Big shout out to Craig @ toastyfox.co.uk/ for keeping me warm, you legend!!!
The rain has been terrible where I live, none stop for 3 weeks. It cleared up for an evening and was due to start again the next day, so I decided to go spend a night in the woods at a tiny abandoned house.
I've visited it a few times in previous videos, and I have always wanted to go spend a whole night there. So I jumped at the chance.
I was wildly unprepared, it was very last minute and ended up being a lot of fun.
The abandoned house sits in the middle of a Yorkshire forest, deep into a valley. It is really remote but such an incredible spot. I spent a lot of time as a kid playing around there and it seems significant.
My plan is to try find the owner, and get them to let me do it up and turn it into a Bothy, for passing travellers to rest for a while. I think that would be great.
I hope you enjoy, I really did.
    Thanks you legends!
    WT

@wanderingturnip You are such a beautiful soul. Young man loves nature and houses. I have so much in common with you. I really do enjoy the work you do! You are the blessing from God to us! There are no many Young men who will be interested to do the job you do. I really do appreciate it very much so. I've had recently discovered your channel. The only thing puzzled me was? How did you decide to call yourself, the Wandering Turnip? Are you don't want to be addressed on your real name? If you don't mind, what is your name? I've already subscribed to your channel! Take care of yourself in that house? There are no facilities in it. I do hope that you will bring us many more an interesting stories in your videos? Thank you so much darling!

    David,
Loved the film about the “little house”.
I know that area well and often walked past there with the dog. Apologies for this rather long post but I thought you might be interested to know a bit about its history.
This homestead is called Beverley End and was inhabited by the Bentley family through most of the 19th century and presumably earlier. It would appear from a brief scurry through the archives that there were three brothers. The first is so far unidentified but he was married to Mary; Henry was born in 1799 and John was born in 1806. It would appear that they were all born at Beverley End.
In the 1841 census the elder Bentley brother has died leaving Mary with four children, Hannah born 1818; James born 1823; John born 1822; Mary born 1841. As there is such a big gap between the last two I’m guessing that Mary was someone else’s.
The other household comprises the middle Bentley brother, Henry, who is married to Betty Roberts. They have five children, all girls, Hannah born 1827; Sarah 1828; Elizabeth 1830; Alice 1833 and Mary 1835.
All those of working age are employed as weavers in the cotton industry.
The third Bentley brother is John Bentley who is unmarried but not at this stage living at Beverley End.
For reasons which are not clear Beverley End appears to escape being recorded in the 1851 census.
However, we find Betty and her family living in Lydgate (Todmorden). Betty along with Sarah, Alice and Mary. Also living with them is Thomas Roberts who is Betty’s child by a previous relationship. Thomas was baptised in Heptonstall in 1819 and his father is recorded as being presumed to be William Greenwood late of Heptonstall and now in the British Army. Whether he joined to escape his fate or whether he was simply on leave we do not know. But clearly a cad and a bounder, nay, a dirty dog.
At the time of the 1861 census Mary is still at Beverley End with Hannah and James. Hannah has had two illegitimate children, Judith born in 1843 and Mary Allen born in 1856. Mary is recorded as being the housekeeper at the age of 68 and Hannah, James and Judith are all employed as cotton power loom weavers. We can assume that their earlier weaving activity was as handloom weavers.
The third Bentley brother John is now living at Beverley End and is employed in a local stone quarry as a quarry man. He is unmarried and as far as I can see never marries.
In 1861 Betty and her family are still living in Lydgate. With her are two of her five daughters. Alice now 27 a cotton winder; Mary 25, a cotton weaver and Henry who is Betty's grandson and therefore born to either Alice or Mary.
In 1871 at Beverley End we have Hannah living with her brother James along with her two children Judith and Mary Allen. John is occupying another household and is now employed as an outdoor worker.
By 1881 Hannah and James are still there along with Judith who has had an illegitimate child Emma Barker who is four years old.
By the time of the next census in 1891 it would appear that Beverley End had been abandoned as I cannot find any trace. James and his niece Judith are living in the household of William Barker over at Dean Bottom, Duke Street. Barker is aged 35, a farmer and cotton weaver. We can presume that one of this family, perhaps he or his father, fathered Emma Barker.
There are without doubt descendants of these people still living in Todmorden but genealogy works backwards so no way of knowing who they are. Perhaps someone will read this and claim them.

Liked the poem; have you visited Byron's ancestral home Newstead Abbey, with it's huge monument to his favourite dog? "Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the virtues of Man without his Vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human Ashes, is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog". He also kept a bear and practiced indoor pistol shooting. An early Russel Brand who, incidentally, got his idea of being verbose from reading Dickens.
Anyhow: "The cock is crowing, and I must be going, as I can no more."

I so relate to your weather rant round the fifteen minute mark. The winter in this country grinds my gears and it's always a pisser when it's rainy for prolonged periods in summer, because it's bad for our physical and mental health not to get a good bit of sunshine when possible.

Only just subbed. And going a bit backwards. Love the channel. This reminds me of the days when we used to build "dens", in the local woods, when we were kids. We used to take bottles of water and jam butties. Lol.

Have a couple of your mates help you bring some galvanize up there to fix that roof and let the floor and walls dry out a bit. This could be your annual summer getaway! Nice video man! Ideal location.

This has to be the wettest July ever, and June was so warm and sunny. What you said about it soon being August, then 1 month and summer is finished, is exactly what we were saying after I had been 2 hours, in my raincoat, in non-stop rain, pulling weeds at my veg garden. 😭😭😭

Loved this! You inspire me to visit nature, the woods and the countryside! We have a nature reserve nearby called Fingringhoe Wick and I've just visited, first time since I've lived here for years, definitely want to get back to nature. I see why you like that little building, it would be really great if you could buy it and restore it, what a great project! I'm also excited for you that you are doing this full-time now, good for you, nothing ventured nothing gained. You will make a big success of your channel and you have so many supporters. Best channel on UA-cam! By the way were you a little scared there when night came? Lol 😂 I would be. All the best, Jane 😊

If you do france again, try the french/german borders, theres still bunkers up there complete with slits for machine guns that you could spend a night in , we have them in my area too, mostly left over from when the germans occupied my village
