I wonder if anyone noticed that although the bear was pretty far off and could never have seen the caribou, yet he ran exactly straight along the path which the caribou took. I simply can't stop thinking how keen was the sense of smell of the 500 lb bear while still running at top speed..Wow
Their smell is way better than their sight. Was told by an experienced hunter that went to BC often... that he accidentally called a grizzly bear thinking that it was a male moose in the woods. He was going fishing, so no gun in sight. He said he waited to see if the bear picked up his scent. He was right across the river from the bear.... waiting as the bear was weaving his head around trying to pick up the scent. As soon as he saw the bear picked up his scent... he bolted for his boat that was not too far from him. He said he was lucky his motor was still hot... cause that bear crossed the river and was chasing him on the shore... He jump on the boat, turned it on, jetted out of there... and all he could see was the bear jump in the water.
This… the bear probably didn’t see the caribou until its second lap in the water. That was pure smell. The reason the bear didn’t turn in the water, instead followed his nose!
The stamina is un real we as humans could not out run that and the sad part is they don't even give you the courtesy of killing you like a lion..they eat you alive and just start bite chunks out..
I was in Alaska once on a hike with a park ranger. Hot got a call on his radio to to pause the hike from another ranger and to reverse back on the trail. A few moments later a grizzly the size of a horse charged across the trial with a fish in his mouth and another equally large bear was right behind chasing him. They were so fast that I didn't have a chance to get a picture and barely understood what had happened. Seeing them up close, how big and fast they were, was memorable. They should always be respected.

The endurance of that grizzly is absolutely incredible. Their sense of smell is about 100X greater than average dogs (and average dogs around 200-300X greater than humans). Think how far that thing ran, then swam, and still had enough in the tank to catch it, kill it and drag it. Wow.

I'm guessing the Caribou instinctively thought being in a body of water is safer than being on dry land and hence it lingered in the river even though it had a head start. You can tell by the way it crossed the river and went right back in. Something it may have done at some point to save it's life against other predators like wolves. This time it proved to be the wrong choice.
@@brycerush98 not if they haven’t dealt with bears before. They don’t instinctively know what to do this is learned behavior. Fight or flight can only get you so far in nature
Apparently, the caribou felt it was unable to ascend the far bank of the river and decided to return to the side it came from instead. The bear chose to get on land anticipating the caribous return to shore. When it realized the caribou reversed direction the bear did not hesitate to resume the pursuit. I think watching this will dispel any doubt about a brown bear's endurance let alone its speed.
The caribou was hurt. The grizzly was using scent to track the caribou, not using sight. That's why the bear retraced the caribou's steps rather than pursuing directly through the water.
@Mewtation Nation MN I saw a video of a bear chasing a herd of bison. Bison are huge, but they can run. The bear was keeping up until he caught up to a smaller one, and killed it. A bear is nearly a ton of pure muscle. The other animal is a juvenile so it's muscles can't hold that much stamina. Just like the dude said this is a chess match. The animal thought the bear wouldn't swim across. It was wrong however it knew once the bear was going one direction it would need to hit the shore in order to change directions. The animal swims back up current the other way but it loses stamina while fighting the current. Unfortunately this chess match was already over in the very beginning when the bear was running all that distance. You have to imagine the bear knew then and knew the whole time it would get the kill. It wouldn't have pursued that initial long run otherwise. Bear knows what it's capable of and so did that animal. Interesting to see this long of a hunt. You'll never see that on the TV. This was a great watch. Cheers to the dudes who took the time to film it.
Prey is hard to come by in the north American tundra, unlike the African Savannah which is teeming with various bovine and antelope species... Scarcity + their time constraints due to hibernation has made the bear a much more motivated and relentless predator.
Bears are insanely smart. Bears are territorial, and know their terrains. This one, I’m sure, knew about the water up ahead; trap for prey, big mistake. Wolves in the water? Caribou can out-swim them. Not the bear. Also, notice the bear came out of the water, ran along the other shore to get a better angle on the caribou and close the gap aggressively. Intelligent creature. It also looks like fall, grizzlies especially can get very vicious that time of year. Again, very intelligent creatures, and as one person commented on here, “a lone caribou, is a dead caribou.” All not a good mix or situation for that caribou.
It amazes me just how far a bear can pick up another animal’s scent trail from so far away. There’s no way from the video that the bear was able to spot that caribou from that far a distance with its own two eyes. I’m also just as equally impressed that it was able to maintain its speed for that length of time despite all its girth.
The main takeaway from this video is that, for all of a grizzly's ferociousness, power, and muscle, is the fact that they have cardio for days. They may look kind of clumsy when they are stumbling along, but they can cover uneven ground like few animals on planet earth. This is why you will never, NEVER, outrun one.
@@GForceIntel Yea but I think the bear had common sense not to be so obvious; it gave the impression it was going straight across the lake, assuming the deer saw it crossing, and followed him staying out of the deer's vision resulting in an awesome kill.
I've never, ever seen anything like that before. I'm in utter amazement that the bear had that much stamina and determination. swimming is what they use against a wolf pack, wolves run better on land but can't swim very well because of shorter legs, the caribou probably learned how to throw off a wolf and assumed bears were the same, but bears are far better than any deer adjacent existence in the water so it essentially was caught by its own assumption of what its normal predators would have done.
The Bear tracked him solely by his scent .He swam past him and ran in his in his scent tracks and entered the water in the same exact spot as he did . That was a educational moment on how bears hunt and track . I’ve never scene this before

