- This ship was used by Wat Tambor, the Foreman of the Techno Union, and became easy targets for LAAT gunships during the Battle of Geonosis. See how the Hardcell-class interstellar transport compared to the Pelta-class frigate, X-Wings, Y-Wings, TIE Defender, and other Star Wars ships. I think i have some form of PTSD, all i can hear is a clone saying over the radio "Destory the Techno Unit Ships" during the battle of geonosis.

According to NASA a spacecraft needs to attain 40,000 kmh or roughly 25,000 mph to escape orbit. My best bet is that the hardcell hits 2,483 mph straight vertical and the lower speed is if it has to travel horizontally. Since the ship is making repeated planet falls it makes sense that they would stress decreasing the time spent escaping orbit to use its (relatively) high speed hyperdrive. It would also make sense as to how many of the hardcells escaped so quickly and why they were so rushed to take them down.
On that topic of speed, a problem I have with Star Wars is it unrealistic speeds, like with the gozanti there are some prop planes that move faster, and the tie defenders 1,680 KMH, well guess what modern fighter jets are several times faster and they don’t even travel in the vacuum of space, nor do they have intertidal dampeners.

Easy answer to the speed question: Two different engines/settings. The faster speed being in-atmosphere is the result of it adding air to the fuel mixture for a much more powerful burn, while in space it's limited to what it can carry with it, and uses a different mixture or even a different, more easily stored, fuel that's much less efficient at producing thrust.
nikolai60 No real rockets use an air/fuel mixture. Rocket fuel has its own oxidizers.
Well, I never said rocket, I said engine, and Star Wars has it's fair share of oddball ways to move about space. There's no reason to think they have the same limitations as us, so a hybrid engine that can use air for a power boost is well within reason. Or, as I said, two different fuel types altogether, one that needs air and one that doesn't.

Well possibility too, but even todays rocket engines has diferent ISP in different attlitudes, thats one of the reasons we have multiple staged rockets
It could also be that it was supposed to actually be designed after real rockets, which would explain the launch speed. An in-universe explanation is the legends fight speed if often describing a ship without shield shaping to get less air resistance. It could be the Hardcell was simply design to be able to fly in atmosphere at speed without shield shaping.

the speed disparity could be with the use of chemical engines for vertical take off then ions in space as it does share characteristics to rockets like Saturn 5. or they just wanted a large number so they could create cool mental image of this thing blasting off.

I think its simple cooling cooling is easier in atmo than in space meaning the hard cell could book it in atmo and have all that heat just be transferred into the atmosphere where is in space it cant as easily

This is a Star Wars ship that looks the most similar to modern day rockets 🚀 and we might be able to build this ship in the near future.
Yet, another entry in the database of STAR WARS knowledge in my brain, and fodder for discussion and debate during a weekend stay at a CON suite for the next sci-fi convention I attend! 👍

Going completely out on a limb with a speculation here (and most of what I am about to say is from memory, so take it with grains of salt), but the speed difference could be due to the efficiency of the engines. Some rocket engines are better used a a certain altitude than others. An example is the engines used on the Saturn V's first stage which worked good for sea level, but once they approached space the engine burn through it's fuel less effectively. The next stage's engine cone allowed for more efficient flight in space.
With all that said, Star Wars seems to love using ion engines (in some cases they more resemble vasimr engines, but I can let that slide), so everything I just said probably doesn't matter.
No. Every rocket engine becomes more efficient with an increase in altitude. It's just that underexpansion of exhaust gas doesn't maximize the efficiency gain you get from climbing.
Reminds me of one on my first space engineers builds. The Tel myco 9. Mine had a more bulbous head, but it looked almost identical below the living quarters.

Love the speed difference between Canon and Legends.
While in Legends. This ship could travel in atmosphere at Supersonic speeds.
Yet in Cannon. It travels at Transonic Speeds.
I'd like to add something from the Star Wars Guide To Starships on this vessel. The Hardcell was infamous for being extremely fuel inefficient and causing horrendous levels of pollution when it took off and landed on a planet's surface. The Techno Union were completely aware of these facts and not only did they not care, they actually considered this a status symbol, showing off their wealth and position by causing serious damage to the enviroments of other races, who just had to shut up and take it, or have the Techno Union's droid army kick in their door.
There's no up or down in space so it wouldn't need to reorient it's gravity in space. In that respect it would be the same as the Rocenate from the Expanse.
For normal use of the layout of the ship, like if you have a table horizontal to the floor, it would be good to have gravity point down, and because some of the details on it's interior seem to contradict I figured that would fix it, but I see your point too.

