I love how danny carey always looks like he just came over to watch the superbowl with you
😂
He looks like he just crawled out of a dumpster. Someone needs to dial 911 Rock-Star Fashion Police.
"911 Rock-Star Fashion Police, What is Your Emergency?"
"DANNY CAREY!!!! Send all units, NOW!!!!"
…after taking three bong rips.
🤣🤣🤣. Looks like he just came back from the skatepark with his kid. LOL
Yep, there’s no doubt which instrument he plays.
The best thing about a Beato interview is that he never goes for the salacious, or controversial. It's all about the music. You can see how relaxed the musicians are knowing they're not going to be cornered by some rumor or accusation. It's never click bate. We click because we're fans, and respect the format.
...and it's equally kuul that The Band didn't bring up the fact that Rick has quite vocally "sanctioned" Crimson in the past on his Channel. 🙂
He keeps it milquetoast, you’re right about that.
100%. He's a great interviewer who clearly loves his sublect matter.
@@howardthrust explain!
@pricedownproductions9851 - It's time for "due diligence" on your part. Those who have "liked" my comment have already done theirs... 🙂
Belew deserves so much more honor and credit for his contribution to music.
Beat is my favorite KC album.
100%
I was excited to see this, but close to $500 for my wife and I in the cheap seats? No fucking way. I saw KC coming out of the pandemic for $20/ticket. Great show.
His dissonant guitar solo on the live performance of Level Five is my favorite guitar solo of all time, coming ahead of even Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix, which is my close second
Belew is an amazing artist
2 Zappa vets, 2 Crimson vets, and Tool.
The potential is unimaginable.
I have not been to a live show in over a decade…but I hock something for a ticket to this.
4 of the most inveterate and dedicated musicians alive.
Inveterate AND unregenerate.

I feel very fortunate to be able to go to this show and meet the band - so looking forward to it!
@@EricJSchultz5280 I really wrangled with myself about seeing it. I'm actually not that chuffed (I've seen King Crimson before). It's a chance to see Steve Vai live that makes me want to go. He's an amazing personality live.
What a line up, holy hell.

Amazing
Splendid combination yes!
Levin and Carey as your rhythm section. Jesus.
This is a dream for me. I'm 33 now and discovering beat, three of a perfect pair and is it Thrack (vroom, walking on air, dinosaur) any way at 17 year old finding this music changed my life ❤.
"We had a producer ... his name is Scrote." Best first line of an interview.

Belew, Vai, Levin, Carey and Scrote.
I guffawed and scared the SH*T out of my wife when I watched this
Scrotum? 🤔😏
He doesn’t travel well. Customs, passports, the unbelief…
I've always thought that Adrian is a highly underrated singer. Everyone knows he's a monster on the guitar, but I've admired his voice for 40 years!
Absolutely. If he was just a singer, and wasn't famous for playing in a band of revered instrumentalists, he would get a lot more plaudits for his vocals.
I wished Rick had asked more about that, in fact... I don't think Adrian was doing a lot of singing in that Takling Heads tour where Fripp and Bruford saw him, so I wonder when and how to was decided that he would be the lead singer of 'Discipline'.
He gave us Discipline. Great writer, singer and guitarist.
A throwback to the Roy Orbison school of crooning.
As to Adrian voice, I went to high school with him, he’s always had a great voice, anything he hears he can sing or play, always could.
@@Electricshrock With T-Heads, Adrian did some back-up harmonies. With Frank Zappa, Adrian famously did "City of Tiny Lights", so it was apparent he could sing.
Striking how polite and humble all of these musical giants are. No one speaks over anyone else.
They sound like college professors, not the 1% of 1% of the greatest musicians ever!
Its a lesson to up and coming musicians. People think attitude gets you places... Yeah it will... in the short term... but being humble. respectful and honest is going to put you into a LONG career.
@@1xayekim Very well said !!!

