Can you show VSCode with a vertical split? typically on a smaller device (incl my 15") id hide the project file list (cmd+b), turn off the minimap (View -> Show Minimap) and use it with a vertical split, e.g. code on left, test code on right. Often with the integrated terminal at the bottom too.
In the Apple Store with VSCode, I can tell you from actual hands-on experience that the 16" provides much better screen ergonomics than the 14". BTW, I was using 19pt font size on both the 14" and 16". Also, I closed the minimap and file navigator. In short, the 16" is perfect for vertical split-screen development but the 14" would require one to do a lot more horizontal scrolling. I have Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro and I plan to go with a 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM, 32 GPU, and 4 TB SSD.
I did the same. Reason for me is mostly frontend. It’s very convenient to have bigger areas to work with in responsive web. Even when I do more backend stuff I tend to use lots of terminal windows, and it’s nice to be able to view many of them at the same time. I have external monitors, but I really value the times when I don’t have access to them. Like in meetings or other stuff.
What would be nice - and I haven't found any clip anywhere.. is a good test and test of how these sizes affect when you work on places other than a desk. Couch, on the bed etc.. would nice to actúally see what it looks like.. how's the balance difference when the laptop is on your lap for example.. etc etc
It absolutely doesn’t, no need to question it. I have 3 high refreshing rate high res monitors plugged in and the bottom doesn’t even get warm no matter what I do. My old 2019 gets toasty as soon as I plug in a 4K display and it gets really loud.
Also to answer you question, the new shape is more uniform where as the old one tapers off, they are about the same thickness. The air intake on the new ones are a lot larger. I think apple wants the laptop to run without audible fan noise 99% of the time
Have you done any battery tests between the two machines? Really curious to know how much battery gets used doing things like compiling large projects, basic vs code usage, etc.
Also, don't forget that Apple Care + is more expensive on the 16" as well. I am really happy with the 14" 10/16 core 1TB unit. I have been using a Lenovo P53 with a xeon and 4k OLED for some time, and the macbook is faster in most uses, in some dramatically, but I get more than 3.5 hours using it unplugged...
I guess Alexander has never experienced extended crunch times. :) Quite a few times I've done *really* long coding sessions, with my longest one being close to 32 hours. Of course, I was near power the entire time, so wouldn't need a 21 hour battery life, but still: obnoxiously long coding sessions do happen. :o
I'm torn between 14" and 16", as well as torn between M1 Pro 10 core and M1 Max. I am leaning for the 14. I hate the fact the menu breaks with the notch on the 14, because I do have a lot tools that have many menu items and many status icons. I do want portability, because I'll code on top of a mountain or coffee shops. I also have an ultrawide at home. So maybe smaller screen isn't a problem at home. I don't know anymore. What about performance, I'm a web dev and I've got docker running and couple of servers running too. So maybe it's more Ram intensive rather than an M1 Pro 10 core or M1 max?
If you are at home most of the time for work, then just go 14" and use the monitor. 14" is going to be better on the go, but if you travel a lot and need the extra real estate, then go for the 16". Other than that, I think the cooling is another issue... 16" does stay cooler than the 14" but this is only for heavy CPU tasks like rendering 3d scenes.
are you running VMs and with current work flow have you checked your memory usage? TBH I was most concerned about that with multiple environments open, too many tabs, and VM if you need it but memory swap seems to handle it pretty effectively. I've seen comparisons betwen 16 and 32 gb and higher still has memory swap occurring. I think most people can still run the base model 14 with a heavy workflow and be more efficient than most of the systems that devs are currently using.
As nice as the new machines are, I'm far more interested in an M1 Max mini. I need lots of screen for development, and I far prefer a mechanical keyboard like a Happy Hacker. I hate looking down at a screen, and if I want sound, I'd much rather hook up some real studio monitors.
Exactly. That's why I consider a laptop for pure mobility. Why get a larger screen in a laptop that I won't use for very extended periods of time? Those extended sessions will most likely be on my desktop, which is powerful, has a very large screen, a comfortable chair, a mechanical keyboard...etc. I want a laptop for mobility.
I have my MacBook plugged in to two large curved monitors. Almost never have it out / open it. 🤷🏻♂️ But if I’d have to take it somewhere, no problem. A mini has no advantage despite price.

