These videos are a great supplement to my weekly violin lessons. They always seem so short and every week I come and watch your videos for added guidance. I love them. Thanks so much! This one was great-helpful because I'm in Suzuki 1 working on this very topic and this video helped visually for me. I'm 36 and picked up the violin after playing the flute my whole life and I love it. :)
Its a tricky one, but if you know its coming, you need to aim your finger so that a small portion of it is already on the next string you have to play and then when the time comes, you just need to 'roll' that finger over. Dont lift the finger up or you will catch an open string in the middle. Does that help at all? Alison
Very helpful. Figuring this out is difficult. Glad you mentioned it would be 10% louder closer to the bridge. That gives me a starting point. I can't tell what is FF or F while playing.
u need to check the String action- height of strings from fingerboard. If its too high u cant play it as beginner and it needs work to reduce the bridge and nut by Luthier. Check also whther the fingerboard is Ebony black wood or its painted. These things are most basic things.
i have a full size, but it depends on you as to what size you get. I cant advise you on that one as i cant see you. If you are an adult you would need a full size (4/4) violin though i would suspect.
Im sorry i have no idea as I dont know what it is and I probably havnt played it either to be able to tell you even if you told me the name as there are 1000's of brands of violin out there. Sorry.
In some songs i am practicing, there are instances, example a G note followed by a D note. The score shows i am supposed to press them with my third finger. I would like to ask how you go about shifting from the A string to the D string. I was told to catch the note from the side of my finger, but i dont know exactly how to do so when i place my finger on the A string, i will lift up my finger to play on the D string. I got a feeling it is bad technique. Please enlighten me :)
I was looking at this because I was curious about how bowed string instruments change dynamics, these kinds of videos remind me of what's possible to play. Is there a general consensus on what mezzopiano and mezzoforte sound like in comparison to piano and forte?
I don’t understand why my violin especially the G string in the higher positions eg 7th sounds very muffled and rasped? Is this normal for all violins ? Is it my technic?
Could be a number of things. Your strings, your violin cant cope with higher positions, your bridge is out, your soundpost is out. I would take the violin to a luthier first as there might be something up with your violin, but if you are tackling advanced stuff like playing that high on the G, then I assume you have a violin worth several thousand dollars and therefore it might be your technique or poor strings that need to be extra high tension perhaps.
The Online Piano & Violin Tutor It is a new violin I got and I paid $2500. They replied back to me and said I need to play more near the bridge to open up the sound.. don’t know if this is true or not.

Thanks for the info. I started taking lessons just over a year ago, and every little bit helps.
More hairs, nearer to the bridge to play louder.
Less hairs, closer to the ebony to play softer.
Very helpful tips! 👍
Wonderful ! In one video, you have offered so many golden tips !
Thank you.

Yes, very helpful Alison! Thank you so much
At about 5:20 and before, you sometimes get an A one octave higher than the open string. Why does that harmonic show up and how to eliminate it?

Really good, but it would of helped if you used the technical terms, forte and piano for older viewers.
SBEO LILUTLEY GORGEOUS

So I have to add more pressure when I play forte but I don't need to add pressure when I play piano
Thank you so much! I think i got what you meant :)
