It is absolutely terrifying that you can have a mile head start over a bear, and it can still hunt you down.
It couldn't hunt a fit human down that had a mile head start though
@@babyfood9537 I’d say it would honestly depend. if there’s a building nearby ok but if it’s all open like this I’d say highly unlikely that you survive.
@@aleyorch44 I think a human serving longer tho. With the outside of that body of water I wonder if the avg 6”0 human can sprint or high knee through it if so you can play mind games with that bear for a little while a bear isn’t smarter than a human but a bear is naturally more fit for long term activities 😂

@@dankchewy2699 Nah a human is wayyy more capable of long term activities. But the bear is way faster. I’d say it all depends on the head start the human got and how hungry that bear is

Damn right 👍🏿
Yes... Thanks for that..
But what about the annoying commercial right before the video.
I'll put a "hell ya!" on that.

This heroic bear ran a mile to save that caribou from drowning, dragged him to safety and then performed CPR.
Unfortunately the caribou was feeling unappreciated and the bear said fuck it.
Wow was that hilarious! Very funny. Looked just like that .
Lol.
Sadly the caribou did not make it

His stamina is incredible. 500lbs? 10 miles an hour? 15 minutes? Not to mention his vision and smell over a huge distance. Incredible.

@@peterduxbury927 that works sometimes if you've spooked a grizzly and it attacks you out of fear/defense. However if it is a predatory attack like this, playing dead is only giving him an even easier meal. Fighting back (while obviously futile) is the better option.
I believe this was an excellent example of a bear in its prime. Old enough to know it could catch this caribou and to know how to catch it but young enough to actually do it. Plus this bear was likely in very good health. It hadn't been missing meals before this chase.
The bear was an absolute Gigachad.
yeah but that caribou was not too smart, it had a half-mile lead on the bear. Then took time to play in the water and stay in the water instead of continuing on land. I don't know maybe caribou are dumb animals...

Lol nope. And they eat you alive. That would be one brutal awful death.
And it's more terrifying when you realize that bears are also armed with 12 gauge semi automatic shotguns with magnum slugs.

@@kzz0r Yup. You'd need a gun. Can you imagine how terrifying it would be having a 1000lb grizzly chasing you? What would you do if you didn't have a gun? That would literally be a nightmare. Nothing you could do.
Good thing I'm armed 100% of the time anytime I'm in bear country. Because that bear would be taking either a few slugs to the face or a few .44 magnum hydrashocka into his stupid nose.
At the beginning when I saw the camera pan I was like "there's no way the bear's aiming for that caribou all the way over there, there's just no way". But then not only did the bear make it, it did it in one go without even pausing or slowing down. What absolute beasts these animals are
It was an injured animal that's why the bear caught it notice how far behind the bear was! Respect for the bear's conditioning. Learned something new today.
@@davidgivins1685 Yeah, but just the fact that the bear went for it in the first place, probably didn't even notice the caribou was injured at first, was just incredible to me

@@davidgivins1685 Indeed. I knew bears were strong, I was a little surprised when I learned how fast they are despite their body mass, but I thought the trade-off was that they had poor stamina. But I guess this video proves that bears are just good in all aspects and their only big disadvantages are that they don't travel in packs usually and can't eat sufficiently during winter
Sense of smell.
Can we just acknowledge the fact that the bear just did a whole Navy SEAL training course, & nailed it? Yeah he earned that meal.

The stamina is un real we as humans could not out run that and the sad part is they don't even give you the courtesy of killing you like a lion..they eat you alive and just start bite chunks out..

