Great amount of information, thanks. I have black bear and puma on my property. I have never had trouble with the beautiful cats but have had a few false charges by a large male black bear. I never cut my grass or ride my road bicycle without bear spray and a 7.5 inch blade fighting knife on my belt. Thanks for the video.

A Tree may not be handy. The most important thing to know is Bear Behavior. The majority of black bears are not interested in humans. Most of them run away if you stand up to them. A sow with cubs is NOT the only bear to be careful around. A Young 2 year old male that follows and stalks you silently is a DANGEROUS bear.
That is predator behavior. That bear will come closer and look for an opening to attack you. Don't be fooled. The only thing you can do is SHOOT the Bear. Keep shooting until it goes down and stops moving. NEVER go into the woods unarmed with no ability to fight back. Avoid solo hiking, camping, or backpacking.
It is best to report a bear encounter to the state game commission, whether a bear attacks you or not. A Bear that follows people silently is up to no good. if you get out of the woods before the bear attacks you, the next person may not be as fortunate. Call the game commission and give them the location of the bear.

Me and my friend just encountered what we think was a 400+lb male black bear while fishing today. We were really close to the water so the bear didnt notice use and neither did we. My friend happened to look up and it was 20 feet in front of us. We both just backed up slowly and were very lucky that it also did because all we had were flashlights and pocket knives. We got really lucky today but for now on I’m not going into the woods without bear spray. We live in new jersey.

I was in ketchican Alaska during the summer and we were fly fishing salmon out of a creek. I had let my guard down because the fishing was phenomenal! I happened to look up and saw a sow and two Cubs headed for us and two bores behind them. I didn't have any bear spray but the guide did and he didn't seem concerned at all that there were 5 bears headed right for us as we were fishing in their feeding hole. It was pretty scary but our guide said that in 20 plus years he had only had to use it once. We backed out of there and I was relieved when we reached the car. 5 bears at once was to much for me. I now carry bear spray with me when I'm fly fishing in my home state. Thank you for posting that informative video! I think if I encountered a bear I would have drained the whole can. It's good to now know about the 2 second burst!

Personally if ever I would consider myself exposed I would carry the bear spray but would also add a whistle as well as one of those cans that blast a super loud noise like at ball games. I was told by a fellow that had encounter several bears in his time that he always carries fire crackers and two lighters. He said he's had to light a couple more than once but the bears always turn and run. I don't know that I'd want to take that much time. I have two of the "Worlds Loudest Whistles" that are way louder than most. The airhorn is super loud too. I feel this would keep the bears from reaching a point that I'd have to resort to the spray. I WOULD NOT HESITATE to use the bear spray on cougars or bob cats as well. Here's why. The cougar or bob cat or whatever creature does not know they are not a bear! :-)

I was spring turkey hunting in PA a few years ago when a mom and three cubs came up from behind me. It was a wet morning so I did not hear them until they were about 15 yards away and they were walking directly towards me. I stood up and with that the mom made a huff or grunt type of noise and all three cubs scurried up the closest tree to them. The mom kind of reared back as if she was about to charge. I yelled at her and slowly walked backwards, 12 gauge shot gun in a ready position. I certainly did not want to shoot the bear. (A 12 gauge would have probably only made her more angry). As I walked backwards the mom held her position until she thought I was no longer a threat. She made another grunt and the cubs came down the trees and all four bears scurried away. Although I would have liked to have seen them from a further distance, it was still a great morning in the PA woods.

Next time, you take that gun and you open fire on any bear 🐻 that comes anywhere near you. If you don't want to do it for yourself then do it for all the other hikers that come across that area every year.
      Think, dumbass!

@@davidlamotta1994 Wow, you obviously have never had a bear experience and probably do not hunt or spend time in the real wilderness. If that bear doesn't attack you, then why the hell would you shoot it? It was a sow and cubs. She will only attack you if she feels a threat to her cubs or if she is hunting. Neither of those instances were present in his case. And, if I have a 12 gauge shotgun, loaded with ANY type of shot or slug, then I would feel very safe. I can cut a tree down with a couple of shots from a 12 gauge. If any bear came at me when I was packing a 12 gauge, a shot to the face would totally blind and probably kill even a grizzly. So to kill the sow, especially when she has cubs, is just plain stupid and shows no respect for wildlife. And by the way, he was not "hiking", he was turkey hunting. Very doubtful that you will have any hikers in that area. And if someone is going to go hiking, they need to carry bear spray or be packing. I am 67 and spent most of my life hunting and fishing in Canada. I've had many bear encounters. Just imagine if I had killed each and every bear that I came across. That is just plain stupid and shows NO respect for other living creatures. I am totally disgusted with your comment.