The caribou uses water to escape wolves that have tremendous stamina. What works for wolves, doesn't work for bear. The caribou should have kept running. Obviously a big mistake.
This is true, I agree, it probably was using the water strategy that it uses to escape the wolves. Cause wolves will track anything till it drops, but wolves don’t do water this deep,... but bears doooo. Oops.
James Vickers When it comes to endurance, wolves can pretty much go forever. Caribou are next in line. Unless this caribou was sick or injured it could have outlasted the grizzly which has far less endurance than either wolves or caribou. That's why the large ungulates run to water when pursued by wolves. On land the wolves have the advantage, in the water the ungulates have the advantage, or at least a much better chance. They can stand in water a wolf has to swim in. This allows them to move faster in the right depth of water. It in turn allows them to use their defensive weaponry far more effectively. As you know, bears are great in water. Grizzlies have longer legs than wolves, they are incredible swimmers, and even in the water an ungulates defensive weaponry is almost useless against a powerful adult grizzly. So wolf, water, bear, run!
Absolutely amazing footage. This deserves to be on Nat Geo or Discovery channel or something! Rare to witness a grizzly hunt of that Length. I’m curious as to how far away you guys were?
No, all bears avoid humans, but when they feel threatened, or are very hungry, watchout. Now, some dominant males, may not necessarily avoid humans, but not attack unless provoked, or you don't move away, as they may take that as a challenge

Think about top level human athlete runner. Put 20 pounds of fat in them and give them heavy fur coat in warm weather. He wouldn't run far.
@@robwalsh9843 I think that's it. Cats are made for sneaking up silently, striking once and instantly getting a kill. They can sit in the same position for hours, but are not that good in running over longer periods in comparison to other predators.

Exactly! My thought too. Was relying solely on smell which is insane and terrifying at the same time.

I think the caribou was negatively impacted in some way.

I think it was hurt.
The caribou was hurt. The grizzly was using scent to track the caribou, not using sight. That's why the bear retraced the caribou's steps rather than pursuing directly through the water.
I wonder exactly what you are basing that on. The two guys that were filming this never suggested that was the case.
@@ironwolfgaming9632

The main takeaway from this video is that, for all of a grizzly's ferociousness, power, and muscle, is the fact that they have cardio for days. The Caribou thought " How can i use my speed and stamina advantage against this grizzly".. and proceeds to swim back and forth through the river.
swimming is what they use against a wolf pack, wolves run better on land but can't swim very well because of shorter legs, the caribou probably learned how to throw off a wolf and assumed bears were the same, but bears are far better than any deer adjacent existence in the water so it essentially was caught by its own assumption of what its normal predators would have done.