@@indridcold8433 apex
@@phalspar That is absolutely correct. People that say humans do not stand a chance in the wilderness without a powerful weapon, a vehicle, and specialised clothing are 100% correct. But my question to them is, why would anybody enter the wilderness without a powerful weapon, a vehicle to get them there, and without specialised clothing? Humans did manage to get a tiny bit more intelligence, even judging by the stupidest of us. They need to use their brain and go in armed, armored, and mobile. Our bodies may have been dealt a lemon by evolutionary standards. But why let that stop us. We have brains and high power weapons! Please use responsibly.
@@indridcold8433 Well, science and evolution made us unique. Our hands basically represent the massive difference respect to other predators, because we can use and improve our tools.
"Why didn't the bear turn?" When the caribou went back into the water.
It's because the bear knew if he swam out, the caribou could swim right back to shore and escape. The bear went to the bank to force the caribou to swim out farther. Bears are excellent swimmers.
Plus the bear would be swimming up river
Not only that but the bear knew it would tire the caribou out if it forced it to swim longer.
And you can tell this bear was an experience hunter paced himself first then once he crossed that first pond he kicked it into another gear
So it makes you wonder why did the caribou go back in the water?
@@wardosravin It most likely went back in the water because it was upstream of the bear, which forces the bear to either swim to shore and then run upstream and jump back in, or start swimming upstream. That caribou never would have escaped the bear on land. Most heard animals like caribou are sprinters, they stay in big herds and they all run different directions when attacked to confuse the predator. A grizzly can maintain a 15mph lope for an ungodly amount of time, so one v. one the caribou's only chance was to somehow lose the bear on the river.
Apparently, the caribou felt it was unable to ascend the far bank of the river and decided to return to the side it came from instead. The bear chose to get on land anticipating the caribous return to shore. When it realized the caribou reversed direction the bear did not hesitate to resume the pursuit. I think watching this will dispel any doubt about a brown bear's endurance let alone its speed.
I think it was hurt.
The caribou was hurt. The grizzly was using scent to track the caribou, not using sight. That's why the bear retraced the caribou's steps rather than pursuing directly through the water.
I wonder exactly what you are basing that on. The two guys that were filming this never suggested that was the case.
@@ironwolfgaming9632
Or the bear did that because it’s faster on land then in the water therefore he can cover more distance to be able to catch up to the caribou easier
The endurance of that grizzly is absolutely incredible. Their sense of smell is about 100X greater than average dogs (and average dogs around 200-300X greater than humans). Think how far that thing ran, then swam, and still had enough in the tank to catch it, kill it and drag it. Wow.

Yep bears have the best stamina out of any carnivores despite being heavier and weighed down by more fat bears can run longer than tigers or lions
Unfortunately the kill was disqualified and confiscated cos the bear failed to complete the final bicycle leg of the event.
A lion or tiger could never do that, even after all that running and swimming, neck snapping, dragging, and then ya gotta fight off a rival for the spoils. Unmatched power and stamina!

The caribou was either young or weak and thin and that’s why he was by himself. The bear though was incredibly strong and realized right away the caribou was an easy target.
The caribou was simply... dumb. Can't swim as nearly as good as the bear, but decided to escape through water...
I think caribou was injured, couldn't run. Otherwise it would outrun bear on land. Maybe caribou was bleeding too so bear tracked the blood.
Bears, like all predators, will pick off the weak and the sick or elderly because it’s easier than getting into a fight with something it can’t beat.Remember, wildlife have no medical insurance, and if they get injured trying to feed themselves, they just become prey too.

Prey is hard to come by in the north American tundra, unlike the African Savannah which is teeming with various bovine and antelope species... Scarcity + their time constraints due to hibernation has made the bear a much more motivated and relentless predator.

It's like one of those fever dream nightmares where you run away from that thing chasing you, but it keeps gaining and gaining on you
It amazes me just how far a bear can pick up another animal’s scent trail from so far away. There’s no way from the video that the bear was able to spot that caribou from that far a distance with its own two eyes. I’m also just as equally impressed that it was able to maintain its speed for that length of time despite all its girth.
Well said. I was thinking the same thing about the scent trail.
He followed its exact path across the bank though he would be able to see it if he looked
The Caribou thought " How can i use my speed and stamina advantage against this grizzly".. and proceeds to swim back and forth through the river.
swimming is what they use against a wolf pack, wolves run better on land but can't swim very well because of shorter legs, the caribou probably learned how to throw off a wolf and assumed bears were the same, but bears are far better than any deer adjacent existence in the water so it essentially was caught by its own assumption of what its normal predators would have done.
Interesting fact about bears is that when they travel between their feed and bedding areas, their preferred pace is a run. They will often run five miles or more at several different times of the day. This pursuit likely didn't have very much impact on the bears stamina.

You know when you read Lewis and Clark's diary it seems like every other entry they are describing a bear encounter. It makes you realize that America was once home to a huge number of bears, and they were the masters of the landscape.
A bear is nearly a ton of pure muscle. The other animal is a juvenile so it's muscles can't hold that much stamina. Just like the dude said this is a chess match. The animal thought the bear wouldn't swim across. It was wrong however it knew once the bear was going one direction it would need to hit the shore in order to change directions. The animal swims back up current the other way but it loses stamina while fighting the current. Unfortunately this chess match was already over in the very beginning when the bear was running all that distance. You have to imagine the bear knew then and knew the whole time it would get the kill. It wouldn't have pursued that initial long run otherwise. Bear knows what it's capable of and so did that animal. Interesting to see this long of a hunt. You'll never see that on the TV. This was a great watch. Cheers to the dudes who took the time to film it.
Cheers to your analogy of it. I enjoyed that very much thank you.

