  • In this video I show you how to fix a toilet that leaks water into the toilet bowl from the cistern which causes unnecessary water usage. The toilet system I have is a Coroma 230 Series but the method would be applicable to a lot of other systems that use a seating washer.

Good to see a video where you're allowed to make mistakes. Talking through to a solution extremely helpful. Thanks for taking time and effort to video and post!

Thanks. Mistakes are a great learning experience and if I can help others avoid the same mistake I made and found a solution for then I am satisfied. I tend to do reviews of products I have bought and point out the faults I have found and then the buyer can decide if the product fault is worthy of avoiding the product or if it is not a deal breaker.

Just replaced my washer & it now works like a treat. No more leaks, so much appreciated.

I replaced my washer with the very same one you used in this video a week ago. I did it again today with the correct washer after it continued leaking. The black washer is not the correct one for this Thunderflush type Caroma outlet valve. You might get lucky for a while, but you'll be back doing it again pretty soon when it starts leaking again. The correct washer is red/pink in colour, slightly larger in diameter, slightly thicker and has Fix-A-Loo part number 226129. You can also tell immediately when you've seated it properly because it is supposed to curl up into a shallow bowl shape, like a belleville washer or disc spring when stressed around the central tube. The belleville washer shape helps it to seal and creates a suction against the seat when pushing the flush button for a little bit of resistance to touch which feels proper. If your washer is sitting perfectly flat after installation as shown in the video, you've got the wrong washer. It must be perfectly central located and do not use metal implements to massage it into this position unless you want to replace it again the very next day. There are about 8 slightly different washers all supposedly for different generation Caroma cisterns stocked at Bunnings. The black one is for very old model Caromas I believe. The red/pink one is for later model and specifically the dual flush ones everyone has these days. Most of the old single flush ceramic Caroma cisterns these days have finally cracked and been replaced with these plastic dual flush models instead for water conservation reasons. These use the red/pink washer.

I researched it all and that was the correct washer for my model. hasn’t leaked since

I’m so glad you mentioned the washer needs to curl up, none of the instructions say that. I pulled mine apart five times because it continued to leak. Once I had the washer curling to form the cup the leak stopped. Thanks to you and the original poster for your help.

There are few other videos on UA-cam which try to address this problem. Those videos have different colour washers. I used them, didn't help me.. I saw this video, and that's when I got the correct washer. The trick not only lies in inserting the washer correctly, but also in purchasing the correct washer as per the cisterns model. $250 for the plumber, few DIY washer tries and then following this video, my problem was solved. Thanks heaps! 😊

Use a little dish soap on the new seal and rotate the white part under the seal and it will go in smooth every time.

Thankyou so much for that tip about rotating the white bit under the new washer. It got the seal fully inserted to where it should be (after one failed attempt where we hadn't done that), and now it's no longer leaking into the toilet bowl! Brilliant!

So really, the problem is an important part to show...the new washer didn't seat properly. I get what you must have done; you did point out what should be done...but the problem's solution was omitted visually. Another minute where you made the seating washer seat properly would have made the video feel complete. Thanks for the video in any case.

whoa! This is my toilet!!!!! Though it was so old a new cistern would be needed. Had no idea how to replace the washer and as I rent I didn't want to bother my landlord for something that might be easy once you know how. Off to Bunnings soon to get the washer [and thank you for showing the one you used] Thank you again you've saved me so much time and stress. 🥰

Thanks for the detailed vid. I too made the same mistake. Just a quick question, when I was testing the unit, I pressed down on the same thing you pressed when flushing the water out and it worked fine, but after putting the lid on, the buttons pop straight back up when flushing instead of staying down for a few seconds. Is there a trick to placing the lid down with the pushing prongs so the half and full flush stay down correct time? Cheers

I am not a plumber. I have a similar cistern if not the same It does have an overflow. If I am not mistaken, It s the square plastic tubing in the centre (look at the four minute mark). If water overflows, it goes down this tube and into the bowl. Proof is, just poor some water from a cup down this tube and you will see it run straight into the bowl. Correct me if I am wrong.

Great video, I have that exact toilet. It never stops running after flushing it and it leaks, it is noisy. The plastic adjustment screw broke off as I was wanting to see how it works, but I put a metal screw in. It leaks from tap and on the left side underneath, it needs new seals. I turn it off the water at night.

PRobably the bottom seal leaking causing the water level and float to drop, hence the constant filling..... I also had this cistern and changed the entire off coloured cistern with an $80 dollar one from bunnings...

You need to carefully clean where the seat washer goes of all the crud that will be there before you put the new seat washer on.

Actually not sure what it is. Looks like I threw it out as I just checked and it is gone. Might be there to colour the water or to fill in some space to save water.. Or maybe the previous owners stored drugs there haha

It's a toilet cleaner called Toilet Blue. It was popular in the early 90s. Made your water blue and smell better. You can still buy them in some supermarkets in Australia.

Hope you don't mind me saying mate, but you got the wrong one (I know because the same thing happened to me last weekend). You should have taken the orange colored "dual flush" one that was next to it.

Hmm, hasn't leaked since the replacement so seems to work fine. Do you have the part number of the one you believe is a better one? They are all dirt cheap so no harm having an alternative part that works as well or better.

    • @rufftommy1
      @rufftommy1 11 місяців тому

yes I agree. I just replaced mine with the larger red/orange one that outside diameter is same as the old one but the inner diameter is still the same as the smaller black one that Walrus bought. Seems like the black one worked for him anyway. Thank you anyway, your video was helpful in getting me to the fix the problem 🙂
