Great Instructional Video! This humorous presentation works well with this very serious subject. I hope I don't need to actually use my bear spray but it's good to know how to use it properly. It's also very important to know how to avoid conflict and/or what to do after spraying a bear, which this video covers quite well. Thank you!
Jinzo lol i live in Canada and i have to walk 10 mins to school bus stop, and last month walking home for school i saw a blck bear just down the road, it was scary 😱
Great informative video. One of the funnest and most intelligent presentations i have ever seen. Living in n. NY, I am always aware of my surroundings and thankfully have never encountered bear on hikes. So Professional. Thank YOU. Take Care.
Ty for showing us close up how to remove the safety on the bear spray. I always wondered how and you don't want to wonder how when in such a position. Question where did you purchase the belt for bear spray?? Very informative .
Thanks for the informative video. I liked how carry, deployment, and use were broken down and explained. However, I do believe I can pass on some valid criticism on the subject of the "last line of defense" first voiced by The Examiner's Dave Smith, whose articles are unfortunately not available on their webpage anymore. Due to Stephen Herrero's 1999 study, Tim Smith's 2008 study, and their joint study in 2012 bear spray has become known as the ultimate bear defense tool, however the latter two survey only small sample sizes of 66 and 72 respectively, discount incidents when bear spray is not accessed quickly enough, and 30% or more of the cases in Smith's study involved professionals hazing bears. Meanwhile, the 2012 study addressing firearm effectiveness actually did take into account incidents where users failed to fire in time and only examined incidents of aggressive bear behaviour, whereas the earlier bear spray studies only accounted for aggressive behaviour in less than half of each of their sample sizes. These discrepancies notwithstanding, another Alaskan study by Miller & Tutterrow circa 1999 found firearms to be effective, resulting in injuries to users less than 2% of the time in over 2,000 incidents. Instead of addressing these findings, Herrero and Smith conveniently claimed they were the first to approach the topic. Obviously, not everyone has the opportunity or the desire to lug around an 8lb shotgun on their hike, but they should not be entirely dismissed as effective protection.
There is new research that shows that the original research was both biased toward bear spray and flawed in it's execution. All of the research done against guns was using incidents where the bears were aggressive whereas less than 1/3rd of the incidents using bear spray were aggressive bears with the majority being passive situations. People have been mauled by enraged bears that simply ran through the spray to attack. I would encourage everyone to do their own research.
has anyone seen the episode of “I Survived” where the two guys in the Canadian wilderness couldn’t get the safety off their can of bear spray? They were stuck out of contact until the helicopter came to pick them up at pre-arranged time/place. Against the odds, they survived. However, they were mauled. I don’t remember the details except one was scalped by the bear. The bear literally took off the top of his head.
Good job, The funny thing is I have been using that same song while backpacking for more that 20 years... I sound about the same as you when singing it...
This is mostly very good. You have two major inaccuracies that keep me from using this video. 1) Proven is the wrong word. There is ONE peer-reviewed paper by credible biologists indicating that spray could be more effective than firearms. Additional rigorous research is needed before you use the word "proven." 2.) This business of not looking a bear in the eye is a myth. Bear behavior experts don't agree. How would you know when to spray? Otherwise, this is very, very good and fun.
I heard about a fishing spot up in the mountains. So I get there yesterday and see the bear warning on the beginning of the trail that leads to the pond. On my way I see so much bear shit, probably 15 piles and I see fresh paw prints on the sandy trail. I was by myself and so scared because I have never been hiking in my life and I didn't know much about bears but I just researched and it says black bears rarely attack and there have only been 59 deaths since 1900 in North America. I'm gonna buy some bear spray now but I'm relieved that black bears seem pretty cool about just trying to live their life and not attacking humans.