Why didn't the bear change the direction while in the water?

That bear is super fit. Running, swimming and weight lifting without any rest was incredible. Covered such a distance without stopping and carrying all that body weight. Wow impressive. Makes you realise that you could never outrun such a beast. Even with a mile head start!
You can never outrun it because of the speed advantage the bear has but the other way around a human can absolutly chase down a bear or any other animal, because humans have the greatest endurance of all animals
All wild animals are super fit. Urban humans don't even come CLOSE to the endurance of wild animals even if we spend our entire lives training in gyms

underrated
The caribou uses water to escape wolves that have tremendous stamina. What works for wolves, doesn't work for bear. The caribou should have kept running. Obviously a big mistake.
This is true, I agree, it probably was using the water strategy that it uses to escape the wolves. Cause wolves will track anything till it drops, but wolves don’t do water this deep,... but bears doooo. Oops.
How is it gonna keep running when its tired an cant run no more...smh
James Vickers When it comes to endurance, wolves can pretty much go forever. Caribou are next in line. Unless this caribou was sick or injured it could have outlasted the grizzly which has far less endurance than either wolves or caribou. That's why the large ungulates run to water when pursued by wolves. On land the wolves have the advantage, in the water the ungulates have the advantage, or at least a much better chance. They can stand in water a wolf has to swim in. This allows them to move faster in the right depth of water. It in turn allows them to use their defensive weaponry far more effectively. As you know, bears are great in water. Grizzlies have longer legs than wolves, they are incredible swimmers, and even in the water an ungulates defensive weaponry is almost useless against a powerful adult grizzly. So wolf, water, bear, run!
I have personally witnessed white tailed deer swim some amazing distances even when wounded.
Exactly, was thinking the same thing. Caribou was mistaking carnivores, lol.
I love how they criticize the bear like why doesn’t he turn and he swimming slow.
Obviously this isn’t the bears first time 😂😆
Well it was common sense to swim straight at it instead making that huge and unnecessary turn to get out of the water just to jump back in it again.
@@GForceIntel Yea but I think the bear had common sense not to be so obvious; it gave the impression it was going straight across the lake, assuming the deer saw it crossing, and followed him staying out of the deer's vision resulting in an awesome kill.

Everyones talking about the stamina of the bear but no ones noticing how the hell the bear saw its prey from that distance
Might have been chasing him earlier or caught a scent
It smelled and probably heard it when it was far away, bears have vision worse than humans and we can't see for nun
Bears are insanely smart. Bears are territorial, and know their terrains. This one, I’m sure, knew about the water up ahead; trap for prey, big mistake. Wolves in the water? Caribou can out-swim them. Not the bear. Also, notice the bear came out of the water, ran along the other shore to get a better angle on the caribou and close the gap aggressively. Intelligent creature. It also looks like fall, grizzlies especially can get very vicious that time of year. Again, very intelligent creatures, and as one person commented on here, “a lone caribou, is a dead caribou.” All not a good mix or situation for that caribou.
Bears are pretty much big cat gorilla human dogs
It's almost like the bear recognized the caribou was trying to use the current and was like "nice try!" And did the same thing

I’ve lived in Alaska for most of my adult life. My first summer there, Dad and I were heading to a river about 1/2 a mile from our lodge to fish. When we were done, we decided to take the long way back. On one of the deer trails we were walking, we suddenly saw this big brown shape about 50 yards in front of us; it was a grizzly. It caught our smell, whipped around and started charging us. I of course froze, but my Dad immediately charged are the bear screaming bloody murder with his hands up. The bear turned and went into the brush. Mind you, we had a rifle, but My Dad said she could be with cubs nearby and was just trying to protect. If that’s not balls idk what is.
That's what your supposed to do. Ever heard death metal? Do a good death metal growl, posture up and raise your arms and charge! It's a 75% win 25% lose chance. Never would expect that bear to make such a long chase! Incredible! If he wasn’t hungry when he started running, he sure was by the time he caught that caribou. Thanks for this post.
It was a young deer, but yeah. :P :)
People don't know that bears have a whole lot of stamina. They can run for a long time at a steady pace. Don't ever think you can outrun a bear. Even on a bike, you better never slow down cause they don't give up..
2:37 the bear doesn't turn immediately because it knows running on land is faster than running in water.
Not that it’s faster, but that he’ll expend less energy
@@teufelhunden8308 true
Exactly. And less energy. It's both
Yes great observation, also the bear knew in the water it could out swim the Caribou. Bears are adapted to swim.See how it closed the distance in the water quite quickly.
Which begs the question, why did the caribou go back into the water knowing the bear was still on chase and much closer,
Now thats a great video! No dumb music, a steady camera man, not to much talking over the video, and zoomed in after the bear made the kill. Nice work
What those guys don’t know is an even bigger bear is right behind them.
A sexy daddy bear.