Oops.
How is it gonna keep running when its tired an cant run no more...smh
I have personally witnessed white tailed deer swim some amazing distances even when wounded.
Exactly, was thinking the same thing. Caribou was mistaking carnivores, lol.
Absolutely amazing footage. This deserves to be on Nat Geo or Discovery channel or something! Rare to witness a grizzly hunt of that Length. I’m curious as to how far away you guys were?
Caribou: I’m glad I don’t live in Africa with those nasty predators
Grizzly: hold my beer 🍺
Hold my bear
Most bears are kinda pussy when it comes to humans. It's when you sneak up on them or are near their cubs that things get nasty.
@@RevanBC that only applies to Black Bears.
Brown Bears are aggressive af and will not hesitate to clap you
The ones who loose the fear of humans are the most dangerous, for obvious reasons.
No, all bears avoid humans, but when they feel threatened, or are very hungry, watchout. Now, some dominant males, may not necessarily avoid humans, but not attack unless provoked, or you don't move away, as they may take that as a challenge
Never would expect that bear to make such a long chase! Incredible! If he wasn’t hungry when he started running, he sure was by the time he caught that caribou. Thanks for this post.
It was a young deer, but yeah. :P :)
moral of the story...always assume there's a bear running after you!...even if you can't see it damn well knows where you've been and where you're going 😭
Always hike with slower runners,
Now thats a great video! No dumb music, a steady camera man, not to much talking over the video, and zoomed in after the bear made the kill. Nice work
This is by far the best police chase I've seen in a while. Props to the bird for keeping eyes on the suspect!
🤣😂🤣😂
@Seek Him with all your heart and you will find Him wtf weirdo
This has nothing to do with police you weirdo.
It’s crazy to think that why most people are sat behind desks or playing computer games this type of stuff is going down every single day. Nature is brutal yet so fascinating
I think about this all the time. While I’m sitting here about to go to bed, lions are killing Buffalo and bears are killing bison and wolves are hunting deer. Amazing
A whole nother world
Life is so easy for humans
Lmfaoooo there’s humans being killed by other humans everyday in your neighborhoods but y’all are amazed by this.
I cannot believe that you've got such an amazing footage I have never seen anything so amazing you deserve an award for catching this I cannot believe how far the bear ran to catch it, just makes you think how amazing wildlife is and after all these millions of years that's how good the instinct has become
Dude… punctuation…
Astonishing. Thank you for sharing. This real-time action is what we never see on the documentaries, only the edited highlights.
I've NEVER seen anything like this!! I thought that bear only had speed in short bursts, but someone forgot to tell this one that. She reminded me more of a wolf than a grizz. And what incredible strength, to carry that much weight out of the water, dispatching it, then eating it. RESPECT.
Nah a grizzly bear can run up to 40 mph for awhile
@@ja1058
I sure don't want to find out!
Bears have good endurance but it also depends on how fatty they are and also on the climate. They depend on the fat to get through winter. They have thick heavy fur to keep warm. Think about top level human athlete runner. Put 20 pounds of fat in them and give them heavy fur coat in warm weather. He wouldn't run far.
@@burgundilainenkeikari6908 And neither would a bear if you shaved his chest and tied his front paws together
Bears can run fast for great distances.
The bear has stamina carrying all that weight with no problemo because he doesn’t smoke with cigarettes 🤪
Or drink and do drugs lol that bear is truly a role model!
lmao smoke wit cigarettes
He really loves his chicken!
Lmao. Truth
@@Techno_Avatar haha thats fucking crazy half way threw this I was proper indecisive weather to go score or not !
I’m amazed at the bear’s stamina
Running, swimming and wrestling
Especially for such a large animal. I think bears have better stamina than large cats like lions or tigers.
That’s the animal kingdom Ironman competition.
@@robwalsh9843 I think that's it. Cats are made for sneaking up silently, striking once and instantly getting a kill. They can sit in the same position for hours, but are not that good in running over longer periods in comparison to other predators.
@@robwalsh9843
I agree
@@nilon5327
Good points
You know when you read Lewis and Clark's diary it seems like every other entry they are describing a bear encounter. It makes you realize that America was once home to a huge number of bears, and they were the masters of the landscape.
I ALWAYS,.....ALWAYS forget not just how fast and how far a bear can run; but also how beautifully they run. That
bear runs as majestically as any big cat.
@@dme1016 Firstly, nobody asked for your lecture. Secondly, only a moron would bring any political statement to a video about Bears.