NEVER set your alarm clock to your favorite song. Before long, it won’t be your favorite song anymore. Then again, if it’s Sting singing it doesn’t matter anyway. Go for it. Ugh.
Knowing me I'd end up spraying myself in the face and then when I'm writhing in agony on the ground the bear would jump on top of me and have his way with me.
The only time I'd recommend a firearm over bear spray is for people that spend their time in dense undergrowth where they could walk right up on a bear. This is why Alaskan hunting guides prefer large rifles over bear spray.
In general good advice about hiking in bear country and bear spray might work ok with an inquisitive black bear or even a surprise encounter with a black bear. However if you wait until a Grizzly gets within 12 feet you are going to get shredded. This is especially true if it is charging. A grizzly bear was once clocked while running at 41 miles per hour (66 kph) by a ranger in Denali National Park, in Alaska. That thing will be tearing you apart in less than a second or 800 pounds of Grizzly will hit you and run over you at 60kph before it turns around and finished you off. At 4:10 in the video it shows a "depiction" of a grizzly, the size of a dog, walking causally towards our towering hero with his bear spray deployed. Yeah, right, wait for it. I'll put my money on that grizzly being several times as big, lunching into a full sprint at 30-50 feet and turning our hero into little more than a pepper flavored blood stain. When it comes to Grizzly bears, he can keep his bear spray, I'll take a 45-70 any day of the week.
You need to work on your acting. And directing :) Otherwise, it's a great video. I'm totally surprised no one asked this before me: Have you had the chance to actually use the spray against a bear??? How was it - din you manage to fire when it was in range? Did it run or did turn around for another chance to grab you?
i really really hate to say this but how about a bunch of guys with a bunch of guns holstered and safeties off ready to fire. Because theres just so many variables with spray like you run out and if you miss from wind and you have a safety and it doesnt look like its as fast and easy as a gun. I know bear spray deters bears the best and doent kill them where as a gun will not stop a bear because not powerful enough but personally i would prefer many guys with guns at least 4 guys with me all with guns. i would not go out alone unless was in a wide open land and had a shotgun with buckshots and bear spray also but actually id never go out alone i would prefer 3-4 people preferably 4 people all armed to the teeth with bear spray and guns. Thats just me because a bear can just take one swipe and its over and they are fast and can come up from behind and you could wake them and they run 40 mph so youd better have more guys there better chance. best thing is stay out of bear territory because you are in their home basically.
Entertaining, but the video gets an essential emphasis wrong. Says spray is 'most effective' when the bear is '12 feet' away, which some may infer to mean you wait for it. If the bear is charging, that is too close, and could be deadly- for you. The idea is not only to hit the bear on the face with the spray. You are trying to make him go through a cloud of spray to get to you. So, spray when the bear is 30 to 60 feet away- depending on the brand you use, provided he is charging. Do this even if the spray does not reach all the way to the bear. For your safety, watch video and read details on any major national park website.
Here is the SAFEST WAY to use Bear spray, when the 🐻 charges, wait until it's about 7-10 FEET from you, BY this time you will be dropping the spray, then SHOOT YOUR GUN AT SAID BEAR UNTIL DEAD! Actually I love Bears and would only harm one in defense of family and friends or self. Bear spray is a huge risk because some 🐻 act like 🐻 spray is just seasoning. A motivated bear will most likely NOT BE DETERRED. NO REAL GUIDE WOULD BE COMFORTABLE IN THE BUSH WITHOUT A GUN PERIOD.
If a big-bore rifle will stop a charging pachyderm, doesn't it follow that it would be even more effective to stop the much smaller, soft-skinned, bears? I do, however, see the point to using bear spray in Alberta: While black bears are huntable in Alberta, grizzlies aren't.
first impression was this video was gonna be cheese... but this is very good and informative!!! well done
He's cheese-aware and owns it
its both