Damn, I never would of thought a huge bear like that would have so much endurance. That is just amazing. And yes, no music, just the wind. Thank you SOO much for that.
The bears endurance and strength is just phenomenal.
Holy shit, I’m guessing it could only track the caribou that far by scent… really puts things into perspective. I backpack every now and then and tbh their ability to smell and track food that well is scary lol
I cannot believe that you've got such an amazing footage I have never seen anything so amazing you deserve an award for catching this I cannot believe how far the bear ran to catch it, just makes you think how amazing wildlife is and after all these millions of years that's how good the instinct has become
Dude… punctuation…
After seeing this, I have realized you would never outrun a Bear. That would suck to have that on your tail
Remember, you don't have to outrun the bear, just the slowest person you are with.
@@Grim1son even then when the bears finished you still better be running
and them mankind invented the gun...
Suck? No. It would be fatal. Nobody would out run that bear. You'd be its meal.
Grizzly bears can outrun race horses over short distances. You will not outrun them.
Thank you so much! No music! May God bless you! Subscribed!
Great footage. God honest capture and commentary. 1 million times better than the anything shown on the BBC.
The bear was smart continuing to go for the shore after the caribou entered the water again. It assured that the caribou would have to stay in the water and not have a chance to get away... he knew exactly what he was doing.
Great video!
The bear cut off the retreat and forced the caribou to swim. Caribou was toast as soon as it reentered the water.
It was toast when it was born, the bear had already caught his scent
The caribou didnt "let" the bear get that close for the same reason the bear swam straight to the bank instead of upstream after the prey. The bear knows the caribou is faster, so hes literally running it to death, similar to the way wolf packs would do. The caribou sat in the river that long trying to cool off, its probably been running like that for an hour or more.
Exactly.
The bear could’ve caught the Caribou way faster but animals are stupid. Evidently so are people judging by OPs comment here
Honestly, it looked like it had a limp the second it got out of the water. Might've injured it while swimming.
Django Leo what are you even going on about?
This reminded me of a nightmare I had as a kid where someone was chasing me from far away and I’m trying to run away in water and sand but could barely move. Imagine that’s how the caribou felt.
Thanks for the fact that you didn't add any annoying background music; that kind of music usually ruins or at least undercuts how good the video was in terms of content.
When you go out of breath on 3 flights of stairs.....this is certification that YOU'RE DEAD if you spot the bear a half mile away.

Dang that bear deserved every morsel .
Bravo Mr Bear 🐻 🦌 👏
and thankyou for capturing this incredible feat of endurance ❤
the caribou agreed.
I don't think it was his eyesight it was his nose picking up the scent. He was tracking it with his nose.
You clearly missed the point! Look how he didn't chose the shorter route to kill him but went off by scent alone.
Just imagine after they say “wow he’s tracking that caribou from so far and it doesn’t even know!” the bear turned right 😅
Imagine if a bear sneaked up behind these guys and the show the other bear was putting on was a decoy to grab their attention so they wouldn't notice.
Cannot believe how far and fast this bear can run and just continues...
Once the bear decided to he wanted him, he went and got him. It's scary how fast focused and relentless that bear was.
How focused the bear was, that bear didn't weather. The endurance, the speed. That was a good kill well-deserved
I can t tell you how grateful I am for not pestering us with music.
Its crazy and scary how much ground a bear can cover and for as big as they are how fast and how much stamina they have. That was amazing to watch and can only imagine what it was like to witness it happen in front of you
Simply stunning footage. There can't be many people that have witnessed something like that let alone film it 👍👍👍
This is probably the best animal chase video I've ever seen. Respect for that bear
Wow the endurance on that bear was impressive!
Bear : "I'll give you a 5 minute head start."
Human : "there's no way you'll catch up."
I'm climbing a tree and wait for it to climb up. Then get him at point blank range.
@@jimmyjohnjuan Smart and he won't be able to maneuver that well.
A human would have lived with a 5 minute head start.
I, as one, think that all of you people are still being dumb. How far can you run when you have a couple of hours head start?? The bear is not doing anything abnormal when he runs after that caribou at a minimum of 30 mph or up to 40 mph. Have you ever really looked at the tall trees up there where they live.... there just isn't any " tall " tree's up there.
I had no idea that bears got this much stamina and endurance
So much for the old story, bears can only run fast for a short distance.
Lesson learned..I just need to run faster than you !
Faster and longer clocked at 30-35 for long periods it's all about if they lose interest in you like a old ex that just disappeared lol
@@jaym5619 that took a dark turn lmao
Brown Bears got lots of stamina. Its not like feelines that are empty after a minute.
@Gregoryl v rule # 1...lol
@@craigbielsky115 rule #1 stay out of bear country.
I like how a lion would stalk the prey while the bear just randomly runs into a huge opening to chase down the prey
Lions hunt as a group and corner prey, but they're the only cats that do this. Most cats are ambush predators.
Because cats have crappy stamina so rely on ambush at close quarters. A bear has good enough stamina to just run down its prey.
@@drownthepoor lions also stalk/ambush hunt. I just thought it was funny how the bear gives 0 fucks and decided to just run the prey down