Bears are some bad mofos
Especially the Chicago Bears!
@@omarescamilla6223 so are the care bears !
I’ve shared bear county and have had encounters but never fired a shot. I’ve seen horrible wounds caused a native by an attack. I help search for a man lost in Bear country not be be found. This video is beyond what measure of endurance I would have believed. Locked in on a single, primordial purpose. My huge respect grows!
Shoot that care bear o
Ok
Engrish
Da fuck are you talking about
Holy shit, I’m guessing it could only track the caribou that far by scent… really puts things into perspective. I backpack every now and then and tbh their ability to smell and track food that well is scary lol
This is the most amazing pursuit of one animal by another I have ever seen. I almost can’t even believe it’s possible.
@poopy pants Cried when you saw it huh? Seen too many Disney movies to find this amazing. They should’ve just talked it out.
Feel sorry for the caribou but that beast was incredible
2:37 the bear doesn't turn immediately because it knows running on land is faster than running in water.
Not that it’s faster, but that he’ll expend less energy
@@teufelhunden8308 true
Exactly. And less energy. It's both
Yes great observation, also the bear knew in the water it could out swim the Caribou. Bears are adapted to swim.See how it closed the distance in the water quite quickly.
Which begs the question, why did the caribou go back into the water knowing the bear was still on chase and much closer,
U ever chased someone? Ran when they ran , walked when they walked. To conserve energy. The bear never walked. It just kept coming. Truly a prays nightmare. Stamina is absolutely mind blowing. Great video
Prey*
I chased somebody once. My Neck met a clothesline and from there all I saw was sky.
Why couldn't the caribou run away on land, because even the wolves can't catch them?
@@Balta454 probably was injured
@@Balta454 bear is just as fast on land and faster in the water ...bear stamina is of the charts ck it out....
From all the documentation I’ve seen over the years, Bear attacks are absolutely terrifying. They can attack at random, they hunt you down, and they will eat you alive. The Grizzly Man died a horrible death with his GF. Lions and tigers will attack the jugular vain to kill you, where as a bear will just eat you anywhere from what I understand. And they don’t give up.
the Grizzly Man was an IDIOT. He did everything to get himself killed. I'm in black bear country including in side our town in the Columbia valley (of the mighty Columbia). another 1,000 feet up at our ranch are three enormous grizzly siblings. we have zero problem with them, except they love to eat.......our irrigated hay. yes, black bears will kill you; I don't go up any mountain without bear spray. Grizzly will kill you if you stumble on their kill (an alberta sheep hunter did just that) but that's rare.
The fact his 20/20 eyesight was off the chart - That he worked out from That distance he was in with a chance .
And then that he chased then swam , chased then swam like some kind of Sumo triathlete .
Dang that bear deserved every morsel .
Bravo Mr Bear 🐻 🦌 👏
and thankyou for capturing this incredible feat of endurance ❤
the caribou agreed.
I don't think it was his eyesight it was his nose picking up the scent. He was tracking it with his nose.
You clearly missed the point! Look how he didn't chose the shorter route to kill him but went off by scent alone.
I bet that bear still had enough stamina to chase both of you down, even if you went separate directions
After seeing this I wouldn't doubt it in all honesty. This bears gas tank is ridiculous, the thing just ran/swam as hard as it could for 5 minutes straight and still had enough juice to easily drag a caribou to shore. Its ungodly
Lmao
Lol
@@joegarrison5911 I've seen a video on reddit where a grizzly has a bull elk in his jaws and is jogging up the side of a mountain with it. That's a 700 pound piece of meat being dragged like a cat does it's kittens.
yes, can it catch a bullet with its teeth too?
Thanks for the fact that you didn't add any annoying background music; that kind of music usually ruins or at least undercuts how good the video was in terms of content.
The energy , the eyesight , the nose factor , the intelligence to understand a distressed alone easy picking...once your there. It's all just crazy unbelievable nature at its best. Lewis and Clark and the team feared the grizzly more than any other animal and probably father winter and raging rivers.
Incredibly smart Mr Grizzly came out of the water because running on land offers no resistance compared to swimming it's all about angles and he was using his geometry skills...
My thoughts exactly
Simply stunning footage. There can't be many people that have witnessed something like that let alone film it 👍👍👍
Damn, I never would of thought a huge bear like that would have so much endurance. That is just amazing. And yes, no music, just the wind. Thank you SOO much for that.
I agree with everyone’s comments on speed, intelligence and smell. Unbelievable. Even more impressive to me….after the run and swim, the freaking strength to drag a several hundred pound animal out of the water and across land like a rag doll. Holy sh#t. This was incredible strength.
The bear was smart continuing to go for the shore after the caribou entered the water again. It assured that the caribou would have to stay in the water and not have a chance to get away... he knew exactly what he was doing.
Great video!
The bear cut off the retreat and forced the caribou to swim. Caribou was toast as soon as it reentered the water.
It was toast when it was born, the bear had already caught his scent
Thank You for no annoying music!
Indeed, there is no man-made music in the wilds.
And I would not have guessed the grizzly would have half that much endurance.
The caribou became exhausted while in the first leg of crossing the water.
ThanX for showing!