Adrian is a very down to earth guy
I'm amazed at how Tony Levin doesn't age... The guy looks sixty since the early '80s!
Yeah, but the Chapman Stick in his attic has become a fossil 😂
@@musicdirector8046 Seems all of the younger touch guitar players are using newer brands or designing their own instruments.
Well.... in the early 80s he was in his early 30s... so there's that 😂
Or he rather looks twenty until 2020s lol
there's gossip that Levin is actually 325 years young
We are honored to hear Steve talk about our "songbook" In this interview and that both Steve and Danny are using our scorebooks to rehearse for the upcoming BEAT tour. We were also happy to give Rick a copy before this interview. Both King Crimson scorebooks are available exclusively through 7d Media.
We can look forward to the "what makes king crimson great" video where Rick pretends he's working it out by ear live...
@@michael1 he doesn't pretend anything. Any adult under 90 (except The Big Guy) knows most of UA-cam is worked on and scripted before the video is recorded & edited.
I got the score books as a christmas present from my wife❤. There’s enough interesting guitar lines for me to learn for the rest of my life. 😅
@@giork2828 Most of UA-cam is recorded before it's uploaded. Except for the live stuff.
I purchased the first press as soon as it was announced. My favorite songbook ever and still getting my brain around some of the genius of this music on paper
Did anyone take note of what Steve Vai said at 59:13? "You choose how you want to feel and then you decide the story attached to it". This guy is more than a guitarist/artist/performer. He's like a spiritual master. No joke. He always has these interesting philosophies he shares in his interviews. The guy has some depth. And on a more pertinent level, cool that Adrian put this together. I hope they come to my town.
Well said
Yep, I noticed that, too, and also thought it was pretty profound.
I did notice that! Thought to myself: Right out of a mindfulness mediation seminar!
He's a funny guy on top of it all. His story of how he joined Zappa is hilarious.

Danny is so quiet, respectful and appears to be in total awe.
That's the magic of a Master of their craft!

AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ADRIAN SING FRAME BY FRAME AND MATTAE KUDASAI??
His voice is sublime!
Frame by Frame transports me to another world…I look forward to hearing him sing it live again!
A rare, freakish talent- his voice is as incredible as his playing.
He’s done Frame and E with the Dutch National Philharmonic and they’re both on yt. Totally worth a listen
To be fair he's been singing Frame By Frame on almost every solo show in the last fifteen years and MK would also ocassionally make appearences. But yeah, exquisite singer.
No you're not, and I have no clue what all has to be wrong with your head to think it's even possible for you to be the only one! BTW, his voice and having written the stuff to it is what made Frame by Frame, and a whole lot of other songs so freaking good.
Dude… you are crushing it with these interviews.
❤ at about 7:50 or so
They're not interviews, they're conversations
"You choose how you want to feel and then you decide the story attached to it." -Deep words by Vai.
He's very articulate and insightful!
Truth!
Adrian’s explanation of how the poly meters of the guitar parts in Frame By Frame loop is brilliant.
I was playing bass in this new band & this night we were in London staying at this producer's mews house & the tv was on. King Crimson playing Frame by Frame, it had only just come out. I've never felt so inadequate as a musician. They were just on another level & Bellew singing while playing those time signatures, just wow.
Man, can't wrap my head that Tony is 77 and is still rockin. Amazing
And why not?
I did an album with Steve Hackett band singer Nad Sylvan a few years ago and Tony played on several songs. A legend.
Wasn't that him on quads skating in that commercial that kept bumping into the interview? LOL! 😄
😮
Tony is an amazing musician and such a nice guy! I got to meet him last month when he played in Chattanooga with Stick Men! Genuinely one of my favorite players!
Steve Via asking Danny Carey "say that again' about playing with Jeff Buckley is pure class and respect.
Buckley via Carey.
I don´t find it in the interview, maybe I´ve skipped it and can´t find it. Can you please point the minute?