You're always been my go-to youtuber -- when in comes to laptops, since all of your reviews are related to programming. :D. Keep it up man! Keep on making cool contents.
Great Video! About the notch, if we use background with black colour(at least on top part is black), then the top bar is entirely black and the notch is not very obvious. The problem you shared remains though.
I watched your video twice and didn't find the conclusion of your video's title... did you choose the 14" or 16" MacBook Pro for software dev? I'm guessing the 16".
I'm really in doubt here.. as a dev, we usually work in full screen mode for apps anyway (VSCode, Browser), so is it really really that much better with 16" vs 14". If you cannot see all your lines of code without scrolling, you should probably refactor anyway :)
I got the 16 inch because my local apple store only had the 10 core m1 pro in 16 inch and the 8 core m1 pro in 14 inch. I wanted to 10 core with a preference for the 14 inch. I went for the 16 for the 10 core. This thing feels like its full of concrete.
Thanks for the real world review! I am typing this on a 2018 Macbook pro 13" The system is great and I hands down love the trackpad but the keyboard is lacking for any serious typing, screen is too small, the font too tiny AND increasing the font messes with the layout on the screen. Is the 14" any better - noticeably better than the 13"? Or do I need to go the 16" ? I like the 14 but I am replacing a desktop soon and need something portable with a keyboard for typing, decent default font size and a display that looks "proper" where I do not have to strain my eyes to read. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing and all the time and creativity you put to make the videos. I would like to know your perspective, it's not clear to me if you're happy or satisfied with the new MacBook Pros, looks like in real world there is no too much difference for your workflow. with the M1. Hey, Alexander! Thanks for another great video! How about the specs on CPUs and GPUs for a developer? Do you have any idea on the differences between M1 Pro and Max (base models), development wise? I mean, is the difference that big between these two processors? I understand that it all depends on what I'll be coding, but maybe someone could help. Thanks again!
What kind of coding are you doing? If it’s mainly web stuff then really the M1 MacBook Air is more than sufficient, or the base Pro. If you are looking at heavy data science or machine learning work then that’s likely where the max will come in.
@@benpearce2044 Thanks for the reply! I won't be using it for data science. I'll mainly be using it to run some VMs and Flutter. So I think that M1 Max (base model) will be overkill, right? The Air should do the job, but I'm looking for the better webcam, more than one external display and higher DPI of the Pro (I'll be coming from a 4K Dell, so I got used to that amazing resolution 😄)
@@FelipeViaud the display is fantastic I have to say, my 14inch 24gpu max arrived earlier today and it is fantastic to work on! 😁 The M1 pro chip with be great for you, only thing is how many VMs will you be looking to run simultaneously? As they do require a decent amount of memory to run. 🙂
@@benpearce2044 Once you work on a high DPI display, it's a pain to go back to a FHD display 😁 About the VMs, I think that 16GB RAM would be fine for now. But here the 14inch is costing almost 1.5x the 13inch (seems a bit too much for me) How much difference would it create on a day to day life? Is it worth it? Looking for your suggestions. Thanks.
If you are going for an M1 base chip get the max book air - the MacBook Pro M1 is not worth the extra money. Then M1 MacBook Air is fantastic for android/Xcode development work for the price.
Hey, also an Android Developer here. If you decide to buy an M1 mac, definitely buy 16gb ram. I recommend air over pro cuz there are almost no differences between them and air is cheaper.
Just wondering if the palmrest vibrates when you play music through the speakers? Apple Macbook Air 2014 does making very unpleasant feeling when the one keeps their hands down on the keyboard.
Would you be able to run a couple of ML related benchmarks on the new machines, Alex? Maybe GeekbenchML? I’d be interested to know how the Max chips compare to the Pro. My 24core max arrived today and Id be interested to know how the 16 and 32 compare. Cheers!
Alex (or anyone reading this with the knowledge), do you have any thoughts on 14” specs? I’m in the VERY early stages of learning development and am leaning toward buying the 14” and am quite confident that the base model will be overkill for anything I’ll be doing anytime soon. But, for the sake of future proofing a little I’m considering spec-ing it up a little. Would you think money is better spent going up to 32gb ram or the 10core CPU?
Is 16gb RAM and 512gb with 8 core CPU m1 pro enough for Visual Studio Xamarin Forms? I really need your help with this for me to decide. Thank you very much. On my 8gb RAM m1 mac mini I always experience crashing while programming on VS xamarin forms because of ram.
Great video! I am in between putting 200 more either in 1TB or the 16" model, this really helps. Do you think 16GB unified memory is enough for development, like in Unity, mobile and some data science in python? Considering that I'd probably have the laptop for 4/5 years give or take. Or should I try to upgrade to 32GB for 400 extra?
I would suggest upgrading to 32GB. I have 2019 Macbook pro i9 with 16GB. Having Chrome open and running build or just running the game in Unity almost maxes out my ram. Usually at around 13-14GB out of 16. Super easy to max out 16GB at least for me when I have more that 1 project running in Xcode or. Unity. and some other apps in the background. Waiting for my 16" m1 Max with 64GB ram right now!
@@Lola2012ful that's what I've been reading, I come from a Windows PC and wanted to upgrade, and if I were getting a windows it'd be a 32GB, but with the MBP is it worth 400 more?
I'd like to see how many python threads I can spawn on this machine when mine finally comes. Man that sounds really weird when I read it back to myself.
@@BrieoRobino My initial comment was meant to be a little humorous, but it does turn out I CAN spawn more threads and run faster scripts on the M1 than my previous windows machine, a Hades Canyon SOC. I'd hit diminishing returns on the intel chip and have to dial back the number of threads, but on the M1 I can add a few more and get some extra speed out of it. Anyhow, that's cool.
My 14 inch Max, even charged with my many years old Google Pixel 5 charger (which can provide maximum of 9V at 2A). Yes the charging was slow compared to the Apple brick, but it the job.