Especially since the republic knew systems where braking away from the republic, and joining an alliance theirs simply NO WAY any government no matter how much your running wouldn’t launch a full intelligence operation into the separatists on what they where up to, what they where planing what capabilities where, there military strength systems they control where they got their resources from what the production output was and who was there leadership.

Marcus W well for starters Geonosis is a far outer rim planet. On top of that, Geonosis was never a part of the Republic; completely independent until Dooku and the CIS showed up. Before the war, Geonosis exported droids of all kinds. So a large amount of transport ships would seem like a normal occurrence for the planet. Also before the war, the Republic wasnt at all invested in searching for hostiles. The First Battle of Geonosis was purely a Jedi rescue mission that quickly evolved into a full blown battle and happened without the Republic Senate knowing of it until after it was all said and done. It was after this battle that the two sides declared war on each other.
Launching a full invasion of a planet to save 3 people it’s tactically unsound, in reality they would be considered acceptable losses.
Now of-course knocking geonosis war production out of the war would be a blow to the CIS,

My guess on the speed disparity would be that the atmospheric speed is only for going straight up, ballistically, and anything else it can do is more proportional to other ships, especially considering they just would want to launch clear and hyper away, perhaps their repulsors more or less just making the things about neutrally-buoyant if loaded. Other performance may not have been a big thing.

A simple way to explain disparity of speed performance in/out atmosphere could be that the engine use said atmosphere to propel itself , throught ionising it along a field arround the ship or simply heating it with a reactor and vent it at the back of the ship, all of that with not impressives (void) engines.
The Gunship levels in The Clone Wars had you being tasked with taking several Techno Union ships down. Also, Count Dooku carried the Force Harvester on a Techno Union ship when it was leaving Raxus Prime.

One possibility for why the ship can move so fast on the ground and not so fast in space could be that, like earth ships, it has engines that are optimized for atmosphere over space. Engines like the F-1 engines used by the Saturn V's first stage work well in an atmosphere, but when the pressure of the surrounding air becomes low enough, the exhaust gasses spread out and the engines lose a lot of their power. Most engines in Star Wars are some kind of advanced ion engine, but if the Techno Union were using old, cheap engines in order to make these ships as inexpensive as possible, that might account for it. Of course, why they would do this when even mundane T-16s use ion drives makes no sense, but it does explain why the ships lose so much thrust when they're in space.

While I don't know much but that ship is a good target while grounded (especially in Clone Wars based video games)
It's possible that the ship could use the atmosphere as a way to rapidly burn fuel using an alternative propulsion method. When in space the ship wouldn't constantly be surrounded by easily accessible gases to waste for the quick speed boost in the same way.
All that tech but it gets recked by one rocket XD

Old video, but the reason, I feel is that these Transports use something more similar to modern Solid Fuel Boosters to break atmosphere, which can reach speeds in excess of 5000 Miles Per Hours simply to be able to make orbit.
Modern Ion Engines are efficient, but they also don't produce all that much thrust overall we can't use them to break atmosphere yet, if it's even possible at all. It's possible that, with the advanced technology available, most ships opt to use Ion Engines (Which in the Star Wars Universe use some kind of booster mechanism to increase thrust) to save on fuel, as that, when often times combined with Repulsor Lifts can do a good job at something akin to a gradual ascent, but, with the atmospheric speeds of these ships, it's clear that it's not as fast as even today's rockets because of it. Maybe the name is what reveals that true purpose? Hardcell, which could also mean something like Solid Fuel Cell, and I think we can come to a fairly reasonable head canon explanation that's supported by at least *some* evidence.

I never knew what these were until this video, I would've never thought they were ships, I always assumed they were something like a power generator of sorts
So the Techno Union was at last not dumb enough to let there Ships be controlled by droids like the trade federation did in clone wars series.
But they build video game like weakspots so they are dumb anyway.
If star wars portrayed droids realistically having robots would be way better than organics.