Good Day Excellent information. I did a lot of hunting in my younger years and in the late 70s my dad and I had a 3 foot distance encounter with a black bear cub on an old hunting road dating back to the early 1900s Our family hunting dog made a dash for a large low bush and we thought he had cornered a rabbit or other small animal. I walked over to pull the dog back and get a look at the animal. To my surprise out comes a small front leg. It was a cub. I immediately told my dad to take the dog as I had no idea where the mother was. All we had was our shotguns and mine was a 12 gauge. I switched over to slugs and my dad said lets get out of here. We backed off and the cub ran out and climbed a tree. Luck was on our side that day as we quickly left the area without further incident. My poor dad had to carry our spaniel about half a mile before he lost interest. The next day I went back to the same road to hunt again. I spotted the mother with her cub on the far side of a field in the same general area. I was thankful the cub wasn't an orphan. Scary encounter at the time but that wasn't our day to die.

Thanks for video because I realized I made some rookie mistakes in a bear encounter while hiking. I was hiking at Cougar Mountain here in Issaquah in Washington State when I encountered Black Bear on a section of trail called the Klondike Swamp Trail. The trail signs even had had wooden bear signs. I was hiking the trail when I came across a very fresh big pile of poop. At first I thought it was a inconsiderate dog owner at first, but suspected it might be Bear Scat. I hiked a half mile more down the trail when I saw a big black shape moving around in the bushes. Then figure stood up for a moment and then took off running super fast deeper into the woods. At first it confusing due to seeing a black shape moving around in the shady bushes and then I took action grabbing my container of bear spray. People might think black bears are just in the back country, but bears are also around wooded trails in suburban neighborhoods due to easy meals due people's garbage.

They have migrated into Missouri and their population has begun to explode here, even right up to St. Louis county. I use to not have to worry about bear while hiking. Now I have a decent chance of running across a bear while hiking. This video taught me some things and I appreciate it.

Bear spray is much weaker than the sprays used to deter humans. It's around 1.0% capsaicin whereas the stuff you'd use against a human is more like 4.0 - 5.0% . A lot of mammals are more sensitive than we are.

Very helpful and informative! We have a growing amount of grizzly's up in our area. 12 years ago a neighbour of ours was charged by a mother grizzly with cubs while he was doing some photography of elk in our oat field (bears love oats). She came right upon him and he only had a machete to defend himself. He managed to get her in the jugular but both his arms were very seriously injured. She did die afterwards. The wildlife police wouldn't let our neighbour have the hide and twice they tried to get our Dad to falsely accuse him of trespassing so that they could charge him for killing a griz. Didn't work because our Dad did give him permission. Grizzly's are basically sacred up here and one would be in more danger from the law for killing a griz than he would if he killed a man! Anyways, thanks for your insight and experience with black bears. Really appreciate the first hand stories. Greetings from Northern Alberta!

I just met fully grown big belly brown bear male (8 feet beautiful blonde-tan) where I was fishing 2 weeks ago. I smelt him (mix between cow dung and aged seaweed), but I didn't hear any noise, or he didn't show up first while I was fishing. As I was walking out of river to take lunch, that's when he came out of forrest 200 yards away into the shallow hunting for salmons.
He didn't mind my presence for few minutes giving me enough time to ready for next action including taking iPhone snap shot, but I didn't leave the site too quickly to make sure he see humans are not easily intimidated making sure not to set bad example (or give up good spot too eagerly). But he turned his head towards me and fixed his gaze - that expression I had to take a good guess quickly.
Wind has been blowing from my side to him all the time, so he already knew my presence. I took out my bear spray (OC-17 police grade) from holster just in case, but not confident something so little can do any good on big animal like him. He didn't change his posture, so I guessed that's his body language to stay off his dining room. I already caught & released enough fish, so I raised my both hands - one with fishing rod and one with spray hoping he saw me well-equipped while taking side steps to slowly walk back towards entry path until trees blocked our sight - when I started to walk back in fast pace.
Not sure this was proper procedure and I may have been too paranoid reading for defense too early.