I do basic stuff and more into coding in r and business intelligence visualization development like power bi, tableau and lite video editing. Also, I have the habit of keeping for long until it dies. I am moving from i7 7th gen. What is your suggestion?
This is one of, if not the biggest reason I am considering the 16" even though 95% of it's life will be spent on a desk connected to an external monitor. I want my system to be silent as much of the time as possible.
I want to get one but I have the MacBook Pro 16 2019 i9 full upgraded so I'm a little hesitant on if it's worth it. This laptop doesn't struggle with anything it's just loud with the fans.
MPB 16 2019 is a beautiful machine. If you're ok with performance and battery life and fan noise doesn't bother you, I would stick with 2019 for a while to make it pay off and then upgrade to M2/M3 or whatever to get more noticeable difference in performance. Plus keep in mind that there is still unoptimised/not working soft on M1
My experience as a dev is that if you need to ask, you don't need to upgrade. Running into performance issues because of increased memory pressure is very noticable! You can also keep an eye on your Activity Monitor to get a feel for how much RAM you are actually using. Hope this helps!
What if we put so many thumbs up that Alex stops being a developer... It's a good video, but we need a developer who is blogging, not a blogger who is developing. P.S. nevertheless thumbs up
You're not going to be just coding for 21 hours. Might want to throw some compilation in there. Building in Xcode, Building with gradle/maven. these things eat battery life if you've ever worked on medium to large sized projects. With 16 inch you're realistically looking at 6-7 hours battery life when it's at 100% capacity brand new. When looking beyond 5+ years - because this computer is a long term investment - you'll be seeing around 4-5 hours coding time with it's battery.
@@AZisk thanks for your reply.. 👍 I am returning my 14 inch and getting 16” .. Your videos seriously helps make decision. Kudos and keep doing great work. :)

