    I live in British Columbia Canada, we have alot of big cats up here. I go fishing alot, and the only time I ever seen one was when it ran across the road in front of my truck going up a mountain road. It was gone and up a 15ft bank in about 3 seconds flat. Thing was way bigger than expected. I fear them much more than bears. I've probably encountered many more but just never noticed them. Gives me the creeps sometimes when I'm out in the middle of nowhere alone.

    Carry a gun. Always carry a gun. You dont have to shoot the animal but... the sound hurts thier eirs hundreds of times more than ours. A mama with cubs the cubs may not even notice you or wanna' be your friend. Mama sees you as a threat and sound will not scare them. But a full grown bear in a rage spray will not work. Sound wont work either. Regardless of bear most people know SOS. The sound of one travels farther than an airhorn. Three shots spaced evenly. Wait and another three shots and so on.

    I have been hiking, backpacking, more, for some 40 years. I agree with every single thing you say. I've even seen a mom and cubs, to a side, she just sort of looked at me as the kids were happily playing, climbing a nearby tree. Almost every black bear I've seen either runs off, or once it sees/smells you, and sees you're not a threat, ignores you. I've seen one brown bear in the Sierras from a bit of a distance. It headed the other direction. I saw another raiding a campground where people left food out. I talked to a backcountry ranger from the southern Sierras who had seen several brown bears. She mostly treated them the same as black bears, but she did say on a moderately travelled trail deep in the forest one time she and another ranger had 3 brown bears follow them from about 100' away for a while. They were apparently wondering if the rangers would drop food, make a mistake and leave something yummy behind. Unnerving, if not threatening. Never seen a grizzly in the wild, though I did see tracks in the Gallatin National Forest in Montana. That was close enough for me. Never seen a polar bear, don't want to.

    Where I live I used to encounter them about 3 times a year and they almost always saw me before I saw them even though mentally I am always thinking I need to be watching where I put my feet. Put my feet within striking distance at least 3 times. Twice inside one of my buildings. Didn't rattle just tried to get away and both times the only reason I knew was there scales make a scraping sound almost like hissing maybe when they are moving across cement. 2 Western diamondback close to 36". The other semi adult one was in a rock outcropping and I went to get a container for catch and release and about the time I was thinking "odd I don't see it anywhere" it rattled behind me. That might give you an idea how well they blend in with their surroundings. I've since put 36" hardware cloth with half inch spacing around my compound. And I only see one or two a year usually juveniles. I do wonder about Tourniquet suspect their are tradeoffs. Use it and you may lose the appendage you apply it to but it may buy you time before you become incapacitated. The other thing I wonder about is in the old days they sold kits to lance yourself at the site of the wound but they discourage that nowadays. I suspect even an incision right between the fang marks isn't necessarily going to flush any venom out because it is injected into your tissue and your bleeding is going to be coming from veins and arteries?

    • @William180
      @William180 12 днів тому

      Wow, it sounds like you’re in an area where they are a lot of rattlesnakes that you have to really watch out for. Thank you for the extra input and great ideas. Thank you for watching my brother.

    • @antares4141
      @antares4141 12 днів тому

      @@William180 Yes, south central NM. I watch but they almost always catch me off guard. Fortunentally half the time they rattle when I get near them. I read on google only 1 in 600 bites are fatal which surprised me because of how traumatic the bites are. A few people have posted on youtube about their experiences which I found very interesting. One had a half a million dollar hospital bill. Most people out here kill them on site which is a shame. My dog cornered a 48" one which I killed cause I was afraid it would get away if I tried to catch it. I still feel bad about that. They are amazing animals! If you look at my channel I tried training my dog with a shock collar to stay away from them but that backfired on me she started looking for them. She dug a baby less than 12" up in my yard in november it was in the mid 20's the night before so it must have been hibernating. When I ran up and yelled at her to get away she got brave and picked it up in her mouth and got bit. She had swelling on the top of her snout and the skin dropped around her throat which is common for cattle out here also. She cleared up in about 3 days and was practically normal in a week. Vet didn't believe me because of the time of year maybe, that and the lack of severity in swelling she said occurs within an hour or so. Pictures I have seen online look horrendous! Treated her with benadryl. Said it was probably a spider. We have lots of black widows out here also. Wonder though about vaccines and immunity and weather she got immunity from this or how long immunity lasts. Also venom needs to enter the bloodstream to cause damage so in theory you could ingest it which of course is highly discouraged but intriguing none the less.. When their rattles get wet it suppresses the sound. I know this cause I tried to cool and hydrate one before I moved him. It is said that moving snakes often ends up being a death sentence because they have difficulty finding shelter and water so I release them late afternoon thinking being they have 15 20 hours to find a rat hole to get into which is where I surmise they go during the day. They do love homesites with lots of garbage around they can find shelter in and lots of homeowners put out water for wildlife which they no doubt take advantage of. My yard being an offender with the garbage they can hide in I quit putting out water for wildlife. There is a wifes tail babies are more dangerous because they don't know how to conserve their venom this is false the bigger they are the more venom they have and will use if they feel threatened. But they don't necessarily have to use it they can and do control how much they inject depending on how threatened or pissed off they might be. There is a thing called a "dry bite" where you get bit but don't suffer any adverse effects and everything in between. I would not want to piss off a 48" diamond back out here.