@@ATP2555ify hacking a droid is easier said than done. Also a true self improving AI would actively create programs and fight back. Also most modern military equipment will get disabled by EMPs. Now let's look at the benefits of droids: no need to eat or sleep, can self replicate, and can have reaction times greater than jedi

I don't think the Hardcell used re-oriented gravity fields, but was rather built like a ship with thrust-directional gravity. With the front of the ship being at the top, and the thrusters being at the bottom. It would make sense for a ship of this size and shape, being rather cylindrical, compared to the Slave I's flat build.
I think why it has such a difference in speed could be due to how much energy could be being put into the shields after leaving the atmosphere of a planet

Many space engines have different efficiency ratings in vacuum. Some even lose power when operating in a vacuum

The difference could be the old "top speed through atmosphere with shields up" from Legends. For instance the Delta-7's top speed in atmosphere WITH shields UP was 15,000 kph.

Theory for why in atmosphere speed is so much higher than in space speed: the engines are designed for in atmosphere functioning. Perhaps they act similarly to a hybridized turbine/thruster. In atmosphere, you have the thrust of both parts, while in space the turbine is rather useless. While this doesn't account for the sheer amount of discrepancy, but it could account for why the atmos speed is faster.
Another theory: the hardcell was designed pre-war, yes? So what did it do? My guess- it was nothing more than a interplanetary space elevator. Its sole job was to land, get the product, exit atmosphere, hyperjump to the destination, then land. If this were the case, the most important qualities for this ship to have would be exit velocity (which it has in spades) and hyperdrive speed (which it also has, since it has a class 1). It didn't need to be fast in space because most of its life wouldn't be spent there (if my theory is correct, of course.)
I wonder why we didn't see many of these in the clone wars, I was hopin to see them in that blue and grey confederate drab

I always thought that these things were some generators or something like that.
My theory is that the ship needs to go so fast so that it can get out of the atmosphere but it's kind of like ahead flank on modern ships so you overheat your engines if you leave it on for too long so you only use it when getting out of the atmosphere because gravity and atmosphere are hard to get through but it only activates for a second so then the atmosphere sucks away the velocity making it able to just barely escaped that by the time it leaves the atmosphere or goes up into thinner atmosphere it runs out of speed so then it's stuck at 40 of the units used for measuring speed in space I'm not going to try to spell it

The engines might use chemical reactions that are aided while in atmosphere, while in space they simply jet pressurized, unburnt fuel.
Perhaps the Greater takeoff speed is a result of the Techno Union needing their ship to get through the super dense atmosphere of their planet in a reasonable amount of time, a slower ship would take much longer and might not get up through the atmosphere as easily.

@@MetaNerdzLore Penny pinching my friend, plain and simple penny pinching. If you save a penny on every dollar because you maximized your fuel efficiency and you're dealing with millions of dollars worth of cargo you'll be saving a huge amount of money that can be put to use in other areas. In the Techno Union's eyes it's probably enough that their shipments are on time rather than ahead of schedule.
Closer to home, most Semi-trucks don't go faster than 80mph (Or the kmh equivalent) while shipping, mainly because going faster would cost more money and only cut delivery time by a few minutes; same with Oceanic transport vessels.
I think the Techno Union is a more level headed and practical organization, going with whatever works best regardless of appearances. The Trade Federation on the other hand seems like an organization more invested in posturing and shows of force in addition to wanting to maximize their profits.
One cares about results while the other cares about theatrics. You can see it in the way the two organization's representatives dress too.
Don't know for sure but that's just my take on it.

Its could have some kind of scram jet engine or hybrid rocket jet engines. This gives it a masive atmospheric ISP but is useless in zero preasure. Its ion engiens are not as powerful. Its take off velocity is bled off when acending as it fights its way out of the gravity well.
And no you would have no need to alter the gravity plane. If anything having your gravity alined with the ships aceleration makes runing it easier and cheeper.

Maybe those arent engines and, instead, are rocket boosters that need to be refueled at every planet it lands on.
It has 6 massive rockets that help it get off any planet its on regardless of the planets size, gravitational pull, and atmosphere. However these rockets burn through all of their fuel on takeoff and the ship then relies on 6 smaller engines that can barely maintain the weight of the ship.