From 1988 to 1989, Jeff Buckley played in a band called The Wild Blue Yonder that included future Tool drummer Danny Carey and bassist John Humphrey.
Rick Beato is 61, and he's the baby of this group. Rick, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey are of similar ages, but the other two are each more than 10 years older. Adrian Belew is 74, and Tony Levin is 77.
I would never guess that Danny is 62, but then again, I would never guess that I'm 60.
Yeah, that's unreal.
@@fchrisgrimm I looked him up because I figured he was at least ten years younger than he is!
Those three 80's King Crimson albums are pure magic. I will never forget the first time that I heard Elephant Talk as a kid back in the 80's.
The world would love to hear an album of original music from this line up!
Now that would be something to look forward to. Not that the 80's King Crimson wasn't already mind bending, but man that kind of music may still have new and great places to go!
Hell yes!
Agreed.
Honestly, that excites me more than the KC stuff, and that's very exciting itself.
I do wish they'd play a couple of Thrak tunes too; my favorite KC album
I agree. However, I'd prefer to see Belew in Fripp's role as the creative leader - doing things HIS way, in other words. Belew has such a great balance of accessibility and weirdness.
To me King Crimson is a British band but this is an all American line up????
OMG. What a lineup to play ANYTHING.
They could play scrabble and I'd still watch them do it
I hope they capture the spirit of the originals but don't limit themselves to reproduction and let their creativity come out. But given who it is I doubt that's a big worry.
ANYTHING? I wouldn't let them play ACDC or The Ramones. But to be fair, i don't know anyone who can cover those two, interestingly enough everyone fails at that.
Honestly I kinda wish they'd try making something original instead of wheeling out the oldies, a mix of the oldies and some new improvisational stuff would perfect in fact
@@pfzt I like Scratch 21's cover of Big Balls. It's more winky in its humor, but the spirit is there.
Danny's digging the interview even more than Rick. He must be having such a blast preparing for the tour. What an honor!
Beato is becoming the gravitational singularity for the greatest music and musicians
Rick is changing what music content is. Look at this 1hr conversation.... nobody can touch this content and orchestrate this conversation on this level. Rick, you're the Beatles of content creation for music, thank you.
And about this lineup, no words... living legends that are so humble and nice. You can't find 4 guys who love music like these.
Rick knows and loves music and he stays out of the way, letting the musicians go deep
The result is more of a dialog than just an interview.
@charlesboucher9533 agree partially, he made sure every member present got involved directing them the right question at the right time. Then they spoke their mind, the interview feels perfect, zero awkwardness. This takes a lot of intelligence and personal touch. But I agree he knows music and knows how to let them speak instead of interrupting them, and he knows music on such a high level that whatever technicality they go on about he can comment and ask further questions to keep each subject going.
I agree. Rick shows the difference a specialist can make when conducting an interview. He is a great musician and producer in his own right and knows just what to ask to make musician feel comfortable.
Danny's choice to wear the 'Beat' shirt in his 1 on 1 interview makes so much sense now 😆
Same place, his Studio, wonder if Danny Carey interview was before or after , this REVEAL interview?
Noticed that!
Oh God
Right? I thought that was a great shout-out to his prog roots at the time.
And in this video he chooses to wear an NBA tshirt 😂
For Adrian Belew to say that he couldn't imagine playing with any other drummer than Danny is the ultimate complement.
An all-star lineup being emulated by another all-star lineup. Getting Danny Carey to play Bruford’s parts was sheer genius. This is going to be a fun show to watch.
There's probably 200 years of combined studio, touring and musicianship in that group. Crazy.
And if they stand on each other's shoulders they're at least 25 feet tall.
Reminds me of the " Travelling Wilbury's." Bring together amazing musicians who all respect each other, and let the magic happen.
You are the go-to interview host of this decade, Rick. Your musical knowledge, real-world experience, and curiosity have now set the standard by which all others are measured. Your guests appreciate you as a fellow musician and fans recognize the fellow fan in you. We appreciate you asking all the questions we would like to know and even the ones we would not have thought of. Rick Beato interviews are where all the music geeks unite!