Imagine recording THIS bear when there could have easily been ANOTHER bear bearing down on you from a mile away while you were distracted by this takedown.
That's what i was thinking. What if they turned around and noticed them recording from far away. _then start galloping your way_ rip
It's shocking to see so many people commenting that they had no idea a bear can run that fast and with that kind of stamina. A bear can run up to 25 and 30 miles per hour. This is why bear experts tell you if a bear is tracking you, don't run because you will never outrun a bear.
Bears are faster than people initially, but humans can outrun pretty much any land animals. Though escaping a bear when it is litterally right behind you is impossible, people can out run a bear given distance.
@@iseedeadchickens789 Usually when a bear is chasing you, it's right behind you. Bears don't start chasing you from a quarter of a mile away buddy. ... and what human can run full speed for a quarter of a mile.
If you think you can outrun a bear, I'd like to see that.
What will happen is you will turn up missing and people will find bear droppings laced with bits and pieces of your shirt and pants in it, that you were last seen wearing on the day you disappeared. LOL
...
No.,people cannot outrun bears...bears can run as fast as horses and have been clockd at over 50 km/hr for 30 minutes, sustained. No human can outrun a bear.@@iseedeadchickens789
Kudos to the cameraman for holding the camera still.
This is one of the most incredible videos in all of YT. Your narration makes it even better. I had no idea that Grizzlies had such endurance and speed for their size.
Imagine having that thing chase you down, first it’s just a little dot, then you can hear it splashing in the water, then you hear the paws against the ground, the heavy breathing, then you feel its breath against your neck and Game over.😮
5 nights at Freddy's
To be devoured by an animal and staying alive through it would be the most terrifying way to die.
No, not game over. Then you're eaten alive. THEN it's GAME over.
While the bear is still just a little dot, I would have it between the 3 little dots on my rifle
If you’re a human you’re fine. Bears false charge us over 98% of the time and then back away and leave. Other 2% you can use a gun or bear spray.
Thank you for NOT playing music in the background. Greatly appreciated.
That was incredible. There had to have been something impaired with that caribou that the bear noticed, that it would be that confident to continue that long of a chase... Never has a meal been more well deserved.
Or the bear was starving lol
That Bear knew something we didn't. All things being equal, that Caribou should've gotten away with the Bear having given up long ago. Yet the Bear kept going. He knew this caribou was affected in some way.
This is a nice little bit of wildlife footage
Or it knew if it didn't eat soon it wouldn't have the stamina to run for as long as it did this time, which means if it didn't get this meal it might not get the next one too, so hunger and adrenaline combined maybe? I can't imagine bears chase down a meal with this much determination every time.

@@willstuart4504 Yep, as the earth gets warmer and the ice melts more, the bears have to swim where they would normally be able to walk and run.

WOW, INCREDIBLE FOOTAGE AND DATA. For those of us who want to know just how strong grizzlies actually are, this footage shows us everything about their level of strength and endurance. Its incredible how it not only pursued the Caribou over vast distances, including land and water, before it reached it's target, yet still had enough energy and the strength to pull it out of the lake with ease. Absolutely amazing animals.
A bears stamina compared with it size is absolutely unbelievable
The strength and stamina of that bear were just awe inspiring.
Moral of the story- when being chased by a bear never stop running
