- Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. OK, so this, again, is a little different. We all make mistakes and I'm not immune. I take our rollback (tilt tray) unit #15, our Peterbilt 337 with a Miller Industries Century LCG12 to recover not one, but two trucks that are stuck at the bottom of a slick, muddy hill. One truck got stuck, then the other truck got stuck trying to get the first truck out. Guess who else gets stuck...ME!!! I have to call Mike to come rescue me. Also, it starts pouring rain while we are working. Typical Murphy!! Just gotta keep saying "I love my job". Oh well, again, it is what it is. Make the best of it, learn from it, and move forward.

Not bad recovery but with a rollback you never get stuck Al you had to do is push yourself out with the deck
Tried it....didn't work. Just pushed into the mud. Even placed wood blocks under the lift to help and they just pushed into the ground. I did attempt self-recovery before calling Mike. I didn't show that in the video, because I don't like using that method and I didn't want people to think that it was an acceptable method, because, according to the manufacturer, it is not. @@JohnHallgren They probably didn't. They also probably didn't notice all the wood we had placed under and around the tires to try to get myself free. Oh well. Some people just have to give their 2 cents worth.....
That`s why y`all have a fleet of trucks. If you don`t go off the path once in a while it gets boring. The importance of staying on the path is a good lesson.
Ah my golf course, my golf course. It has so many deep ruts now. Guess I'll have to get the greens crew to work now when the rain stops.
Ron I know the camera is not doing any justice on how steep the hill is. I drove wrecker for many years from a 1 ton up to 30 ton and loved doing recoveries but when your done and everyone is happy, you still have to put all the extra rigging away. Lol sometimes taking longer then the recoveries. Take care be safe and God bless.

17:38 The "greatest rigging job" is explicitly defined as the following criteria: 1) Nobody gets hurt. 2) No equipment or vehicles get damaged. 3) No new stuff has to get bought. 4) Everything ends up where its supposed to be. 5) You get paid on time. Looks like this qualifies.
Ron has the added requirement to set a good example most of the time.

As soon as I saw you put the J-hooks on the front of 15, I said "Hey, that one's backwards". But you caught it. How the heck you coil that extra length of cable without it becoming a tangled mess is a marvel. Ron, I'm old enough to be your dad, and since he's not around to tell you, please let me give you some advice. You are breathing hard on some of these videos.... too hard. For the sake of your family, hire a $15.00 an hour kid to learn the trade and do all the lugging for you. Win Win for everyone!

@Rags722 I do have a couple of those young-ins'. I wasn't expecting this job to turn into what it did or I would have brought one along...LOL. The customers were good help too, though. It's just a lot for an "old man" going up and down that slippery hill. As they say, "I ain't as young as I used to be". Thanks and God bless.

I have a grandson I use for a swamper to lug gear around when needed.. after 12 back surgeries it's a miracle I can do half of what I do but crawling up and down hills is WAY over my limit
Skid steer with a winch would be handy for a job like that. Maybe some dealer would give a great deal on a good quality used one.

Except for the fact that he'd be doing it out in the cold rain and can't take his attention off the vehicles he's recovering to inspect the cable as it's spooling up...
Ron tends to do the respool once he gets back to base. No point doing that in front of the customers.
Well, all I can say is when it rains there, IT RAINS!
Thanks for posting it Ron, we all get stuck sometimes trying to help people out that's our job but you knew you could easily be winched out if you got stuck that's the difference.

I know you have a lot of experience and your dad did also, but. I got stuck like this in a rollback. I had only used it about 3 times, always drove a small wrecker. Well, I called dispatch and an older driver came out in a wrecker. He simple got out and used the bed of the rollback to walk it out of the mud!! I never forgot that! That was about 30 years ago.

A Ford, pulling a Peterbilt, that's pulling a GMC, that's pulling a Dodge. With all that going on, everyone forgot about the trailer that's still at the bottom of the hill...which is what the guys were TRYING to pull in the first place lol!

they needed go drag the trailer over and hitch it up, then drag the dodge up to where it could hook to the gmc with the trailer behind it...... those rollbacks have major pulling power.... ron just needed to park on the gravel 5 ft to the side.... wouldn't change the angle of pull much for that length of line

You might try spray painting the last few wraps of the cable a different color (maybe dayglo orange or high vis yellow?) so that you can quickly tell at a glance that you're where you need to stop... sort of like using gradated line when fishing that changes colors every so often to let you know how much you have out. Anytime you do any sort of anything that has mechanical stuff with it, you should have a leatherman tool or gerber on your belt. Seems like it should've been a job for the Western Star. And the Chevy took off with your green strap still on his bumper..
In the military when one recovery asset calls another recovery asset, due to first asset getting stuck, that requires the first asset to buy the second asset a case of their drink of choice.

WOW, what a sticky stuck situation. But I was super impressed by all the help that the customers provided you, I appreciate that. And it was nice that Micky was able to help pull you out as well. 4-trucks involved in the end, all out, back on pavement, and nobody hurt, so it was a good day. Yes getting soaked sucks, but could have been worse. Thanks Ron!

Been there and done that it's no fun. Try using the wheel lift and blocks to get the rear wheel off the ground and under some wood. U can also extend the lift and push it forward that way once back wheels are off the ground
Tried....unfortunately it didn't work. I just didn't show it in the video. If you look closely towards the end of the video, you can see where I attempted and just dug into the ground. You can also see the wood we attempted to get under the tires. Thanks for watching and God bless.

I've known this all along that a Chevy has to pull a Ram out of the mud, which is nonsense because it's been the other way many times. A most interesting video that not many people can see.

Well, mistakes happen. And this one only cost time and thus money - the companies money, I'd assume, as I am quite sure you only put the fee for the rollback onto the bill, not the extra help to get your rollback out :D As long as nobody gets hurt and the end result is fine - well, it's entertainment for us as well.
He’s just lucky that MidWest towing showed up for the second tow, I’ve heard good things about them!
I'd have charged for everything that was used tbh. The job duration (billable man-hours) was halved by coming up with the idea of linking them together, and it'd be unrealistic to expect to foresee that the entire area was a quagmire.

@@tncountryboy06 communication with the customer and asking them “what’s fair” goes a long way. Especially when the customer sees what you had to do to complete the job. Given the chance to make their own decision, most customers are fair and honest. When a job goes outside the “normal scope” I quite often tell the customer to pay what you think is fair, and it’s rare that I go away disappointed. I’m not in the tow business, I dig and repair water and sewer lines but customer service is customer service, same principles apply here.

oh boy...very ''lovely'' weather and soft mud....that was ''dream day'' to workind....but lucky is that,at only light unit is stuck....not example rotator unit....well still everuthing fine....

I had a friend that got a pickup, tractor, dump truck and a Cat dozer stuck as each was trying to pull the others out. It was interesting watching another dozer with a winch pulling things out while the trees were swaying and the ground rippling in a 20 acre area. They had found a large peat bog. Ron everyone gets stuck in this industry. A lot of times you can tip your bed back and push yourself out with your wheel lift. I've been stuck many times and that was able to get me out.
I hope they didnt overcharge you for the call out to come and rescue you!