How can one NOT get psyched about this tour?
Almost too good to be true.
When you listen to Discipline, you get a sense of how influential it was on Tool’s sound. Amazing album and way ahead of its time.
Glad that Fripp has given his blessing. This era of Crimson is my favourite.
Nice for the fans, but honestly, who cares what he thinks about this group. He did Ade dirty moving him out for a cover band player.
@@colinburroughs9871Fripp is a strong personality to put it diplomatically, I don’t like how he treats his former bandmates sometimes, but Crimson is Fripp and Fripp is Crimson.
@@colinburroughs9871Don't think it's fair to write Jakko out as just a 'cover band player". Sure, he played in a Krim "cover band", but it was one that included original members of the group. Not to mention that Jakko is a well established artist already, and he had even done a project with Fripp and Mel Collins before joining the reformed Crimson.
@@Miguel-un1vh I understand that to a point, but I also think that if that was as true as Fripp kind of claims, this band wouldn't be happening. The 80's band kept the brand alive for Fripp, but Adrian is clearly the reason those records happened. Kind of dichotomous, but within that I feel Adrians thumbprint on Crimson from 1981 on was important enough that it motivates my take on this point.
@@MarceloKatayama Schizoid band was good and all, but Jakko's standing in all of this isn't that of someone who wrote a note of the relevant material, vs Adrian who's the primary song writer of 6 studio records. It's hard to separate him from that. Crimson always had been about doing the next thing until it was time to do 1972 again (which was fine, but at the expense of Adrian didn't work for me- not that anyone cares what I think about this in any real sense.. hah).
Man, the older Steve's body gets the younger his soul becomes, I swear. He's just as excited as the rest of us, as are Adrian, Danny, and Tony. What a lineup, what incredible music, can't wait for this!
Steve and his wife sat behind me and my mom at a Todd Rundgren show at the Wiltern in Los Angeles about a year and a half ago. He was just as stocked as anyone else in the room. Could tell he was having a great time.
I've not really known a lot about Steve Vai other than his guitar-god status (I'm not a guitarist). But I agree that he seems like a really cool, genuine person. I loved his take on the new social media landscape -- "I think it's important that you choose how to take it." That flexibility and the conscious choice to move forward and continue to learn really impressed me. @@gerimayawhyte154

The sheer amount of monumental talent and historical significance in this room is mind boggling. I would in no way shape or form be able to conduct this interview, I think I would spontaneously combust. THANK YOU RICK!!

With all of these interviews Rick keeps being able to get, I'm convinced that he's the man to interview the reformed Spinal Tap

"oh I played in a country band with Jeff"..... what a thing to just throw out there. amazing.
Right? Two musicians I would never imagine playing together, let alone in a country band lol. If you haven’t already, you should listen to Danny‘s interview with Rick. He goes into more detail on that
Check out Rick's one-on-one interview with Danny. He explains how he had a studio before Tool began, and he played with Jeff, as well as Carole King and others. I highly recommend the Danny interview.
I also loved Steve Via's reaction to it. Amazing Interview.
The humility on all of these virtuoso musicians is amazing. I can really tell Steve is enthusiastic about this and views it as a challenge.
Danny Carey is just so happy to be there listening to the stories behind the music he always loved
What a line-up !!!!!!!
Vai casually saying "and I worked with Frank". You know what that means.
Boot camp
Zappa also gave Adrian Belew his first big break.
If you didn't work, then there was no room for you in any of Zappa's bands! So anyone who ended up on stage with him can probably say they had to work hard for it.
Frank made Vai's career possible -- but David Lee Roth put Vai on the map
First name basis, baby.
Can we all just take a moment to congratulate Rick on the coup of an interview, posting this just before tickets dropped and interviewing them before anyone else? This is what makes Rick great. ;)
Band interviews have certainly gotten better since the early days. Thank you Rick.
I admire Vai's sense of humility ... not that he doesn't have confidence but that he understands and appreciates music at that level of mastery is deeply personal and inimitable and not a competition of who "better".
They're not easy parts. He'd have been happier if Fripp had phoned him and asked him to be the replacement for Belew in a band because then he'd only have to make a few elephant noises and sing - although the singing is sublime.
I think that sense of humility comes from his formative experiences playing with Frank who never let anyone in his band get a big head.
that came from his time with zappa
How do you replace Gregg Lake or John Wetton? or Bill Bruford
Steve's humility?? Hard to pickup his humility when he's speaking 95% of the time. 🤨🙄

@@MoviesNStuff Oh come on. The "free jazz" noodling in Moonchild is awful. Islands is not worthy of King Crimson. No, I happen like ThrakAttaKc. Cadence and Cascade, while contrasting, is dull; so is the analogous song on the next (or previous) album. Book of Saturday is pretty marginal. Earthbound is again unworthy. The last album had some snoozers. Talking Drum and Sheltering Sky are merely okay.
You might notice a pattern. I don't like when KC attempt schmaltz. There are plenty of other bands for that, and ones who do it much better.
That said, the 40th Anniversary USA (with Starless and Fracture) is peak music to my ears. The ProjeKcts are super-cool (not as much 2, why put Adrian on drums), Level 5 is supririsngly good. As I've already noted, I really dig ProjeKct X. One must listen to Fripp's Exposure also.