Ah, a man of culture
In the Apple Store with VSCode, I can tell you from actual hands-on experience that the 16" provides much better screen ergonomics than the 14". BTW, I was using 19pt font size on both the 14" and 16". Also, I closed the minimap and file navigator. In short, the 16" is perfect for vertical split-screen development but the 14" would require one to do a lot more horizontal scrolling. I have Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro and I plan to go with a 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM, 32 GPU, and 4 TB SSD.
Thanks again! I'm still good with my decision to order the 16" Max
may I ask what do you do so you need 16"?

I did the same. Reason for me is mostly frontend. It’s very convenient to have bigger areas to work with in responsive web.
Even when I do more backend stuff I tend to use lots of terminal windows, and it’s nice to be able to view many of them at the same time.
I have external monitors, but I really value the times when I don’t have access to them. Like in meetings or other stuff.
What would be nice - and I haven't found any clip anywhere.. is a good test and test of how these sizes affect when you work on places other than a desk. Couch, on the bed etc.. would nice to actúally see what it looks like.. how's the balance difference when the laptop is on your lap for example.. etc etc
If M1 Max does not need so much cooling as the previous i9, why did Apple make the laptop thicker, heavier and bulkier?
It absolutely doesn’t, no need to question it. I have 3 high refreshing rate high res monitors plugged in and the bottom doesn’t even get warm no matter what I do. My old 2019 gets toasty as soon as I plug in a 4K display and it gets really loud.
Also to answer you question, the new shape is more uniform where as the old one tapers off, they are about the same thickness. The air intake on the new ones are a lot larger. I think apple wants the laptop to run without audible fan noise 99% of the time
Because of more ports, especially HDMI and also because of liquid retina display. That's why it is thicker.
So what MacBook did he choose in the end?
I’m keeping the 16
@@AZisk max?
this is the vid i needed as a data scientist
Have you done any battery tests between the two machines? Really curious to know how much battery gets used doing things like compiling large projects, basic vs code usage, etc.
14 inch: your choice of Pro silicon [*not* Max (throttling, battery)] 32g or more memory if needed (VMs), 96w power…
27 inch monitors for office/home.
Do you ever feel the 14 inches of screen real estate is too short?
I guess Alexander has never experienced extended crunch times. :) Quite a few times I've done *really* long coding sessions, with my longest one being close to 32 hours. Of course, I was near power the entire time, so wouldn't need a 21 hour battery life, but still: obnoxiously long coding sessions do happen. :o
If you professionally code, you're doing at least 6 hours on a normal work day. 2 hours seems like nothing
And if you do crunch time, I’d have a word with who ever is managing you.
Also let's say if I wanted m1 Max 14", but that's custom config that takes time to get to my doorstep.
Performance is basically the same on the 14inch or 16inch. If you want the portability and have a nice monitor at home then I’d go with the 14inch. 🙂
You can use utilities like Bartender.
If you are using extended screens, the 14 inch is the best choice
yes but it does overheat because of the smaller fans
@@dinoscheidt despite? Maybe ‘other than’?

Can you compare M1 pro 16GB vs 32GB?
Cool review alex, been a fan for quite a while now and always love your "corny" jokes. xD
I'm also a "Fullstackoverflow" developer and a fan of M1 chips.
You're always been my go-to youtuber -- when in comes to laptops, since all of your reviews are related to programming. :D.
Keep it up man! Keep on making cool contents.

Nice comparison between the two.

