  • Here's a recording I just received in a trade. It's a bass solo from a gig Jaco did at Seventh Avenue South on November the 22nd in 1985. Jaco covers a lot of musical ground in this solo, quoting "Portrait Of Tracy", "The High And the mighty", "Blackbird" and "Amerika" as well as throwing in some of his signature licks. All done with flawless execution.

Considering the date of this performance, Jaco sounds to be totally 'ON'....grateful for this 👍👍👍

I hear this and instantly recognize the brilliance, but I'm also reminded of an interview Zawinul did at some point where he talked how Jaco stopped innovating. He's mostly playing the same things in '85 that he was in '76.

Ironic because Zawinul himself should have stopped innovating in 1976

Incorrect. JZ kept on composing and innovating right up to his death. I have watched countless videos of his various bands after WR. Always breaking new ground with rhythm and melody. Witnessed this first hand at the Camden Jazz Cafe in 2007. For all JP's brilliance on the bass, JZ was the better composer. @@LageUA-cam

@DanielWesleyKCK Talking about this solo alone, Jaco hadn't yet come up with his arrangements of "Blackbird" and "Amerika" in 76'.. I have read the interview you're referring to, where Zawinul stated that Jaco was "relying on old tricks" and stuff he had
played before the last couple of years in WR. Having heard lots of WR bootlegs from that era I can see what he meant with regards to Jaco's contributions to the band those last couple of years. However it is simply not true that Jaco stopped innovating. I think Jaco felt increasingly trapped in this rock star role where he had to deliver to a screaming audience who largely came to see the crazy stage antics and showmanship side of his artistry rather than serious music making. Not exactly the ideal environment for creative expression. Then there was Zawinul's "technological overkill"( as Jaco called it) and growing need for control as well as tension between the two and perhaps some jealousy involved from Zawinul's side as Jaco was the main attraction of the band. The first thing Jaco did after leaving WR was starting and leading a big band, being the first bassist to do so. He also finished his highly innovative album "Word Of Mouth" and started working on "Holiday For Pans", perhaps his most ambitious project to date, one reason being that it featured Othello Molineaux on steel drums as the main soloist(!). And in contrast to the live solos he would do on tunes like "Sightseeing", "Port Of Entry" and "Fast City" with WR where he mostly used the same licks night after night Jaco's solos started sounding fresh again. Check out the 1982 WOM sextet gig from Toad's Place on my channel as a great example of this. To sum it up, being in Weather Report in the end became a creative straitjacket for Jaco.

@@garethmtbarnes Was Zawinul a better composer? That's debatable. Besides his brilliant solo albums, some of the greatest WR tunes were provided by Jaco and he had a big catalogue
of compositions that were never recorded properly and released. Besides, Zawinul lived to be over twice Jaco's age hence
having a much longer career in music. Neither did he have Jaco's issues with mental illness/substance abuse.

@@musicuniverse1986 And you could even argue that Joe kickstarted Jaco's addictions by peer pressuring him into drinking, pretty much sabotating his career (even if unintentional). Weather Report was a bad environment in general, since even the great Wayne Shorter (RIP) felt like he wasn't allowed to innovate and grow as an artist during his time in the band. What Joe did was diminish one of the greatest sax players into a session player with a couple of solos here and there