    • @antares4141
      @antares4141 12 днів тому

      In the desert you are more likely to encounter them near areas where water accumulates arroyos and the like. Also large rock outcroppings and areas with dense vegetation and I assume rabbit and rat holes they can get shelter from the heat. It only takes minutes in the brutal sun out here to cause them to overheat and die. So they have to have shelter like this during the hot summer months.

    • @antares4141
      @antares4141 12 днів тому

      @@William180 Lots of times you will find them along side of houses because rats race up and down along side the walls. I find them inside my buildings because I often just leave the bay doors open and to them it's a dark place a cave and the cement is cool very and there are always rats trying to infest. So very appealing other than there are no readily available water sources.

    Great information here! I live in southern AZ and along with western diamondbacks we have black tailed rattlesnakes and the dreaded Mojave rattlesnakes. We also get the occasional sidewinders. Black tail and Mojave are angry snakes and the venom of the Mojave is lethal if you don’t get medical aid sooner than later. God Bless the rattlesnakes that actually RATTLE. That’s all we can ask of them is a fair warning to respect them and leave them alone. Snake season is upon us so great job and timing with your video!

    From a Veteran, Who has not hiked as a civilian ultralight hiker, but has hiked with a pack for years, this is what your video sounds like to me: Leave behind your only sense of direction, your only sense of location {a woman died after getting lost going to bathroom}, your only tool/protection, bear alerts (because they annoy you), comfort items (because you don’t value them), comprehensive first aid (bc it’s not like you’re out in the middle of nowhere), don’t bring any emergency power supply, screw sitting down after hiking all day bc you don’t want to sit-but the umbrella- you think it’s good so carry it for 2k miles… Now, that said, I get the whole weight thing, but advising people not to bring a compass and a map or any other items that could keep them alive during the hike is a little irresponsible. Do the research and look up the deaths that have come from people being ill prepared on the Appalachian trail, and try not to advise people to get themselves in the same situation.

    I wonder how many people that took your advice got lost, maimed, or killed. To summarize this grossly negligent, pompous opinion piece vainly veneered as "veteran advice", the following things are "stupid things that don't make sense.": 1. Bringing means to process wood, even as light as a folding saw, is silly. 2. You don't need a compass. Having alternate means of navigation is just plain goofy. Forget P.A.C.E (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency) planning, that'll never happen to ME or YOU. 3. Knives are ridiculous. Forget the advice of renowned wilderness living and SURVIVAL expert Mors Kochanski revering the knife as the single most useful tool in the wilderness. 4. Being concerned about Bears just shows your inexperience. Taking safety measures is unnecessary. Really, you're just increasing your likelihood of being eaten. All those bear aware posters, flyers and infomercials the Forest service and S.A.R. puts out is propaganda made by BEARPHOBICS. 5. First aid kits, ESPECIALLY LIFE SAVING TRAUMA KITS, are excessive. Just take some ibuprofen sissy. 6. Books... Lol What you reading for? What you ever gon' learn from Mors Kochanski, Horace Kephart, or Henry David Thoreau? 7. TOPOGRAPHY MAPS! P.A.C.E. Navigation is for scaredy-cats. "Ladies you're not going to need P.A.C.E. navigation hehe." 8. Solar panels are not needed, don't concern yourself with being able to charge your phone and in-reach. P.A.C.E. is just funny to true veterans. 9. Camp chairs. Comfort is over rated, plus, when you get lost and have a broken bleeding wound from a bear attack, and are starting to feel cold because the sun is setting, and you have no means to process wood or start a fire, sitting down on a comfy chair is the least of your concerns. 10. Ferro rods. Just carry one means of starting a fire, redundancy and P.A.C.E. is for ABSOLUTE NOVICES. What you will recommend is an umbrella though… Yeah, ok...

    The only time I've hadvto use my bear fogger was on 2 very scary belligerent men who were definitely out to do harm If you think the stuff works on Bears you should see the effect it has on skinny meth heads

    I forgot the AT is basically a highway. The only real wilderness is the last hundred miles. The AT is now populated with UA-camrs and wannabe adventurers

    I got lost up on the high ground. It snowed and the trail marks disappeared on the bald mountain. We ended up climbing on all fours up the side to the top again and followed the crest back to civilization. The trail can be hard to follow in the winter.

    No books? I've never hiked without one. One paperback doesn't hurt those of us that prefer a real book. No battery or reception needed, and they feel better in the hand. All the other advice was great, i especially like the last two tips.

    I get if you're going on a month-long hike you may not want to carry a firearm but I really cannot see the downside of the extra insurance especially if you're only going for a day hike

    My husband and I went to Nags Head in November of 2023 for 3 weeks. Never had been to OBX before. We loved it. Had a great house right on the ocean with a wrap around porch and big windows everywhere. Everyone we know asked why the heck do you go to the beach in November and first week of December? Well you answered it perfectly..Weather is great, not too hot or cold and you have the entire place to yourself.. We go back again this year for a month. Leaving early November. Not to mention the homes are a great deal for rentals. Our house rents for 5600 a week in July and August. We got it for 800 a week. Maybe we will see you there this year! We are from northern MD. Just subscribed and hope you put out some new video from OBX or the mountains.