Macbook Pro 14 (1.6kg), Macbook Pro 15 (1.84kg) and Macbook Pro 16 (2.2kg) … 16 inch is so heavy damn shall we change to 14 inch ?

i didnt get it too :O
I also pick my dev machine by the lines of code that it fits Kappa.
Great work Alex! The speakers are actually the same exact size though, the grill is for aesthethics
Thanks for the clarification, however, it sounds different to me with the 16 bass coming through better
Thanks for the info. Maybe 16" sounds better because of echo as the speaker is house inside a larger chassis?
I wouldrather just a smaller screen. If a need a bigger screen, I will get a large smart tv inmy living room
Would you recommend m1 macbooks for front end development?
I got the 16 inch because my local apple store only had the 10 core m1 pro in 16 inch and the 8 core m1 pro in 14 inch. I wanted to 10 core with a preference for the 14 inch. I went for the 16 for the 10 core. This thing feels like its full of concrete.
what is overflow development?
I thought you have been working on mobile app development.
Could you not put the taskbar on the top instead of the bottom? Then the notch is on the bar instead program
Thanks!
Friend, so what did you choose? I'm on the same path now and I can't choose. Thanks for the answer!

Thank you for sharing and all the time and creativity you put to make the videos. Is it a good practice to sometimes take the macbook from the power cord? I mean, I use mine always plugged so, I was wondering if this fine
Maybe thinking about keeping it for the long run, I would get 32GB. That could be a 16-inch M1 Pro base model with 32GB (right now at U$ 2,899.00). I don't think I would need a better GPU spec.
@@FelipeViaud that sounds like a great choice to me!

Should I buy M1 13inch MBP (16gb, 512gb) or the 14inch (base variant 16gb, 512gb)...

But here the 14inch is costing almost 1.5x the 13inch (seems a bit too much for me)
How much difference would it create on a day to day life? Is it worth it?
Looking for your suggestions. Thanks.
If you are going for an M1 base chip get the max book air - the MacBook Pro M1 is not worth the extra money. Then M1 MacBook Air is fantastic for android/Xcode development work for the price.
Get an m1 MacBook Air with 16gb. The 13" pro is not worth it, the air gives pretty much the same performance for cheaper.
Hey, also an Android Developer here. If you decide to buy an M1 mac, definitely buy 16gb ram. I recommend air over pro cuz there are almost no differences between them and air is cheaper.

You will need to run many vm soon. 32gb ram is better.

I would certainly not get less than 32…
16 RAM M1 is like 32 RAM Intel, just FYI
@@petereriksson6760 why? Any particular reason?
I would suggest upgrading to 32GB. I have 2019 Macbook pro i9 with 16GB. Having Chrome open and running build or just running the game in Unity almost maxes out my ram. Usually at around 13-14GB out of 16. Super easy to max out 16GB at least for me when I have more that 1 project running in Xcode or. Unity. and some other apps in the background.
Waiting for my 16" m1 Max with 64GB ram right now!

@@BrieoRobino I do. But that one process that handle's python's "virtual threads" can be faster or slower depending on the chip, no?
@@jmpersic probably.
@@BrieoRobino My initial comment was meant to be a little humorous, but it does turn out I CAN spawn more threads and run faster scripts on the M1 than my previous windows machine, a Hades Canyon SOC. м1 vs m1 pro in xcode please!
Cooling system in 16" is much better than in 14"
I have the 16 inch and have never heard the fans come on
This is one of, if not the biggest reason I am considering the 16" even though 95% of it's life will be spent on a desk connected to an external monitor.
What specs did you choose on the MacBooks for software dev?
As a Javascript/Flutter Dev, is 32 GB RAM upgrade worth it?
My experience as a dev is that if you need to ask, you don't need to upgrade. Running into performance issues because of increased memory pressure is very noticable! You can also keep an eye on your Activity Monitor to get a feel for how much RAM you are actually using. Hope this helps!

I guess if you have the money, why wouldn't you buy the expensive one?
What if we put so many thumbs up that Alex stops being a developer... It's a good video, but we need a developer who is blogging, not a blogger who is developing.
P.S. nevertheless thumbs up
и еще - у 16" нет быстрой зарядки через type-c, а у 14" есть, в дороге это важно, если потеряете зарядку, можно зарядиться хоть от првербанка)))
