gonna leave this here anyway: Traditionally they would hot cut the tip with a chisel and bend it the other way. Since the sword was made of high carbon steel on one side and low carbon steel on the other side, cutting it and bending it back ensures that the high carbon side follows the curve of the tip right up to the point. Maybe it would not be necessary in this case as it seems the sword is monosteel. I definitely prefer cutting my stock at an angle all the time if I have to cut it anyway. Much easier to form the tip from an angle than from a flat end.
@@freshlymemed5680 what I meant was he would of taken a lot longer if he had had to hammer out the steel instead of pushing it in and out of a press which does all the work for you.
it has to do with the way the steel on the edge is placed, you don't want a really soft tip hence why they reverse it, so wen you stab someone, your tip doesn't warp
I’m not a blacksmith but to me the raw metal seems very hard even when cherry red. This metal does not change significantly even when approaching the thickness of the sword. Mild steel moves when this hot, mild steel it is not!
Stephen Miller - They're careful not to forge too hot in order to avoid a lot of scale and decarb as well as to keep a fine grain structure. Sure it takes longer to forge, but overall it's better for the steel.
Seems Like the generation before did something great an like the current times if the 21st centary where everything is just automated and Robots everywhere

How many years , sensei I did you apprentice at your craft , sir .
Cutting the point and reversing the tip adds strength to it
Nope, you're wrong
To make the katana sharp & strong he needs to do the traditional way, combining the heart and body of katana and making the tip of it by not cutting but forming it
If only the cameraman realized that the point of the video is to observe how the katana is made, NOT how the blacksmith's face looks as he's doing it
I like it. The face shots remind us that this is an incredibly painstaking process that requires an ungodly amount of patience.
Was thinking the same thing. Was the cameraman in love, maybe?
Because everything you need to know is in the eyes