This is exactly what DiCaprio needs to watch
thanks for the tip on holding the can.. most people don't realize that bear spray actually packs a kick to it when you spray.. good tip!!
Not only an informative video, but I totally cracked up when you were singing, so thanks for giving me a good laugh!
This video is hella Canadian.
Outstanding video. Best I've seen so far. To the point and thorough. Thank you!
This guys is hilarious, and a great teacher!
Bears do occasionally hunt people, so keep that in mind.
watching in 2016, from England a country with no wild bears.
same
Jinzo lol i live in Canada and i have to walk 10 mins to school bus stop, and last month walking home for school i saw a blck bear just down the road, it was scary 😱
Great video! I'm an avid outdoorsman in Alberta but have never had to deploy my spray. Great to see what it actually does!
Informative and hilarious!! Thank you
Definitely aim low, because they lower their head when they charge (much like a dog).
great video!

The video is very interesting and it is very well done! Thanks for all the advices.
Thanks for this! Entertaining and informative!
Great video. Very informative and comical!
no wonder bear runs away when it hears him singing. I would run as well...
Thanks, that was very helpful.
Canadians aren't "oddly hilarious". When we're hilarious it's because we damn well intend to be.
Great video!! I feel ready to explore the backcountry now
Great video, thank you!
Great advice, great video.
I love it on point with humor good job
Excellent vid!!! I have bear spray but didn't know how to use it, and I had it in my pack. Now I need one of those holsters you've got! Haha
only part of this I don’t understand:
back away and “speak softly” ???
I thought we were supposed to yell at them?
great video very informative will get my spray for future back country hikes
Thank you! Very informative while entertaining,
great information-thanks!
Awesome video! Very well done
nice work! thanks!
Very informative video!

i totally agree with bear spray or any pepper spray instead of shotguns, they are just wild not an enemy, i have some sets of pepper spray by the way.
LMAO for 20+ years that has been my go to song when hiking in bear country! I about died when I heard you sing it! You sing about the same a I do!
Fantastic...I didn't even mind the singing.
Very informative on what to do before needing to use the spray -- and then how to best use it, if you do. Keep singing! :)
Nice production, especially the vocals.

My luck would be the can fails...
Merci !
Informative and funny. Thank you
Gorgeous and smart!!!

excellent tutorial.
but the "Roxanne" was worth the price of admission alone.
SANG IT BABY.

Excelent report !!!!!!!
I hear "Counter Assault" is a good brand. Thats what I have ,though I've never had to use it.
Thank you so much ....... many a time do I come across bear, never had a problem and I do not know even how to use this so thank you )

Excellent! Could anyone recommmend the best Bear Spray brand that comes with a chest or belt harness?
The most dangerous bear is the one that stalks you, the one you don't see, and then in stealth mode charges you from behind. Be safe out there.
Nice video..

Good for Chicago residents. Ask Collin

Where can I get a human voice? I couldn't find one in the stores, or online.
Concealed bear spray.....i like it. They never knew who they were messing with be it four legs or two legs lolol
classic Canadian humor - funny as heck
I came here to leave a smart ass comment, but I liked it, nice job.
Another Albertan...make sure to drop a trail of cookies behind you...eat snacks in your tent. Bring along a friend who can't run as fast as yourself.
Good video with useful and correct demonstration
Personally if im in bear county the spray is already going to be in my hand haha
"Like they say up in Alaska you can always tell the brown bear scat. It has bells in it and it smells like pepper spray"
Once you deploy the spray and the bear retreats (assuming it does), do you walk? Haul butt out of there? Walk backwards? What?
Knowing me I'd end up spraying myself in the face and then when I'm writhing in agony on the ground the bear would jump on top of me and have his way with me.
What a jolly fellow.
this learned me how to use the Bear spray, and it ectually saved me. thanks urhm.... what was your name again?
nice video
Great video reminds me of Uncle Buck
4:08 yeah i'm dead if i have to be that close to a bear
get the host's name on the info. we loved him.
I've watched over 3,000 bear spray videos and all I wanna know is when's the bear showing up.
The only time I'd recommend a firearm over bear spray is for people that spend their time in dense undergrowth where they could walk right up on a bear. This is why Alaskan hunting guides prefer large rifles over bear spray.
OMG, lol ......sing like that and you'll have all the bigfoot critters riled up.
The active ingredient in both bear spray and mace is capsaicin. Mace is ten times stronger.
I'd much rather have a heavily armored tank If I were to encounter a bear Somehow I think that that would be far more effective at taking out the bear
great video. but you get the comment and the like because of that singing. A+ lol

I'm just going to stay out of there habitat. what about when it's a whole pack of them.
Excellent video, I would say the best so far, thanks a lot.. but do mind no to sing... again!
Its funny how he is talking about the the bear
But he is the bear

why not try to scare the bear away first-why do you feel the need to kill it?
Would this bear spray work on a raccoon
Roxanne! You don’t have to put on the red light! Roxanne!
“At close range” means like 5ft. No thx
Why not try it on s bear expert
a gov video that was actually good lol
Yo Bear!
if a bear ate him during this video I would subscribe.
Good video, but why so many walk-in and walk-out scenes? A bit distracting.
I’m only here because of WORLDSTAR!!
I got sprayed with that stuff once

actual useful information starts at 4:00
Rude! And not true at all!! I'd hate to be packing an expired can of bear spray. Plus its only 6+ minutes for God's sake!
Sprayed this stuff on my house. Dont do it. The air hurts its literaly pure capsaicin
Here is the SAFEST WAY to use Bear spray, when the 🐻 charges, wait until it's about 7-10 FEET from you, BY this time you will be dropping the spray, then SHOOT YOUR GUN AT SAID BEAR UNTIL DEAD!