I had a close encounter with a mountain lion last week in Colorado. Just after dark I met one on the trail at about 50 yards when my headlamp lit his eyes up. Not yet knowing what it was that I was seeing, I continued walking towards the eyes. It wasn't until about 30 yards away that I could clearly see it was a mountain lion and was not going to run away as I approached. I stopped and calmly took a few steps back while I grabbed my bear spray. I made loud noises but he didn't run away. Instead he charged at me, stopping at about 15 yards while I stood my ground. I was ready to use my bear spray but waiting until he came within the effective range (35 Feet). re retreated to his original position. I spoke loudly and firmly, telling him to leave. He charged again and stopped short of bear spray range yet again. We both stood there for a few moments. He was waiting for me to run. I stood firm. He eventually moved to the side 20 yards. I proceeded down the trail, never turning my back on him until I lost sight of his eyes. I still had another mile to the car from that point. I would spin around every few steps the entire remaining mile to the car. I luckily watched a few videos on the subject ahead of my trip. I think if I had ran he would have killed me.

@@sunflower-oo1ff I was out hunting elk. They are most active at dawn and dusk. In order to get to where the elk are it requires some travel in the dark in the mornings and evenings. This has been a human behavior for hundreds of thousands of years. I guess night travel is part of the adventure. I wouldn't change anything about my experience. I learned about animal behavior and what is needed to survive an encounter like this. As a result, I was able to share my story with others and potentially save a life in the future. 🙂

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - FYI - IF and when you perform a Test Spray when you buy a new canister? Make sure after you do that test spray... that you IMMEDIATELY vacate the general area in which you executed that Test Spray to confirm your new canister works fine. I did not feel wind or breeze the day I did this, did my Test Spray, was impressed by the cloud stream it produced. Then I was slowly/calmly picking back up my toiletries back up off the ground. And that's when it happened... first... I felt a tiny droplet land on my eye, milliseconds later I felt some land on my inner elbow and back of the knee. The next few milliseconds later I started to feel the burn in my eye and did a mad-dash sprint back to the truck and profusely rinsed my eye with water and a clean towel. And also washed those other areas. Even used some Scent-Away wipes because I planned on hunting that day. Even after all that washing of just that tiny bit that got on me, it went like this... this happened like at 7am. It was summer and already like 85 F. The areas which had contact were throbbing/pulsating with a burning sensation I'd say about like a 2nd degree Sunburn. While hiking and moving along the burn feeling was tolerable, but when I'd find some shade and stop for a moment to drink some water and let some heat out... the burning/throbbing sensation would start to increase (maybe because the air was stopped now and not flowing over my skin anymore to cool it?) and it would increase to where it was uncomfortable enough that it made you want to begin walking again just so the burning feeling would calm back down a little bit to more tolerable levels. I had to put on my liner gloves to protect my hand which caught some of it. When that Hot summer sunlight fell upon it it was too uncomfortable to leave it uncovered. This feeling I'm describing lasted until about 2pm that day.

I accidentally discharged a 1/2 second burst from my bear spray while I was getting my backpacking gear together in my basement. The AC was running and I ran upstairs to find my daughter already coughing and told her to run out to the back porch. I went around the house opening doors and windows with a t-shirt over my face. The spray really did not burn but made me gag and choke and I could not breath. It took about a half hour for the spray to dissipate. Luckily my wife was still at work. So the lesson here is not to mess with the safety on the can while still inside the house!

Had a Small black bear approach us in NJ. He walked towards us and kept looking around. We, wife and I, stood tall arms raised screaming. I looked for rocks to bang together but no rocks around. The bear came within 5 feet. When I growled or roared as loud as I could he left us. This whole thing lasted 3 minutes. I know it was 3 because I had my gps tracker on and later I saw we were stopped in that spot for 3 minutes. We did not have bear spray. My wife is now too afraid to hike and I’m afraid as well. I’ve got a hunting knife I’m going to carry and need to buy bear spray. Going to get two like you suggest. The knife makes me feel better but I know hand to paw combat is a last resort. Like the video and wanted to share. I’m sure the bear that approached us was young and curious but we feel lucky to have walked away.