To introduce yourself to the original Crimson (people will says Larks, Starless, Red), just listen to a 40th or 30th Anniversary version of the live album USA (one with Starless and Fracture on it). A live album as great as Van der Graaf Generator's Vital, and Kansas' Two for the Show; if I had to have only one KC, it would be this (or ProjeKct X, which is probably a strange choice for fans). For some other songs, find the live version of Level 5 online, Happy With What you Have to be Happy With, Dinosaur, the albums ProjeKcts 1, 3, and 4 (especially 3 and 4), and ProjeKct X (the whole thing, not just the song "Heaven and Hell"), Robert Fripp's solo album Exposure, the song "Carrying No Cross" by UK (with KC alum), the album The Repercussions of Angelic Behavior (Fripp and Bill Rieflin), there's stuff that Bruford & Levin did called "BLUE" (with Mark Isham, cornet player, I think, and David Torn?!?), Fripp also solos on some early Van der Graaf Generator, and one should always listen to VDGG (though I'm biased).

What a pleasure to listen to these people. There's a certain Richard Feynman interviews vibe here. Rick, thank you so much for your effort. It wouldn't work without your expertise, curiosity and humility.
looks like we're coming back to the era of truly talented musicians having a face made for radio. about damn time.
I love how Vai understand new generations, with tiktok and people recording. He just doesnt put barriers and just assimilate the times.
Rick knows the importance of leaving space in making music and he also knows it as an interviewer. Home run again Mr. Beato.
Adrian Belew comes across as such a nice guy whenever you hear him speak.
Bet that's so nice for Danny, all his biggest dreams come true!
He kinda just seems to be sitting there amazed that he's a part of this group. I mean, he's certainly got the ability, but two of the originals of that era plus Vai... he must feel like the luckiest drummer in the world this year.
I love Danny's drumming in Tool, but I wonder what this would sound like with Bill Buford.
Jesus Christ Rick... You sir are on a roll.
I saw Adrian Belew touring in the 80s in Victoria BC. He had many pedals, multiple guitars with different tuning and it was incredible watching him play. I got to hang out with him a bit after the gig and he's such a great down to earth guy.
Was never a big Crimson fan but with this lineup I will have to check it out.
how can you not love Adrian Belew, and this line up is insane!
As much as I love Danny, I wonder how wonderful this would be with Bill Buford.
@@struedel25 I believe Bruford officially (and to me sadly) stopped playing the drums many years ago, and I welcome anyone else reading this to confirm or correct me.
@@mettamoose5074Yes he retired years back from playing
I would love to have Phil Ehart playing drums.
Actually, Adrian's memory about the very first tour (after 44 minutes into the video) is kind of fuzzy. They played Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part Two and Red from the very first show (Bath, April 30th, 1981) onward. Plus the seven tunes that would end up on the album Discipline. And as an encore, they played one piece a second time. In Manchester (May 7th) and Liverpool (May 8th), it was Elephant Talk; In London (May 10th) and Paris (May 13th), it was Discipline, and in Amsterdam, the show I was fortunate enough to attend (May 15th), it was Red. The entrance fee was 12 guilders and 50 cents (perhaps $6.- 1981 US$). The show lasted about 65 minutes, but it changed lives. I know I can't speak for anybody else, but it definitely changed mine! Anyway, they went into the studio to record the album three days later, May 18th. And the wait for its release, September 22nd 1981, made it one of the longest summers I can remember.
We've found Robert's alternate UA-cam account.
For those who don’t know KC or are too young to have ever seen them, do t miss this band live.
It will be legendary!
Here we go again! Rick Beato reaching for the stars! Man!! Give me a break! Tony Levin, Danny Carey, Adrian Belew and Steve Vai in one room? Boiler Room!
Holy crap. This is the concert event of the year and you have the first interview! Proof that quality wins out!
DUDE, I CANNOT WAIT to see Vai play King Crimson! This is going to be amazing!
I don’t think I’ve been happier to see a lineup of all star musicians. I CANNOT WAIT to see what their chemistry is like on stage!
God please come to Colorado when touring,, whata killer line up,, hope to see the best show ever...
one striking thing becomes clearer with every interview. those guys know him, they watch his stuff, and the are appreciative about the stuff and the person.
