    Best simple explanation on how to fix a leaking toilet cistern . I'm now going to fix mine. If I don't I'm going to have a very annoyed light sleeping wife that will hear the water pump activate on our rural property and get me up in the middle of the night to fix the problem .
    I'm one step ahead of her.

    Thank you so much for this explanation. Wasn't sure if we were going to need to replace the whole cistern as we couldn't figure out how to undo the bottom bit to get the washer off without breaking it. Details where crystal clear a $3 washer and no more leaks. You are the best.

    Excellent video; clear and informative with the two crucial tips about seating the washer and cleaning finally solving the issues I had been having! I will note that for the Caroma Hi-flow style mechanisms, I only had success when allowing the (official spare clear /thin) washer to flare up off the plastic base. Given it's meant to seal with the outlet and not the plastic part, this makes sense.

    Thank you Matt. A very helpful and clearly explained video. My Caroma cistern was a slightly different model, but the tips were still applicable. When I put the new washer on, I had to stretch it so hard that the first part slid in too far, and that part of the washer was not far enough out to seal. I had to pull this part out with needlenose pliers, and work at the washer with a butterknife until I could get it even enough.

    Thanks for the video mate! I'm in Kentucky, USA and no one around here has any experience with Caroma cisterns. I bought this years ago when dual flush was new here in the States and Caroma was the best at it. But I've had a time getting my new washer to seat properly. I'll try your advice and see how it goes. g'day!

    • @dougwachs
      @dougwachs Місяць тому +1

      well, looks like the soap and knife trick made it work. I also had not been really careful to keep the washer placed uniformly around the seat - it was mishapen a bit - I sorted that all out and it seems to be working. Thanks again - it was a real help - I love my 20+ year old Caroma and didn't want to replace it!

    Thank you very much, I replaced the outlet washer, but it was still leaking. I then found your video, and based on your great explanation, I could see that washer was not sitting in a small ridge, some of it was sitting above it , amazing the amount of leakage this causes. I used a very small screwdriver, 2mm, to carefully tuck it down into the groove without damaging it, and problem solved. Thanks again for taking the time to post your incredibly helpful video.

    Cheers and thanks you to both. Job done 'simple as pie' thanks to your explanations. Some extra tips that I found while doing this. 1) make sure you have a waste bucket handy as the perished washer (mine is black) is like ink and can make a real mess during the extraction process. Old towel/rags too for 'black' drips and water. 2) bucket or old container for flushing the muck out after you have removed the flush mechanism. 3) And lastly, while the cistern is filling up the first time pour some water over the 'weight' part (near the flapper wrapped around the stem that holds a little water) to fill it up. This weighted water helps to hold the stem in place during the refill. Thanks once again.

    This worked but I had to try several times, and I ended up trying the "spare" brown one in the kinetic dual pack from Bunnings but in the end the trick seemed to be to wriggle the pipe at the bottom so it fits snuggley into that ridge. That stopped the leaking water. Touch wood.

    It look like you have the proper replacement seal washer as some people buy a similar looking black seal for a different Caroma bodel which is too tight.

    Hi Matt & Ann
    Thank you so much for this helpful video.
    Any tips on getting the flusher buttons of this particular Caroma model to sit right?
    Sometimes the buttons feel tight - with no give at all when you tap them gently. In this case when you push down to flush, the button does not stay down to drain the cistern, but simply pops back up and flushing stops. For a proper flush, you have to hold the button down.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi. Great video. It gives me confidence to DIY instead of getting plumber in. Only one problem. I'm not sure which seating washer to buy from bunnings. My Coroma is "Slimline" but has the same 2 buttons like yours, and the float thing on mine is on left side instead of right. Because of lockdowns I can't go into Bunnings to compare my old one. The 2 brands; Fix-A-Loo and Kinetic both have Coroma compatible washers. How do I find out which is correct? I'd be guessing but toilet is 15-20 years old.

    • @AnnErasmus
      @AnnErasmus  2 роки тому

      I think mine was kinetic. All I can suggest is to take measurements of the washer in place (without taking it off) then look online (ebay's quite good) for the replacement. Hope this helps, good luck

    Hi your video helped fixed our problem. We did both replace the inlet valve and new cistern seal.
    However both flush buttons seem a little sticky and finicky when used. Is there a way to free them up a little?
    We have a very similar model toilet from same era.

      Yes, I have experienced a similar situation in the past, not sure what causes it. Mine çame right on its own after a few days. Might be worth while trying a little silicon spray on the mechanism? Thanks for the comment 👍😊

      Thanks for your comment. I would suggest you try eBay or amazon. As for size they seem to be pretty standard. But if you measure your outside and inside diameters and check them against the specifications of the new washer you should be OK

    Back again, The knife blade helped a lot however it had a mind if its own so now i have put silicone on top of the washer to ensure that no water can sneak in.

    Hi there.
    I have a similar cistern and I am having problems with it. What does it mean when you have to hold the flush button down for a complete OR half flush. It stops flushing when I release the buttons. Thanks

    • @AnnErasmus
      @AnnErasmus  3 місяці тому

      I am not sure. You could try flushing with the lid off, if that works normally then it may need the rod of the flush button to be adjusted longer. Good luck, thanks for your comment 👍😊