One thing that makes this video better than any other I have seen is you give a detailed explanation of how to use bear spray and explain how long it lasts. Ive seen many videos where it seems like when you fire the spray it unloads the whole can in one go, so it is good to know you do have control over how much you spray and know how short it lasts. Fantastic video!

I have had two encounters, one just a week ago. I hike a 2.3 million acer preserve in Massachusetts. This specific encounter my wife (a photographer) was lying on the ground setting up a tripod to shoot a beautiful sunrise and I myself was slowly turning and looking around as I always do ( Harry Nillson cranking on my Bose headphones) I turn and look to my left and there is a 400lb black bear walking across the path 40 feet from us! She's on the ground in a prawn position and I am looking for her backpack! ( Our rule is to know where the spray is so I can grab it, that day I did not have my camo pants with the side pocket I had on tactical pants) I found myself speechless and basically grabbed her by the ear and lifting her up saying " bear! Bear!) These bears here are used to people but rest assured are no pet! Luckily he wandered across the path like business as usual, I learned two very valuable lessons that very second, one was holster that spray on me and two keep those dam headphones out of my ears! The ability to hear is just as important of a asset as being able to see.
Second encounter same area and it was a female with cubs, we came over a slight hill and saw her about a eighth of a mile away. We stood close together and walked backwards until she and the cubs were out of sight, no mock charge, we were at a good distance away.
I hope there is not a third time and I am glad I did not have to use any spray. Lesson...... Keep those headphones out of your ears!!!!! I have hiked this area for six years and became just a bit to comfortable.

40 years of hiking, Black Bears never an issue, carry and no how to use for Grizzly when necessary, important to know how to use, Forest Service in Montana runs classes, ones that you do hands on with a fake bear coming at you, recommend for any hiker, especially in Grizzly areas, key is only use if necessary, do NOT unload, actually, 3 short low sprays, save last 4 only if necessary. Check out classes, REI also offers them in West.

Great information for hikers and those who like to walk in the woods and mountains. Thanks William - great service you are providing.
My secret growing up was to wear a jingle bell on my shoes. Get a pet bell or baby shoes bell and put them on your shoes. You are letting them know where you are and they can avoid you or not. You alert them to where you are traveling basically. Very rarely will an animal stalk jingle bells :o)
Animals aren't predators to humans unless ill or very hungry and sick. Most will run away and I like to forewarn them :o) I have a booming voice like my father - better I not talk to them in the woods or it startles and surprises folks sometimes . . . soooooo I JingALingALing instead.
However, being in a spot where you run into them frequently - you must be prepared and have a game plan. You laid it all out well William - Good Content!
I would not want this experience, especially with a Grizzly. Then I would be in need of adult diapers (heavy duty) as well - gets expensive for the diapers and the bear spray - you know what I mean?

My concern has always been that the spray will just aggravate a grizzly and make them want to come at me even more aggressively. If they bluff charge, how do I know at which point this is the real deal and I need to start spraying? I've only ever had a black bear cub walk across my path and he wasn't interested, but boy did we keep our eyes out for mama. We're going to Glacier Natl Park next week which is grizzly country, and I'm a lot more worried about them! We've seen some reports lately of grizzlies just attacking because they're agitated by the heat and the presence of humans. Seems like it's pretty unpredictable.

It’s a good question , I know an experienced Kodiak Brown Bear Guide who claims they are ineffective. He claims to have used it and it didn’t seem to bother the bear much. He snuck up on the bear and sprayed it in the face and it just walked away not aggressive and not seemed to be irritated at all. I live in Alaska and frankly I don’t worry about black bears at all, In Grizzly country I try to always carry a large caliber rifle. In high wind conditions sprays are useless. An acquaintance of mine was severely mauled by 3 Grizzly’s spray would have been useless in that situation. You need to be able to start shooting when they are 60 or more feet away. They are incredibly fast if you wait till they are 15ft away you have zero reaction time.
